A few more Historic buildings here in New Bedford

I have been walking in areas with historic houses a bit recently; I find myself amazed by some of these impressive buildings and imagining what life was like back in the day when New Bedford, MA, was the whaling capital of the world and, at the time, the richest city in the world.

Times sure have changed, but I am glad so many of these historic houses remain, and many seem so well maintained.

Let me start with the The Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum at 396 County Street, which is a National Historic Landmark.

It was built in 1834; this Greek Revival whaling mansion—the only one in New England open to the public with its original grounds intact—chronicles 150 years of city history across three prominent families.

They also have a beautiful rose garden on the grounds, and I am sad to admit this is the only museum here in New Bedford that I have visited so far.

I went to Madison street here to look for a articular house, but this one caught my eye near the one i was looking for.

It is the Jireh Swift Jr. House, a historic residence located at 96 Madison Street
Built in 1857, and is an Italianate and Renaissance Revival house.
The color and awesome architectural details caught my eye

And this is the house I was looking for the Whalehouse.
It is also known as the Abby Taber Hunt mansion at 100 Madison Street.
It is a grand 1855 Victorian built by whaling merchant Henry Taber. It is historically notable because Herman Melville’s sister lived there, and the author likely visited. Today, the property operates as a short-term vacation rental
