a few of the historic buildings in Downtown New Bedford MA
This post if for Wednesday walk challenge
Any questions about the challenge read the guide at the Bottom of the post ;)
This week I will share a few photos from a recent walk around the historic district here in New Bedford
Starting with the Seamen's Bethel and Mariners home which was built in 1832 at 15 Johnny Cake Hill.
It is a historic non-denominational chapel managed by the New Bedford Port Society. It serves as a spiritual haven and memorial for whalers and fishermen.
I read Moby Dick as a teenager, where the bethel and was famously immortalized as the "Whaleman's Chapel" in Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, at the timeI never would have imagines one day I would see it

Next up we have the star store.
Originally opened by the New Bedford Dry Goods Companyearlier, but was rebuilt in 1915 as a grand, four-floor retail epicenter with elevators and a roof garden, employing hundreds in its prime. It eventually closed in the mid-1980s due to changing retail trends and the North Dartmouth Mall.
The City acquired the building in 1995, transforming it into the downtown campus for UMass Dartmouth's College of Visual and Performing Arts, but due to lack of funding it closed in 2023
In 2023 Following vacancy, back-tax negotiations, and advocacy from displaced students and groups like DATMA, the building was sold for $1 to the Arts & Business Council. Renovations are actively underway to reopen the space, and pop-up fine art exhibits and lighted wire stars in its massive windows have already begun signaling its return as the "living room downtown" for local creators

The New Bedford Institute for savings, built in 1853 during the height of the global whaling industry. Designed by noted architect Russell Warren, it reflected New Bedford’s status as one of the richest cities in the United States at the time

and to finish off the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center (affectionately known as "The Z") in Downtown New Bedford is a newly renovated, 100-year-old cultural landmark that serves as the anchor for the region's arts and entertainment.Following an extensive 18-month, $37 million historic restoration, the venue officially reopened its doors to the public on January 17, 2026

Wednesday Walk is a challenge started by me, the idea is to get out for a short walk and get some shots of what you can see within a short distance of your home office or wherever you start. And this is my entry for this week, but first, let me explain the challenge.
This is my post for the Wednesday Walk challenge hosted by myself, let me first explain the guidelines
Try and get out once a week for a short walk, can be from your office, home or anywhere really and walk for a few blocks or a few minutes looking for things to get shots of.
Your walk does not have to be on a Wednesday I just ask if possible to share your walk photos on a Wednesday.
Try and get a few shots not just one
Add a bit of a write up about where you walked
Just one Wednesday Walk tagged post a week
You can look for anything in general or decide on one subject you want to get shots off.
Make a point of looking around and up and see what you can find to get shots of that otherwise you may miss
Do a post with the shots you get on a Wednesday and tag it with #wednesdaywalk, also if you happen to join, please leave a link to your post in a comment on this post and I will try and visit them all, especially if its not one of the first 5 tags or I may miss seeing it .
Following me and re-Hiving the post so more see it would be appreciated but isn't a rule just a suggestion.
I am not strict on these rules and hence why they are called guidelines and not rules
I will try and visit, and upvote all who take part in the Wednesday Walk.
I hope a few of you may find this an interesting challenge and decide to join in.
unless stated otherwise all photos used in my posts are taken and owned by myself, if you wish to use any of my images please contact me.

Good day, Mr. @tattoodjay
I love period buildings, and when you show us photos of what's inside, I'm always impressed.
Your photos are truly beautiful.
Have a great day.
thanks I find them so interesting ;)
The guys middle name was really "cake"? That's funny. It's too bad that retail space hasn't been able to get some staying power. It looks like a cool old building.
actually thats something i learned recently, it seems quite a few places have streets witht he same name, and its not named after a person
The street was renamed Johnny Cake Hill shortly after the whaling museum was built. The name “Johnny Cake” honors a regional fare of cornmeal pancakes
Oh yes, I get it now. I must have been having some brain fog there! I have heard of Johnny Cakes before.
👍🙂👍 well it was new to me :)
Everything is so clean and tidy among you bourgeois that there is nowhere to spit.
That's what a drunken proletarian said in an old Soviet movie
Of course, this is a joke and an allegory, but there is a lot of truth in it. I can sometimes compare Russian and foreign settlements.
yes that saying can relate to many places I have been to as well, I kind of prefer more down and dirty areas
Welcome to our country. 😂
But at the moment it is completely impossible. 😒
Sorry to hear that
My daughter's friends have been waiting for a visa to the United States for six months. It seems they're going to come live with you. More precisely, to California.
Wishing them good luck with getting the Vias, California is a beautiful state
How are you, my dear friend @tattoodjay?

I love those old buildings, just imagine all that history behind them. Funny how life turns out, when you read Moby Dick you never thought you would see his home. Now it's right next to where you live. Ironic!
Great shots today, that's what I love about the east coast, all those historic buildings...

Have a great day
An extraordinary historic building with beautiful architecture. Although the building's fiction has changed, there are still ornaments that can be read as an old building. Thank you @tattoodjay. Greetings.
