A little about the Z as some call it

The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center entertains, educates, and inspires our community by presenting an array of high-quality performing artists and providing engaging learning opportunities that contribute to the cultural, social, and economic vitality of the Southcoast.

It begins on April 2, 1923, when New Bedford opened its last new theater in the city’s downtown area. The city was once the richest in the world, and it was already home to two dozen dazzling theaters.

Barney Zeitz and his brothers envisioned the biggest and best theater in New Bedford. A “palace for the people,” as he called it, for live vaudeville performances. Designed by Frank Leary and Frank Walker, the two-story tapestry brick building is an adaption of the Georgian Revival style. Inside, décor included marble-columned walls, the Zeitz family “Z” shield accentuating the proscenium, silk tapestry on the walls, a frieze of gold leaf Grecian dancing muses, a large oval sunset scene on the ceiling, an orchestra rail of solid gum wood, and a $7,000 cut glass Czechoslovakian chandelier. The total project cost more than $12 million in today’s dollars.

The front is beautiful but I am liking the backside too.

Another mono edit, when I saw this I thought of a face watching me

Haha. True. It is looking like a face. I also often see faces in such geometrical constructions and designs

Oh yes! The face is right there, haha. This building is really interesting, and the exterior just makes me wonder about the inside, hmn. Interesting lighting and colors.

Great shots.

I always think it is interesting how these old theaters in downtown areas look so unassuming from the outside, but then you go inside and they are just so ornate and all the details are amazing. They really put so much work into making them amazing. It looks like this one is still hosting some great artists. I recognize quite a few of those from the hanging signs. Awesome photos and post!

They just don't build like that anymore, do they? They spared no expense as entertainment was a priority back then, wasn't it? They pulled out all the stops as far as the dance troupes and went for the glitz and glamour with decorating. I think people enjoyed life, perhaps even a little more than they do now, just differently.

I like the face! Did you see the bookends (birds) hanging out there?

I am glad that they are using the building and continuing to entertain the masses. New Bedford is such a cool town, I am so glad you call it home. I want to thank you for always providing fresh ideas and pictures every day. Thanks for the awesome support!!! The Big Z! Yes! I can see why!
Thank you for participating in #MarketFriday! I appreciate the time and effort that goes into putting a post together for the challenge. It is with great pleasure that I read through and realize how much we have all tried to include things in our world that may be unique to the area. I have learned so much about the different cultures of the world, especially the small things that go unnoticed except by those looking for them. Life is interesting, wherever you are, whatever you are doing. I hope the week has found you healthy and happy, as we all look to prosper in our way of life.

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  3. Post the pictures. Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post, it is too difficult to guess on some
    4. #MarketFriday must be your first tag.
Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post (#hive-196308) This is not required but appreciated.
    5. PLEASE Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it!!

I like the front of the building too compared to the back part. Your photos are as awesome as always!

Another mono edit, when I saw this I thought of a face watching me

I could see the face too! If my imaginations are so wild right now, I'm already thinking of a horror film out of this photo alone. 😂
