Searching For Ice

With a solid couple of weeks of frigid temperatures, I knew exactly where I wanted to go see ice formations! Lower Chedoke falls is a 20 foot tall waterfall located off the Chedoke trail is west Hamilton Ont.

It is far from being the largest or most picturesque waterfall in the area, but 12 years ago I saw the most incredible ice formations at it. They looked like large turquoise sea shells at the base of the waterfall. I have traveled back every winter in hopes of seeing this again, but we haven't had a cold enough winter to produce them.

So I ventured into the gorge with high hopes of finally seeing them again!

The incredible ice formations of the clay and rock walls, raised my hopes even higher!

I reached the falls and despite some incredible ice, the formations and shapes I was looking for had only started and were small.

Tiny ones along the waterflow.

And a little bit larger ones beside the waterfall.

They are starting and I truly hope this cold snap continues long enough for them to get nice and big! Thankfully the rest of the ice and landscape is a frozen wonderland!

For the hike out, I put up the drone to get some more angles of the waterfall/gorge.

Those sea shell formations still elude me, but this winter is far from over and I will return to check again!
