Neds Point Light

Neds Point Light

posting a little earlier than usual this morning as I am about to head off to the surgical center to have the catheter that was accidently left inside my arm removed, should be a quick and easy little surgery

Good Morning
Today I will share a few shots from a visit to Neds Point in Mattapoisett MA about a 25 minute drive from where I live

Today I will focus mainly on the lighthouse itself

a little bit about the lighthouse
Ned Point Light as it is official called I believe is a historic lighthouse on Ned's Point Road in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts.
The lighthouse was built in 1838 at a cost of approximately $5,000, and named after Ned Dexter, a local farmer. Supervised by a local builder, Leonard Hammond, the lighthouse was constructed with a birdcage-style lantern similar to Bird Island Light found in Marion, Massachusetts.

All the stone used for the construction of the lighthouse was locally sourced, with most of it originating from nearby beaches.

Inside, Which I didn't get to see, are 32 granite steps that are cantilevered to the outside wall without the use of mortar. The original lantern used 11 whale oil lamps, each with its own parabolic reflector. And like other lighthouses I have read up on around here the Whale oil no doubt came from the New Bedford Whaling ships.

The Great Blizzard of 1888 significantly damaged the keeper's stone house, resulting in it being demolished and the building of a wooden replacement.

Following modernization in 1961, the lighthouse was reactivated in 1961 with its current 6-second isophase.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

I always enjoy visit there, especially on days where I am lucky enough to catch a nice sunrise
apart from taking photos of the lighthouse and area, I generally walk loops around the green area there to get my steps in

and speaking of the green area here I am standing on it for this next shot

its a popular spot for people to enjoy the sunrise so can see a couple of cars parked there enjoying it, most sit in their cars unlike me walking around like a mad man

Well they got it out, but now there saying it was a clot and not a catheter which I find a bit strange from what I understand an Ultrasound done by a specialist can tell the difference, so either they got it wrong with the scan and it was a clot or the hospital is covering its you know what

What a cool lighthouse! 32 granite steps all carved out and place without any mortar, talk about craftsmanship! I love those old lighthouses, just so much history inside those towers.

I hope the surgery goes well, it sounds pretty simple. I hope it all went well, and you're back at home resting. How's the puree diet threating you?
