🇬🇧 This Wednesday, I’m taking you for a walk around the Roman site of Baelo Claudia, located near Bolonia on the Atlantic coast of Andalusia. As is well known, the Romans knew how to choose their settlements, and Baelo Claudia is no exception. Nestled between the ocean and the wild hills of the Natural Park of the Strait of Gibraltar, this archaeological site offers a very rich experience in a magnificent setting. Here, the past reveals itself in an almost untouched environment, lulled by the wind, the light and the sound of the waves softened by the shape of the coastline. What strikes you first is the exceptional environment. The site opens directly onto a long stretch of golden sand facing the Atlantic, with the dunes of Bolonia and green hills as a backdrop. The contrast between the ancient stones and the surrounding nature is striking.

🇫🇷 Ce mercredi, je vous amène en promenade sur le site romain de Baelo Claudia, situé près de Bolonia, sur la côte atlantique de l’Andalousie. Comme on le sait bien, les Romains savaient choisir leurs lieux d’implantation, et Baelo Claudia ne fait pas exception. Niché entre l’océan et les reliefs sauvages du parc naturel du détroit de Gibraltar, ce site archéologique offre une expérience très riche dans un cadre magnifique. Ici, le passé se découvre dans un environnement presque intact, bercé par le vent, la lumière et le bruit des vagues atténuées par le dessin de la côte. Ce qui frappe avant tout, c’est l’environnement exceptionnel. Le site s’ouvre directement sur une longue plage de sable blond, face à l’Atlantique, avec pour toile de fond les dunes de Bolonia et les reliefs verdoyants. Le contraste entre les pierres antiques et la nature environnante est saisissant.

🇪🇸 Este miércoles os llevo a pasear por el yacimiento romano de Baelo Claudia, situado cerca de Bolonia, en la costa atlántica de Andalucía. Como es bien sabido, los romanos sabían elegir muy bien sus asentamientos, y Baelo Claudia no es una excepción. Enclavado entre el océano y los relieves salvajes del Parque Natural del Estrecho de Gibraltar, este sitio arqueológico ofrece una experiencia muy rica en un entorno magnífico. Aquí, el pasado se descubre en un ambiente casi intacto, mecido por el viento, la luz y el sonido de las olas suavizado por la forma de la costa. Lo que más impresiona es su entorno excepcional. El yacimiento se abre directamente a una larga playa de arena dorada frente al Atlántico, con las dunas de Bolonia y las colinas verdes como telón de fondo. El contraste entre las piedras antiguas y la naturaleza que las rodea es impactante.

🇬🇧 Founded in the 2nd century BC, Baelo Claudia owed its development to its strategic position near the Strait of Gibraltar. The city maintained close trade links with North Africa, visible on the horizon on clear days. It was particularly famous for the production of garum, a fish sauce highly prized throughout the Roman Empire. The remains of the salting workshops, perfectly preserved, still bear witness today to this essential economic activity, closely linked to the nearby sea. The site follows a classic Roman urban layout, with its forum at the heart of the city, surrounded by temples, administrative buildings and shops. As you walk through the ruins, you can clearly make out columns, statue bases and pavements that structured daily life. The baths, paved streets and the theatre, leaning against a gentle natural slope, complete this remarkably legible ensemble, offering a clear picture of a medium sized Roman city.

🇫🇷 Fondée au IIᵉ siècle avant notre ère, Baelo Claudia doit son développement à sa position stratégique proche du détroit de Gibraltar. La ville entretenait des liens commerciaux étroits avec l’Afrique du Nord, visible à l’horizon par temps clair. Elle était particulièrement réputée pour la production du garum, cette sauce de poisson très prisée dans tout l’Empire romain. Les vestiges des ateliers de salaison, parfaitement conservés, témoignent encore aujourd’hui de cette activité économique essentielle, intimement liée à la mer toute proche. Le site s’organise selon un plan urbain romain classique, avec son forum, véritable cœur de la cité, entouré de temples, de bâtiments administratifs et de boutiques. En parcourant les ruines, on distingue nettement les colonnes, les bases des statues et les pavements qui structuraient la vie quotidienne des habitants. Les thermes, les rues pavées et le théâtre, adossé à une légère pente naturelle, complètent cet ensemble remarquablement lisible, donnant une idée précise de l’organisation d’une ville romaine de taille moyenne.

🇪🇸 Fundada en el siglo II antes de nuestra era, Baelo Claudia debe su desarrollo a su posición estratégica cerca del Estrecho de Gibraltar. La ciudad mantenía estrechos vínculos comerciales con el norte de África, visible en el horizonte en días despejados. Era especialmente conocida por la producción de garum, una salsa de pescado muy apreciada en todo el Imperio romano. Los restos de las fábricas de salazón, perfectamente conservados, dan testimonio aún hoy de esta actividad económica esencial, íntimamente ligada al mar cercano. El sitio sigue un trazado urbano romano clásico, con su foro como verdadero corazón de la ciudad, rodeado de templos, edificios administrativos y tiendas. Al recorrer las ruinas, se distinguen claramente las columnas, las bases de estatuas y los pavimentos que estructuraban la vida cotidiana de sus habitantes. Las termas, las calles empedradas y el teatro, apoyado en una suave pendiente natural, completan este conjunto notablemente legible, ofreciendo una imagen precisa de la organización de una ciudad romana de tamaño medio.

