Today I will share a few shots of the Old Fort in what I call Fort Taber Park here in New Bedford,
Some call the park for Rodman, and although on Maps and google searches the Fort itself is called Fort Rodman, some locals say it is Fort Taber
From what I have read online is is also known as the Old Stone Fort, Fort Rodman (known as "Fort at Clark's Point" until 1898) began construction in 1857 under the third system of US fortifications, and in 1862 construction became overseen by Henry Robert, author of Robert's Rules of Order and an Army Corps of Engineers officer. The fort, as built, had emplacements for 72 cannon in three tiers, a fourth tier was originally planned, but this was removed from the design to allow more timely completion. Construction was halted in 1871, and the fort as planned was never completed.
The fort is closed off and not safe and hence never opened to the public, I would love to see it restored but I have not heard of any plans to do that, and with the talks of budget cuts in the city this coming year any hope of that is gettign less likely and as each year goes by I would imagine its decaying more and hence would be more expensive to repair
I had taken some sunrise shots on the beach, and then took a walk around the fort, the glow from the sun as it rose over the horizon

Nice shots! Do you know if the stuff growing on the top was planted or did it just kind of spring up naturally? Do they tend to it at all? It looks a little unkempt in these photos.
I think its nature claiming it back, as I dont think they do anything to look after it sadly

I don't see a point in restoring the fort merely as a historical landmark, but perhaps the structure could be put to a new use? Even as a National Guard armory or the like thanks to its military heritage?

There is a sacred covenant between the creator and the soil upon which they build. I am sure many would agree with you on that, I on the other hand like to see historic sites like this preserved and maintained
I'm not convinced a building is historic just because it is old, even if it can be tied to a famous name. Preservation and maintenance cost money. People want a return on that money, especially if it is taken from them without any real consent. But I also dislike arbitrary demolition. Thus the suggestion for putting it to use.
