Walking The Skyway
The Skyway bridge was built in 1958 to improve the QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way) highway while facilitating ship and boat traffic through the canal under it. It stands as a local landmark between Hamilton and Burlington Ont. and can be a nice relaxing walking route.
While walking the sidewalk and trail beside the Skyway, you will reach the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge. Built in 1962 this lift bridge is actually the fifth bridge that has stood at this location and originally had train tracks on it. These were removed in the 1980s to create more traffic lanes and a sidewalk.
Right beside the lift bridge is the the old canal lighthouse, built in 1858 to replace the wooden lighthouse that burnt down before it. The original lighthouse keepers house is also there, but has sat abandoned since the 1960s. There have been efforts to restore both, but as you can tell. There has been very little success.
It is a great spot for quiet night walks and photos! Especially black and white shots done for the #monomad challenge!
The lights look great captured in black and white, like little twinkling fairies 🥰
