Snakes and Ruins

avatar

I don't know what it is about being away on vacation, but everything seems a little more special - even my feet. Well, maybe not, unless you have a niche foot fetish - but they are looking pretty sexy.

1000036983.jpg

And last night, when we got back to the villa, I went to take some photos around the corner and then Smallsteps and my wife went to the door and were greeted by a snake. I didn't hear the screams (from my wife), but the snake was more scared than her and buggered off down the side of the building. But this evening, I was on the balcony and saw the little fella sunning himself on the grass.

1000036982.jpg

I don't know what kind of snake it is, so I am not going to catch it.

Otherwise I might have Crocodile Hunter-ed it.

I am also getting tired of the pool (day 2) so broke up the day with a quick walk to an old ruin that is around the corner.

1000036990.jpg

This last shot is of my walk back from the ruin where I went along the shore side, and found a nudist beach. How come the only people using nudist beaches are creepy looking men? I didn't venture down to ask, but they seemed to be enjoying the sound of crashing waves. It definitely wasn't a swimming beach.

And, this was parked in the harbor for the day too. It is called "Trident" and after some Googling, I discovered it is a charter boat. It sleeps twelve. *Yes, only twelve. It has 15 crew! And, while I thought our trip away for the week was expensive, a week on that boat will set you back 550,000€ + tax + expenses.

1000036996.jpg

I guess if you earn 30 million a year, it is a week's salary.

And these are happy people who found a pizza place that make a gluten-free base. It has been harder than we thought it'd be to find decent food for Smallsteps and wife, but we are surviving and won't waste away. Though, it is going to put a dent in our budget.

1000036994.jpg

Tonight we walked to another area for dinner and the only place (out of the six we checked) that had something they could eat, was a fancy Sheraton Hotel restaurant. The food was okay, though not great, but at least the mojitos were decent.

1000036979.jpg

1000036981.jpg

And, a little more of the view. I don't know if there are many locals that live in this area, but there must be places like this all along the coast that they do. Lucky bastards. It is beautiful.

And, since this is a pool trip, there has to be some obligatory swimming and bikini photos. We found a rashie for Smallsteps last night, so didn't have to worry as much about her getting burnt. However, we kept on slopping on sunscreen throughout the day.

Slip, slop, slap.

That is what it was when I was a kid. Slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen, and slap on a hat. I have been surprised at how many very tanned children there are here. It is like their parents don't care at all about sun protection - but granted, looking at the parents, they might not care that much. Some however, seem more intent on being fashionably tanned, rather than being oblivious to the potential damage.

1000036705.jpg

Smallsteps has become a bit more confident today especially and going under this little fountain was a big step for her, as she hasn't been keen to get her face too wet on purpose. However, now, she is going under a bit and also putting in some real swimming strokes. It is great to see and I am of course always beside her for now, pushing her on to more the failure point. I want her to know the line of what she can and can't do, in a safe environment. She is having a ball playing this game.

1000036999.jpg

My wife under the same fountain looks like she is enjoying a golden shower.

1000036998.jpg'

We all have a past I guess.

1000036997.jpg

And, a couple rare images of Smallsteps and I together that weren't taken by me. We went into the waves a bit deeper today, so that she could feel what they were really like. It was windier today and the tide was coming in, so they were bigger than she had felt on day one, and was a little worried, but felt safe in Daddy's arms.

1000037003.jpg

1000037007.jpg

And "finally" (it will be day three), tomorrow we will head to Dubrovnik and wander around the old town. I am pretty excited, though I am mentally and emotionally preparing myself to try and be patient, since I will want to take a lot of photos and, I will be the only one. I expect a fair amount of complaining about tired legs - which are only ever tired when doing what I want, not what they want.

But, there will be a café or two they can sit in whilst I wander around the House of the Dragon.

Looking forward to it!!

Oh sweet! Looks like you all are having a fantastic time. The smiles on the ladies' faces say it all. If you wind up with a dent in your head from the golden shower comment, please do take a pic and show us lol

That would be a fabulous place to live! I could imagine sitting outside in the morning sipping a lovely coffee...

Exactly. A nice glass balcony overlooking the crystal waters...

I am safe from bumps - she doesn't read these often ;)

I loved the photos from the ruins, the locals are very fortunate to have such a beautiful landscape.

It looks like you''re having a great time, and even the reader is enjoying every post.
I'm new here and I wanted to know, are you a fan of mojitos?
I'll be sure to keep an eye out for the post about Dubrovnik 🤩

It is nice here, but too much pool is too much (for me).

Definitely a snake - about a meter long and according to my wife, as fast as a cheetah. Take my wife's comments with a grain of salt though.

I love too much pool,lol.

