Monochrome Monday around the city of New Bedford MA
Monochrome Monday around the city of New Bedford MA
Good Morning, I hope you weekend went well.
Today as I tend to do on MOndays I am sharing a few Monochrome images, these all from recent walks around the city of New Bedford.
Starting with the Whalesman Statue, New Bedford was a huge Whaling port back in the day and hence there is a lot related to whaling in its history and monuments and statues.
It was created by artist Bela Lyon Pratt and installed in 1913.
The sculpture represents the city's rich whaling history and was a gift to the city from William W. Crapo. it has an inscription that reads "A dead whale or a stove boat" which is engraved on the statue's base, reflecting a common whaler's mantra
Recently, it was refurbished back to its glory and to repair corrosion and a broken harpoon tip.
I have been told the original design for the Statue was based on a Cape Verde Whaler, but they had the sculpture change the head to a more European style, I Guess back then people were style being politically correct or incorrect

Next up I choose to capture some of the detail of the Barnard Monument in Buttonwood Park.
not sure I had ever noticed these words on it, well i had probably noticed them, but not got close to read them
it states a gift of New Bedford native George D. Barnard, so thats how the barnard Monument gets its name, it was it was was dedicated on September 19, 1914

This is the Crystal Ice building near the port, I have driven by and it catches my eye often, but not sure I had taken the time to get some shots of it till the other day, hhe building is historically significant, as the company has operated since at least 1927.
it is one of the largest producers of ice in North America. the New Bedford facility can manufacture in excess of 500 ton of block and fragmented ice daily

Now this building which I have shared a color shot of before, has an interesting history, Hetty Green known as the Witch of Wall Street, grew up here, at one stage she was the richest woman in the world, and after that Nuns who taught at a local school lived there and at another time it was an orphange and used by The department for Children and familes (DCF)

While I love the morning views of alll your posts, I particularly enjoy the little snippets of history you uncover and share. I think we should do more of that where each of us are because there are interesting stories beneath the surface and it ties us more to our communities.
Ice ice baby.
OHh yes absolutely, I am enjoying learning the history of the city through the old buildings, infact this morning I skipped my sunrise walk as my back was playing up, but now its feeling a bit better, so I may head out once its a bit more light and before the heat of the day and visit a few places I have book marke din maps to cvheck out

Cape Verde goal by Sidny Lopes Cabral was the best goal so far of the World Cup I think. I suppose it makes sense they would have ran whale ships out from Cape Verde. That goal may be a sculpture somewhere, someday 🙂
Could even be here there is a big Cape Verde community here

This Monochrome Monday in New Bedford is awesome! The photos make me feel like I'm taking a leisurely stroll through a historic old town full of stories, but in a dramatic black and white version. This city seems to have a mysterious vibe that makes me want to explore even further.
