Market Friday at the port

Market Friday at the port

I’m back home and doing ok but still very run down and probably won’t be online much today but luckily I had a few posts prepared in advance including this one

Thanks for all the kind comments and support

But as some call me Mr positive here’s a positive spin on the last few days I have been saying I need to loose weight recently well I did that lost just under 7lbs in 3 days

A post for Market Friday hosted by @dswigle, if you haven't followed her yet you should she is one of the kindest and most supportive people here on Hive, a comment from her is like a ray of sunshine on your page.
This is the one tag and challenge that I always make a point of joining, and also look through the posts of others that join the challenge and seeing markets from all around the world.

For this weeks post, I thought I would share some details or I could say tools of the trade on some of the commercial fishing boats in the port here in New Bedford.
I have mentioned before it is the busiest fishing port in the country, to give an idea of how much, on average 1 million pounds of seafood enters and exits the port by truck, rail, and boat every day.
Back in 1840 when Whaling was the big thing here, New Bedford was the wealthiest city in the world

So these fishing tools end up supplying a lot of the fish around the country to various markets

Now I am no expert on the fine art of fishing, whether with a rod of a pier , in a river or on a beach, neither on the commercial fisherman's work, but I do think those yellow things in this next shot are lobster traps.

Now New Bedford or even Massachusetts does not catch the most Lobsters, that goes to the state of Maine

however New Bedford is known for its scallops
New Bedford scallops are prized around the world. Each year, nearly 50 million pounds of sea scallops land on New Bedford docks. During the height of the season, 500,000 pounds of scallop meats cross our docks in a single day.

A bunch of buoys and floatation thingies and a few more traps

And yet even more

and a last shot to finish off this post, but now I am thinking I see all these what I think are Lobster traps, in this post, I wonder how Scallops are caught, maybe with some other devices I have seen, I think but am not sure they use trawls or dredge type things to get scallops

And that’s all folks

Good to hear you back home and on the mend, wishing yourself and Lulu a wonderful Easter weekend.

Plenty required to go out on the water to catch different tasty morsels for the plate.

Always on the lookout for good shots, an interesting city that has a lot of fishing income, great, I am a native of an agricultural area but ended up marrying an islander and well seafood is always part of the menu haha, always a pleasure to visit you.

I’m not an expert on the fishing art either, but I enjoy a lot the topic. I like your post and to be able to see the different elements for this activity.

Wow, 7 pounds! I can't say as though I want to go on that kind of a diet! I got a little exercise today. Moved a yard of top soil out of the back of my truck. Take it easy and keep taking care of yourself.

@TatuadoJay Very interesting publication. I lived two years in the Colombian coasts to be exact in Cordoba, San Antero, and fishing is one of the economy that moves that municipality while the tourism season arrives. I went out on several occasions to share in the lakes and it is a unique and genuine experience.

Thank you for your publication, it made me remember those beautiful memories of the sea.

@tattoodjay I am a 3rd generation commercial fisherman, but in Florida, down here the lobster traps are all made of wood. I am not sure these are lobster traps but they might use these for them up north. Also, the escape rings in the traps are mighty small to be for lobster. Escape rings are placed in traps to let the undersized ones escape. I would like to know what they are, maybe next time you can ask someone what they are for. Scallops are caught with trawls.

Thanks and yes indeed i am, feeling a little better this morning, I suspect low iron levels and three days of a liquid diet knocked my back, but feel I am heading in the right direction now

The commercial fishermen here use a dredge with a raking bar to rake up the bottom where they are. They use the same for oysters, mussels, and clams. I think most of them use the same method.

I love this post a million times over. The sea life and working on the water is one of my favorite subjects to explore. Great shots and info! Speaking of which, I haven't had a lobster in months. I have been hooked on those blue crabs, but ready to move on!

Thanks so much for supporting #MarketFriday!

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world. Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

1.Go to any type of market, or anywhere where you pay money for a service. It can be a museum, a movie theatre, or an auction. Be creative!
2.Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost? We like to compare prices, otherwise, it is just pictures of a market!
3.Post the pictures! No out-of-focus ones, please! Tell a little bit about the pictures that you post. Having many pictures to scroll through does not make a better post without explanation.
4.Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post #hive-196308 (this is not required, but appreciated) If you don't, then #MarketFriday should be your first tag
5.Following me and reblogging the post so more see it would be appreciated !! Not a rule, just appreciated, more vision for more views on your posts!
. You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post.
6.#MarketFriday post should be submitted sometime on Friday UTC
7.The post MUST be in English
8.Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it

Sounds like a trip to a seafood restaurant is in your future!

I love talking to our watermen! I went down to the Choptank on my way to the shore and watched them going out last week.