Damn, I would be both wildly excited same terrified of they were snakes roaming about. I would obviously try and kill a few and wear them like a hat 🤠

Not a snake. It's a European Glass Lizard. They have no legs. Perfectly harmless.

European Glass Lizard

Cheers!

Though... isn't a legless lizard a snake? :D :D

Only superficially. They are different, as they have moveable eyelids, their jaws are inflexible, and possess ear openings. They eat different things. They do have a forked tongue, much like a snake, but shorter. They also flick it out to collect air molecules - their sense of smell. Like our noses, but not. LOL We have them here too, although they are Eastern Glass Lizards by name here.

You were right! It is one of those legless lizard types... :D

Slow worms!! I thought it had the funny look of them. I have never seen one of them in the wild either!

This definitely looks like a really beautiful place! I am glad that you guys are able to enjoy this time. I agree with you on the pool thing. We were supposed to go to Mexico with some friends and we ultimately decided not to. Mainly because they wanted to go for a week and after one or two days at the pool, we need other entertainment.

I don't really get the sense in being somewhere completely different, just to sit around a pool the whole time. Maybe I will learn as I age and slow down even more :D

we need other entertainment.

Who doesn’t love a golden shower?!

Looks wonderful man! I hear you on the sight seeing but others don’t want to site see and get mad lol. I would love to drop the fam off and go wander around a historic area for some photos and sights! The complaints indeed are focused on those activities not the ones like running up and down the beach. Go figure :D

Who doesn’t love a golden shower?!

Without kink shaming, don't you think some of these kinks are just a little strange? :D

I am hoping that in time, Smallsteps will appreciate the historical stuff more - wife is a lost cause.

Nah, rashie is the suit/ shirt. The term is from surfing :D

The bucket hats are good, though I am a baseball cap kinda guy myself :)

Time and place for each hat. I'm definitely choosing the bucket hat if I want to keep my ears covered and in the shade, but I've also got a few baseball caps if I'm doing something sporty and just want shade for my line of sight. Let's Go Mets!

Very nice clicks. Snake was looking very terrible. I don't like such creatures. Lizards, cockroach, bettles, I just hate them. Mostly When I spent my vacations in mountain areas, I have to face them.

Depending on the location, it is what it is in terms of the creatures. In Finland, there is almost nothing...

You will love Dubrovnik!!! Bring extra film. Hehehe No lie, you will want to toss the girls a few bills and meet them for dinner. Wait, no! Sunset! Don't miss the sunset on the water.

Okay. That is not a snake. It is a lizard. A European Glass Lizard. Legless lizard. Totally harmless. Wait, you are leaving there, right? So, it doesn't matter.

All of the Croatian Coastline looks like that, the whole thing. Wait till you see Dubrovnik. Wait to be wowed. Travel the walled city and enjoy. This will be the best part of Croatia. It is expensive there, probably the most $$ in the Balkans. But, you have seen higher prices, no doubt. Don't forget to go to Old Town. Best medieval city !!! Go to the top and see all of the city!

I can comment on this post till the cows come home, but, the bed is overdue and just know that this post was sweet, your girls are both beautiful and Yay Smallsteps!! What an absolute best time ever!!!

Have a great time tomorrow and it will be crowded - it's a given.

I would love a few days walking around the city there - might go back on Monday. Will soon be off for a wander though and the plan is, to drop them at a café as soon as the complaining starts ;)

Going to walk as much as we/ I can through the city and definitely will try to find a nice place for sunset. We are only 10 km away now, so a taxi back will be fine. And yes, I have heard it is expensive (as expected), but compared to Finland, it can't be that much more.

Thanks for snake info too!

sleep well.

Finding a good food is a problem for me when I am abroad except in Greece and Balkan countries because we have the same or similar foods due to the history :)

Smallsteps and my wife went to the door and were greeted by a snake.

It's a risky place then. You guys need to be careful there.

I don't know what kind of snake it is, so I am not going to catch it.

Do you like to catch snakes? I don't like it and I never think to catch it.

they seemed to be enjoying the sound of crashing waves

I also like the sounds of crashing waves. In the night time, the sound becomes more horrible but I enjoy it very much.

It seems you are enjoying the time very well there.

Never caught one, but I am game to do so in Finland where they aren't very poisonous.

It's always more exhausting having to suffer through all the boring things other people insist on wasting time with instead of the infinitely more exciting and important things that you want to do XD

Was that ruin actually around the corner or around the corner like the corner store? :D

This looks like a perfect vacay spot. I always wanted to visit the million islands of Croatia but haven't made it yet. Smallsteps and your wife both seem to be enjoying it a lot, so I'm sure they'll let you enjoy exploring the town tomorrow 🤞.

p.s. I believe that is actually a legless lizard/Glass Lizard, not a snake = harmless, personally, I still wouldn't touch because - wildlife.
