downtown New Bedford Historic District
Good Morning and have a good day
Today I will share a few shots in the Historic District downtown here in New Bedford
A little about its history
The New Bedford Historic District is a National Historic Landmark District west of the community's waterfront.
During the 19th century, when the city was the center of the American whaling industry, this was its downtown, and at that time was one of the richest cities in the world.
After its decline in the early and mid-20th century, through the efforts of local activist groups the district has since been preserved and restored to appear much as it was during that period.
Most of its buildings were erected between 1790 and 1855 by Russell Warren and other builders working in the Federal and Greek Revival architectural styles. Many of them reflect the legacy of whaling in the city's development.
The district was designated a National Historic Landmark (NHL) and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. Later it was recognized as a local historic district and protected by local zoning. One building within it, the U.S. Customhouse, is the oldest such facility currently in use and has been independently recognized as an NHL. Since 1996 the district has also been a part of New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park.
One thing I love as much as some of the cool old buildings is the Belgian Block streets even though I still think of them as cobblestone streets

Here we have the Moby Dick Brewing Co restaurant, drawing inspiration for its name from the city's rich maritime history—most notably its association with Herman Melville’s Moby Dick

It looks like a cool place. Do they hold special events down there in the summer? Where I live they often block of parts of downtown so people can walk around and listen to bands and stuff. Like a little street fair. This feels like it would be perfect for that sort of thing.
Yes indeed they do, they have afew events, mostly in the evenings so I seldom get to them, they have a car cruise 50s night which I missed this year and someother events with music in various parts of the city
Oh car shows are always fun. We don't go to the ones near us that much either. Usually we are ready to just be done for the day by the time it gets to be about 5:00 PM!
sound slike us these days as well, have supper/dinner at 5:30 and were done for the day LOL
Haha yeah, that's about right!
That is a beautiful place! That's what I love about the east coast is the plethora of historical areas like that, it's like stepping back in time. Out west there isn't much that's really all that old. The cobblestone streets still make me think of San Juan, Puerto Rico with the blue cobblestones. Such cool old places! Thanks for sharing those great pictures!
and thanks for your support, I do love that about the east, so much history and often preserved
Such a nice walk through history. I really like how you mentioned the Belgian block streets, they really give the area so much character and make it feel like stepping back in time. The old buildings look well kept and full of stories, especially with their link to the whaling past. Your photos show the charm of the district so well. I think the mix of restaurants and historic spots makes downtown New Bedford a place worth visiting.

Crisp shots there . What time of the day was it? Place is like a ghost town.
thanks and it was early morning before sunrise hence like a ghost town, most of my walks are at that time I find it so peaceful and calm
Yeah it reminds me of 28 days later . That scene in London . They shot it at 6am on a Sunday morning . They didn’t even have to close off anywhere e
I remember that scene and I always thought they must have closed it off
Yeah it was filmed on a shoestring budget and they just went out on a Sunday morning . I loved that
