Print Yard for rent
In the morning I decided to go for a little walk. In the afternoon we were promised first heat and then rain with a thunderstorm, but the morning was nice and sunny. I walked along the narrow streets of Petrogradsky Island, and soon found myself near the Print Yard (Pechatniy Dvor). It was a large complex of industrial buildings, which used to be a printing house, but now contained a business center and stores.
I remembered that I had recently seen a photo online of an interesting monument on the grounds, so I decided to try to go inside and take a picture of that monument. The industrial building takes up an entire block, and I didn't know which side the entrance was on. So I went through the first door I saw and found myself on the first floor of one of the buildings.
I knew right away that I was in the market area. All along the floor there were different stores. I counted three big chain supermarkets, and I took a few photos of the assortment, with the idea of adding these photos to my story. These are typical store shelves, the same kind of yogurt or fruit you can buy anywhere.
I went outside, and continued to walk around, looking for another entrance. Soon I saw an old tall wooden door. This time I got into one of the old factory buildings. The rooms in this building are for rent, and I came across some interesting workshops and studios as I wandered through the corridors.
Behind one door was a yoga class, another room had easels set up in anticipation of a painting class. A little farther down the hall was a completely renovated section, and signs on the doors read "Quiet! Filming in progress."
I approached the closed doors several times and saw a huge hall behind them - probably a former workshop. The hall is being renovated. I wondered what they were going to do here.
I took one of the stairs up to the top, to the "captain's bridge" with a bright yellow door. The door was padlocked, but the rustic doormat in front of the door seemed to hint that the place was not forgotten or abandoned.
I never found the way out into the courtyard, to the monument I wanted to see in the beginning, but I saw so many interesting things that I wasn't disappointed at all. On the contrary, I really liked this place, which preserved its old atmosphere.

I really liked the old place too! There is something warm and wonderful about the places that were built yesterday... or perhaps it makes me feel nostalgic, even if they aren't from my era. If feels familiar or broken in? I can't put my finger on it, but, it gives me a nice feeling.
That hall that you thought might have been a former workroom? You might laugh, but, it looks like a former aquatic area, with all the windows and large size. I fantasized that the pool was covered up and is no longer. It is rare to see a building like that, leaving much that doesn't need a do over and can do well enough on its own. Some of the old commercial buildings here do some of that, opting for the industrial look. But, eventually, the vendors like to redo some of their space.
How odd to have three large grocery stores in the same building, yes? I wonder if there is a favorite one of the three or if they might be of equal reputation? I want to thank you for always going the extra mile to make our #MarketFriday a fun visit. I hope you find your way out to the courtyard eventually! Those painted peacocks were such a wonderful added feature!
#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.
Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday
It really does look a lot like a aquatic area! I hadn't thought of that before - but it really is! I'm worried that renovations might ruin the place. I like it the way it is - with those iron floors, old doors and brick walls.
Three stores in one building is something we see a lot. Retail chains fight for the market and rush to take all the available space, but none of these stores can afford to rent an entire floor! In the end, the customers win.
Thank you so much!
It surely does! It was the only thing I could think of when I saw it. I agree that the renovations may ruin it, and I said that I do like it the way it is. It is like renovating grandma's house! It just wouldn't happen, the change would be devastating.
I actually meant three food stores, I thought you meant three food stores in the same building. You do see retail stores on the same floor, nothing unusual and for the reasons you give.
Thanks again for your wonderful posts!
