Allens Mill

Allens Mill

Good Morning, today I thought I would share a few shots of a historic sight I visited in Dartmouth MA one morning

I had been to another spot that morning for a sunrise walk, but I had read about this spot and decided to swing by and check it out

Allen’s Mill is a small piece of the 283-acre Destruction Brook Woods Reserve, but a large part of the area’s identity. Russells Mills Village was one of the first recorded settlements in Dartmouth, named after local miller Joseph Russell. As the village was being established, one of the first orders of business was to construct a mill.

Johnny Cake meal, made from a hard kernel corn, aptly named flint corn, was one of the products produced at the mill. Not only was the mill the place in town to grind down corn into Johnny Cake meal and flour, but it also acted as a town center. Town notices were posted, and many gathered to catch up on the local gossip.

Throughout the years, over 30 mills were established in Dartmouth alone. Many have been lost to time with only their foundations left. The only mill still standing in its entirety is Allen’s Mill.

I thought there was a trail head at this location and my plan had been to see the mill and then walk the trail, but either I didnt look well enough or this is sperate and doesnt have a trail head, but either way it was worth checking out

It's definitely a cool old building and the surrounding area is beautiful. I can see why people would want to congregate in that area to socialize. It's crazy to think about how many there were back in that time. It just show how important the milling process was to the growth of the region.

Great photos. The shot with the rail fence is a perfect capture. And detail shots like the mill stones are always good.

That's awesome. I love historic building like that! That was part of the fun of living back east, lot of historic building. It's nice that it's still standing and they're preserving it. I could see how a mill would be an important place, without it they wouldn't have needed ingredients to bake. Some of my ancestors might have been right as well, great post!

Despite its size, I think this cute little house is quite cozy.
