Exploring A Huge Underground Room

A friend of mine sent me one picture of this location and told me I needed to go asap. It was open but wouldn't be for long! Within hours I was in a storm drain tunnel and then inside of this massive CSO storage tank.

How huge is it? 41 meters long, 37 meters wide and 10 meters tall, with the ability to hold 15,000 cubic meters or 15 million liters of water. The city estimates that over 4100 homes in the area would flood multiple times a year.

It also serves as a sewer overflow pumping station, with a tunnel leading to a small pool in the corner of the room. With three large pipes running down the wall into the pool. Thankfully this area was small and mostly empty lol

The room is quite incredible and it would have been nice just to use the staircase to get out, but that wasn't an option.

The only way out was the same way that I went in. A sturdy but filthy ladder up to what looks like a viewing platform, but is actually where the water flows to the storm drains when the tank is full of water.

It was such a cool explore! It is the first time I have seen an underground room of this size and despite of how it looks. It is not very old. It was built in 2007 (below is a photo of its construction). I always love seeing the hidden infrastructure that makes our cities possible!

But will they fill it with water again? 🤔

Interesting construction. 👌

Yes it is for water overflow if there is a big storm, so it will fill again more than once

We thought the same thing! But there is such a heavy mist that it is very difficult. We will be trying in the future
