Market Friday: the exhibition of photography from the 1990s

If I were asked this, it would be difficult for me to choose one favorite photographer among those masters of light and shadow who lived and worked in St. Petersburg. But one of the first ones I would definitely remember is Boris Smelov. So when I saw the announcement of an upcoming exhibition of three St. Petersburg photographers - Boris Smelov, Maria Snigirevskaya and Alexei Zelensky - I immediately made plans to visit.

I went to this exhibition on one of its first days. I already know (from my own experience) that it is better not to put off such events until later: time goes by too quickly, and it may not be enough. It happens to me sometimes, but not this time.

I had bought an electronic ticket in advance, so I didn't have to go to the box office. Many other visitors did the same, so there was no line at the box office, even though the exhibition halls were crowded. The idea of visiting the exhibition at the very beginning has a significant disadvantage - in the first days there are so many visitors. I sometimes had to pause and wait for space to free up in the next hall.

The white walls of the exhibition halls were additionally decorated with the figures of the heroes of the photographs. It was as if the decoration was a bridge between the 1990s and the present, between the space of pictures and the people in the rooms.

The exhibition takes place in the front building of the exhibition center. The exhibition center building was built in the 19th century in the Art Nouveau style and deserves its own story. I was very much captured by the subjects of the photos and paid little attention to the architectural decorations, but still took a few pictures of the stoves.

After the exhibition I went back to the ticket office for a bit. It housed not only the cash register, but also a small store selling postcards, art albums, books, souvenirs. Those in need of physical refreshment after a spiritual meal can buy a cup of coffee or tea, candy, and gingerbread. I was especially interested in the photo posters, but I found other souvenirs interesting as well.

I sometimes get all caught up in things and I don't get to do what I wanted, so I agree that we should do things right away so we don't let it slide!

I really like the exhibition halls, especially using their images in such a whimsical way. It made me smile to see the feet sticking out of the oven! :) I am so glad you went and got to enjoy these photographers, especially Punktom.

I certainly enjoyed this post and those stoves!!! The history alone is amazing and I really appreciate their rustic beauty! Thank you so much, @tatdt!! You always bring me the very best!

I think it is important that you know how much I appreciate the time and effort put into posts. Thank you for your participating in #MarketFriday! I enjoy learning about your world and how it is to live in it. I find it interesting to compare standards, but, more than standards, by how we find the quality of our life with different indicators that the world does. It is not always about the wealth in money, but includes many other things including being as healthy as possible, being educated, but, not necessarily in school. I feel like a person is educated if they aquire knowledge and use it for the better good and happiness of the society they are living in. It is with great pleasure that I read through this and all of the posts, with these thoughts in mind.

I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to get to know you and your piece of the world just a little bit better. I have learned so much about the different cultures of the world, I especially love the small things in life and make a point to give them notice. Life has been interesting for me this week, and I hope your week has found you happy and healthy, as we all look to prosper in our way of life.

I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world. Please take the time to read a couple #MarketFriday posts and leave a genuine comment behind. It is important to interact within the community, allowing for others to bond with each other. The fun is in getting to know people and making a positive contribution to community life. I am pretty sure that is why I joined Hive. All this fun and money too. What if not to love?

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  1. Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service. It can be a movie, an auction, or even a museum. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or product.
    Take pictures! Be creative!
  2. Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost? Was it expensive? Did it go up or down? A scroll of pictures with few words doesn't usually work.
  3. Post the pictures. Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post, it is too difficult to guess about some.
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post (#hive-196308) This is not required but appreciated.
PLEASE Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it!!
  5. Following me and reblogging the post would be appreciated, but not a rule, more vision for more views on the #MarketFriday posts!
    7. You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post.

As always, please remember! #MarketFriday loves you!

My only regret at this exhibition was that it only took up one floor of the exhibition space. The photos are very interesting - they are about the difficult time of the 1990s. It was a hard turning point in the 1990s. But at the same time it was a time of our youth. Thank you so much for your attention to my post and for this challenge!

For me, pictures like that were daring for the times.

It had to be a hard turning point on so many levels. I cannot grasp what the 90s felt like to someone who had lived that way their entire existence.

My cousins were in former Czechoslovakia but one of them escaped to Canada once and was deported back and then again to the US. They punished the family in not-so-obvious ways. We live in such a conflicted world.

I am glad you got to the exhibition! I think I would have liked to have seen it. Thank you as it is always a pleasure to see your posts!

It's very hard to tell about the 1990s in Russia. This is when you were born, a child, and went to school in a strong state, one of the two strongest states on the planet. And then suddenly that country ceased to exist. Next you are completely free, but you don't have time to enjoy your freedom - you have to get food and take care of your family's safety.

People's fates in the twentieth century changed in such bizarre ways! Thank you!

I have to admit, that must have been a mixed bag of joy. :(