🇬🇧 The ever present wind, changing light and Mediterranean vegetation give the place a timeless atmosphere, far from any urban bustle. The relative isolation of the site reinforces this feeling even more. Baelo Claudia can be visited in a rare calm, ideal for contemplation. Strangely enough, I have never seen many tourists there, even though entry is free with a simple ID. You can wander for a long time, imagine ships entering the harbour now vanished, and the inhabitants going about their daily lives between trade, worship and leisure. Earthquakes and the tsunamis that followed contributed to the gradual abandonment of the city, reminding us of the fragility of human settlements in the face of natural forces.

🇫🇷 Le vent omniprésent, les lumières changeantes et la végétation méditerranéenne donnent au lieu une atmosphère intemporelle, loin de toute agitation urbaine. L’isolement relatif du site renforce encore cette impression. Baelo Claudia se visite dans un calme rare, propice à la contemplation. Étrangement, je n’y ai jamais vu beaucoup de touristes, alors que l’entrée est gratuite sur simple présentation d’une pièce d’identité. On peut s’y promener longuement, imaginer les bateaux entrant dans le port aujourd’hui disparu, les habitants vaquant à leurs occupations quotidiennes entre commerce, culte et loisirs. Les tremblements de terre et les tsunamis qui ont suivi ont contribué à l’abandon progressif de la ville. Cela rappelle la fragilité de ces implantations humaines face aux forces naturelles.

🇪🇸 El viento omnipresente, las luces cambiantes y la vegetación mediterránea otorgan al lugar una atmósfera atemporal, lejos de cualquier bullicio urbano. El relativo aislamiento del sitio refuerza aún más esta sensación. Baelo Claudia se visita en una calma poco común, propicia para la contemplación. Curiosamente, nunca he visto muchos turistas allí, a pesar de que la entrada es gratuita con solo presentar un documento de identidad. Se puede pasear durante largo tiempo, imaginar los barcos entrando en el puerto hoy desaparecido y a los habitantes ocupados en su vida cotidiana entre comercio, culto y ocio. Los terremotos y los tsunamis que siguieron contribuyeron al abandono progresivo de la ciudad, recordándonos la fragilidad de estos asentamientos humanos frente a las fuerzas de la naturaleza.

🇬🇧 The close link between the city and its environment is omnipresent. The sea provided resources, the winds facilitated navigation, and the surrounding hills offered natural protection. Even today, this dialogue between nature and history can be felt at every step. The ruins seem to belong to the landscape, as if they had always been there, carefully maintained so as not to be reclaimed by sand and vegetation. Visiting Baelo Claudia is therefore much more than a simple archaeological discovery. Along the beach, many travellers end up staying longer than expected, sleeping among the dunes, fishing, meditating and enjoying the slow passage of time. If you have the chance or the desire to visit Bolonia, be aware that there is a lot to see and do in the surrounding area, such as Tarifa or Gibraltar, among others.

La mer fournissait les ressources, les vents facilitaient la navigation et les collines environnantes offraient une protection naturelle. Aujourd’hui encore, ce dialogue entre nature et histoire est perceptible à chaque pas. Les ruines semblent faire partie du paysage, comme si elles avaient toujours été là, soigneusement entretenues pour ne pas être reprises par le sable et la végétation. Visiter Baelo Claudia, c’est ainsi bien plus qu’une simple découverte archéologique. En longeant la plage, de nombreux voyageurs s’arrêtent plus longtemps que prévu, dormant dans les dunes, pêchant, méditant et profitant du temps qui passe lentement. Si vous avez l’occasion ou l’envie de visiter Bolonia, sachez qu’il y a beaucoup de choses à voir et à faire dans la région proche, comme Tarifa ou Gibraltar, entre autres.

El mar proporcionaba los recursos, los vientos facilitaban la navegación y las colinas circundantes ofrecían una protección natural. Incluso hoy, este diálogo entre naturaleza e historia se percibe a cada paso. Las ruinas parecen formar parte del paisaje, como si siempre hubieran estado allí, cuidadosamente mantenidas para no ser recuperadas por la arena y la vegetación. Visitar Baelo Claudia es, por tanto, mucho más que un simple descubrimiento arqueológico. A lo largo de la playa, muchos viajeros se quedan más tiempo del que pensaban, durmiendo entre las dunas, pescando, meditando y disfrutando del lento paso del tiempo.
