Spring Color

Hauskaa Vappua!

Which pretty much means happy first of May!

And it is a nice holiday in Finland because after a bleak winter, it is a welcoming of Spring with some color and a little silliness. Helium balloons, fairy floss, silly hats and dumping technical university students into the cold river.

Each city and often suburbs, have a Vappu market that has a bouncing castle or two and some food vendors. If the weather is good, they are filled and despite rain being forecast for the afternoon, there was plenty of sunshine in the morning and people were out in force. One of the things I like about Finland, is that these kinds of events aren't very special in terms of what is presented, but people really enjoy supporting them, milling about, seeing what there is to see. Finns are pretty laid back in this regard and don't mind being outside.

The city was full.
For a small city.

image.png

And Smallsteps was having a ball.
And a bounce.

image.png

And cat got some fish.

image.png

That is "muikku" - a freshwater whitefish that is fried up en masse and eaten whole. It is pretty weird for some people, but it is about as close to "fish and chips" as you get in Finland, so I don't mind it. Smallsteps loves it too, and luckily we were able to find a place that had gluten-free batter. Normally, we can't eat it out and about at these events, so she was pretty excited.

image.png

And then it was on to some sideshow games. Which brings back terrible memories to me of being at Bakken in Denmark and spending about 50€ trying to win something for my then fiance, only to end up getting a crappy toy from a fishing game, where "everyone gets a prize" - Smallsteps did the fishing, I did the knock over the cans one.

Can you guess what I was aiming to win?

image.png

I didn't win.

But they let Smallsteps choose a crappy prize to make her feel better for having such a loser of a father.

It was not the bomb.

Then it was onto the main event...

Fairy floss

They have it in buckets now and we haven't found the "on a stick" kind for years, but today there was someone doing it properly, so we got a couple sticks of it.

I asked my wife to marry me on this day, nine years ago.

image.png

She hasn't changed that much in her appearance. Her personality however...
Owners start to resemble their dogs.

Woof.

After the sugar rush, it was onto finding a balloon for Smallsteps.

image.png

Which is easier said than done in the wind...

But eventually, it was done and a fairy with rainbow-colored wings was coming home with us - which sounds like we might have been visiting the Sydney Mardi Gras.

image.png

All up, it was a great way to end what was a welcome long weekend and tomorrow it will be back into the fray at work, trying to close out my quarter in order to get a bit of a bonus. Which is needed, based on the prices of a bit of spun sugar, a foil balloon and some fried fish.

Totally worth it though.

Wow, that is a lot of people. It looks like it was an awesome time. We are still expected to get a bit of snow so I don't think Spring is quite here yet. I did have to mow my lawn already, so it is just a vicious cycle from here on out!

Haven't cut the grass yet, but it is meant to snow toward the end of the week again. It has been pretty cold the last few days, dropping below freezing overnight.

Those are pretty big portions of spun sugar.

Which brings back terrible memories to me of being at Bakken in Denmark and spending about 50€

Yesterday I lost 30+ hive on dice. Strategies are great...while they are working.

They were pretty big, but used to be bigger. I can eat far too much of it, but shared with Smallsteps instead.

Why do you play those gambling games? Do you know if you are up or down?

Here is someone who has lost tens of thousands on them.

These are the things I like to enjoy as much as possible with my family. I do, but I find it hard to share images/videos of my travels. I rejoice when others share their experiences, I am transported and become part of them in my imagination.

Furthermore, I love fish, and little Smallsteps enjoys it. Candyfloss, I don't know if that's what they call it in Finland, but here in Canada it's known as Cotton Candy, and it's very typical in winter and spring. Spring is not yet in full swing, but the snow is gone, I guess in a week we will see the meadows in bloom, the geosmin, and the petricor.

You should share! Keep it simple and personal, but you don't have to share your own people :)

Fairy floss is what it is called in Australia. Here in Finland it is "hattara"

I had to look up "geosim and petricor" :D
But yes. THe trees are starting to bud with leaves now, though mostly., it is a bit of a dust bowl and everything looks dead still. It is amazing how much energy must be used to create spring each year.

Can't be environmentally friendly!!

;D

Geosmin, which in Greek means scent of the earth, is responsible for this characteristic smell of wet earth. It is all due to a bacterium: Streptomyces coelicor or Albert's bacteria.

The word petricor is documented as an adaptation of the English petrichor in reference to the smell of rain. It is currently under study for inclusion in the academic dictionary.

The welcoming of spring is 21 March in my country as well as in some Asian countries. So, they don't celebrate Labor Day there on May Day?

So, they don't celebrate Labor Day there on May Day?

Yes, it is celebrat4ed too. This spring one is far, far older though. It dates back to some nun 1500 years ago.

What we did see though was a neo-nazi parade walking the streets.

I think I once told you that Finland is seen as one of the happiest countries in the world. I love the fact that they celebrate almost every win.
It is a good thing

Happy new month to you too. What a wonderful festival. Your wife look very pretty and there was not much change in her in the older picture and though i don't like candy floss, your daughter's cloth got my attention. Pretty girl she is.

In my opinion these parties are always beautiful and, that of the Finns, I think is the right approach to experience them.

Here too today was a party even if, I confess, we didn't do anything in particular and indeed I spent the afternoon poking at the PC.

Tomorrow we start again and the day promises to be as intense as the rest of the week
.... lucky that with the holiday Monday it will seem shorter eh eh!

Having it laid back is pretty nice really, as there isn't quit ethe pressure that there can be in some places in crowds. Though, Finns are terrible in crowds!

How is the new job treating you?

Well let's say the new job isn't bad, I cook and do something I like.
Unfortunately being part time the salary is low and not low.

Where to find an additional way to monetize.
If there was a job to do in the afternoon I would take it immediately unfortunately at the moment there are none.

We'll see, before the birth of Junior I'll come up with something 😉

How are you?

lol guess I've started to forget swedish, had to google if it was "glada" or "klara vappen", leaning more on the latter cause why would it be klara in general unless I specifically remembered it for this. Anyway, found this image.

Oh may 1st is also holiday in Finland, good to hear it and we both enjoyed our holiday.

Your wife appearance seems didn't change after 9 years. She is still beautiful and look young.

Oh that sugar candy, so big. Here usually it's colors is pink.

Your daughter enjoyed most that day having a quality time with her parents.

I love the name fairy floss - I think it is much nicer than cotton candy!

And I love the celebration of Spring - it is my favorite season after all: the rebirth of plants, the warming of the weather, and of course more outdoor festivals. While I don't typically find myself going to city celebrations of spring like you have in Finland, it does mean that outdoor music festivals start to pop up on our calendars.

In fact, that was part of the reason why we came to Spain, and Ibiza in particular, for this holiday - we went to the opening party at the #1 club in the world - Hi Ibiza. Then in two weeks it is off to Las Vegas for the biggest Electronic Dance Music festival in the US - the Electric Daisy Carnival. Now all I have to do is work up the courage to propose to my partner during a spring festival like you did. Easier said than done!
