Sublime and Beautiful Sunday at the Zoo

Sublime and Beautiful Sunday

This post is for #SublimeSunday is inspired by @c0ff33a and #BeautifulSunday is initiated by @ace108.

Today, I will share a few shots from a visit to Buttonwood Park Zoo here in New Bedford
The Buttonwood Park Zoo, located in New Bedford, Massachusetts, is a zoo located in the center of Buttonwood Park. It was opened in 1894, it is the third-oldest zoo in New England and the 12th-oldest zoo in the United States. it covers about 7 acres (2.8 ha) so isnt that big but is still a charming zoo, the zoo is owned and operated by the City of New Bedford, with the support of the Buttonwood Park Zoological Society. It is located on part of the Buttonwood Park Historic District, and federally designated on the National Register of Historic Places.

The zoo is home to more 250 different animals made up of more than 80 different species of animals, including many that are rare and endangered.
On my visits there I have spoken to a few of the staff and I got the impression they truly care for and look after all the animals so even though it is small and I wish the animals had more space I am glad they are well cared for

I was thinking of the zoo as its still pretty cool in the early mornings but we are having some warmer days ahead, first day I have nothing on and the temp is 45 or better I plan to visit the zoo one afternoon for my firts photo walk of the year

You may wonder why 45F, well a couple of years ago I was heading out when it was cooler and I would feel it in my chest for a few days afterwards and my wife bles her would get worried about me, so I promised I would only go out for walks when the temp is above 45, and that seems to have worked for me so I am sticking to ,my promise

I am starting with a shot of Emily, the Asian elephant at Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford, turned 61 years old in September 2025. As a geriatric elephant, she has resided at the zoo for over 55 years, and recently became the sole elephant there following the death of her companion, Ruth, in December 2024.

I wish I could sit and chill for long periods like this deer does, or perhaps I should say my wife wishes I could, wherever we may be say out sitting on a beach or in a park or even sitting at home watching TV, I cant sit still for long and get up and wonder off, perhps every 15 minutes sometimes, and I am sure it drives her nuts

and one of the bears, there harder to get shots of the last time I visited there as they have put some dots on the window to their enclosure

thats why its a bit blurry above the bears head

While I don't like seeing animals without freedom, I'm glad you were able to enjoy them like this, so well cared for and beautiful. Congratulations on the experience!

Wow, it's really fun this Sunday that you took the time to visit this zoo, and some of them are very beautiful and the most eye-catching is the horse that has very long hair.

How are you, dear friend @tattoodjay?

How wonderful that you have the opportunity to see more than 80 species of animals there; it's undoubtedly an important zoo. 250 animals is no small feat; a lot of work must be done to keep them well cared for.

Excellent photos, I appreciate you sharing them with us.

Have a wonderful Sunday!

Good day, Mr. @tattoodjay

You have a beautiful zoo to visit and enjoy the presence of so many animals.

How sad to hear that Emily lost her companion; she's a beautiful elephant.

I also really like the deer; it looks so peaceful sitting there.

What beautiful photographs.

It has been years since i have been to the zoo here. Only visited the last couple times because the kids would love it. Sure is nice to visit from the comfort of my curation chair with you!

Because it is a challenge to be out for long periods of time, maybe it makes you appreciate it a little more when you can get out and take it all in.

Bear necessities! ;)

Those were some great pictures from the zoo, animals are always so much fun to see up close. Usually you can't get that close to a bear safely! lol

Glad it will be warm enough for afternoon walks again soon, it will be nice to get in your first walk of the year there. With your lungs you want those temps above 45 though, that's for sure!

I don't like sitting long on benches either, I can see why your wife wants to sit and enjoy the scenery. But that desire to keep moving is one I understand well! lol

I hope things are going well and that snow is melting away. May spring come soon to your neck of the woods!
