Sent to the Wall

What a day!

This might be one of the shortest posts I have made on this chain, as I have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to get these photos transferred, edited (on phone) and then uploaded here. It has been hours!!

But, after spending a beautiful day walking in the sweaty-ass heat of Dubrovnik, I wanted to get a few shots posted to give "my" view of the old town of Game of Thrones fame. Croatia and especially Dubrovnik owe that show hundreds of millions by now, as while it isn't plastered everywhere here, a lot of the tourists are only here because of it.

image.png

Still, what has been a most pleasant surprise is that even though this little city of about forty thousand gets flooded with tourists, the place is organized, clean, the staff everywhere friendly and helpful and seem to actually enjoy their jobs. It is a contrast to places like Milan or worse, Paris, where they tolerate (barely) tourism because of the money it brings.

And, walking through some of the museum areas, they have done a very, very nice job of restoring and building it for usage. It has been a surprise to say the least at how functional and stylish the designs are.

We did a lot of walking today and Smallsteps was a trooper, but I would have liked to have done a lot more. Still, we did the wall and walked up and down stairs, as well as dropped into some very quiet museum exhibits that were hidden in the walls, like the foundry. There were a lot of people in the main areas, but it was pretty quiet just off them, so it was nice to walk and take some photos.

However, I feel that I missed a million opportunities for good shots, because I always felt a bit rushed with Smallsteps and my wife going ahead too far. I could spend days shooting in a place like this, but I only took a few hundred images all up.

What was also nice, was that we went to a little are just outside the wall so Smallsteps could cool off in the water. It wasn't set up for small children, but she was able to get up to her waist with the waves and was happy. Now she can say that she has swum there.

The other thing that is amusing, is how many people live in the old city, in the very old homes, right up near the top of the wall. It is really amazing to see and I loved all the washing hung out on lines, just waiting for a dragon to burn them down.

I am hoping that we can go back there one day more, but I am not sure we will be able to swing it. It also seemed like it would be a nice place to spend a Saturday night out with friends, going on the way people were dressed in the evening as we were leaving.

Damn it, this is already 500 words - I wasn't planning on writing and instead just let the images tell the story of not really what we saw, but hopefully a bit of the feel that comes with it. I have others to add, but it was a struggle to transfer for some reason, so I will add more later at some point.

Enjoy and comment which is your favorite. :)

Wow, I only watched the first season of GoT, so I probably don't know much. That last picture is awesome though! It looks like this has been a really memorable trip for you!

It has been great. I am glad that this is Smallsteps' first, as she may remember parts of it, and won't be bored of travel by the time she is more willing to walk :)

Dude you've got to go back and watch it all. Great series.... Other favourites of mine Sopranos, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Ozark, Peaky Blinders to give some context and see if we have similar taste...

I have watched Breaking Bad, Ozark, Peaky Blinders. I also watched Sons of Anarchy. My wife loved that one. Animal Kingdom was pretty good too.

Oh yes we liked sons of Anarchy too 👌 If you haven't seen The Wire or The Sopranos you're a lucky man, would love to be able to watch them for the for the first time ever again

It's a spinoff of sons of anarchy. Based on the Mayans motor cycle club. Good stuff.

Ah very good, I must tell herself about it, are any of the same characters in it?

Yes, a few. They come and they go. It's mainly about new characters but they bring back some favorites every now and then. I actually feel it is a lot darker than Sons was.

Without a doubt, my favorite one is the last one.😎
Smallstep was born to be the Queen of Westeros 👸🏼🐉
(I also liked the one with the view of the sea and part of the Wall, the contrast of the blue of the see with the white, i loved it)

Mine too. She is so serious in it and has the right amount of "hard day" in her face :D

These are really beautiful photos 😍 I like pictures 1-8, 10-19 and 21 and 22 best. Where Smallsteps is holding on in the water, picture no. 18 and the last picture no. 22 with the sword are really pretty. But picture no. 12 is also totally adorable, how the two of them smile so beautifully 🥰

I have not watched GoT, simply because I would rather be here than watching TV, but your photos are breathtaking! I love the laundry on the line shot and all of the photos of your girls together will be family treasures!
Thanks for your very helpful support! 😘

The laundry on the line is one of my favorites. I had to wait a bit for it and took a couple to make sure :)

Thanks for your very helpful support! 😘

You are welcome. I sent a Curangel that way too.

Dubrovnik is a wonderful old city with a rich history and has been full of tourists for as long as I can remember. Surely, one of the most visited places on the Adriatic coast. Good photos.

It is more expensive than I thought it would be, as the prices are similar to Finland in most places, but, to be expected of a tourist city.

These photographs are spectacular, more poetic and mystical than other photos I have seen of yours. Vacationing has you tapping into your hidden wonders, and those of your family. Very positive stuff! I hope you can find your way to vacay more often. My favorite is, without question, smallsteps and the swords. But man, the rest of them are fabulous too.

I'm with you - I should definitely be on vacation more ;)

I really enjoy wandering around cities and trying to capture a slightly different angle than what others might. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes not - but it is in the attempt, right?

Damn that place looks beautiful! I’m guessing that’s where they set Kings Landing in GoT, looks like it from whAt I remember of the show. Such a beautiful looking place and one I now want to visit!

I’m glad the people are really nice there, we as well disliked Milan and I’ve heard Paris is a fucking sewer, with arrogant and stuck up people everywhere. Brutal.

It absolutely looks like a place to enjoy at night! I’ll have to put that on my bucket list!

Yep - it is King's Landing. We didn't do a GoT tour, but it would be interesting to do I think.

I have been a couple times to Milan and it is better with locals, some with Paris. I really liked Paris when not at tourists places. With people who spoke French (lived there) it was pretty cool. Shouldn't be that way though.

Dubrovnik is definitely worth the trip.

Pretty much everywhere in Europe you will do fine with English - in many places, the English might be better than ours :D

Aaaand now I want to go to Croatia!

So many words good photos 😉😅

I loved the last one - a small woman showing her strength and tenacity already and I also had a visceral reaction to the view of the water through the hole on the rock, the view of the flowers through the gaps on the rocks, Smallsteps looking through the whole in the rock (there seems to be a theme here !LOL ) & all the ones of the back of your big woman and little woman walking or being together 😍

As we have talked before, Dubrovnik is the most tourist attraction place of Croatia. I love historical wall that surrounds a city nearby a sea.

I like 4th photo!

Yep. It has a lot of tourists here, especially for such a small city. I didn't realize there was only 40K living here :D

This place is as beautiful as paradise
There are times when I wonder how you all get to visit beautiful places.
Before, I used to think they were fake that they don't exist

It is beautiful. One of the things about living in Europe is travel to other European places is quite easy. There are some amazing places on earth. We should do a better job of looking after them.

Oh my!!!!

that looks amazing!!!

living in Australia we a devoid of ancient buildings.... the oldest is like 100 years... we have beautiful ancient forests and landscapes... but not old towns.

I love exploring those sort of places as well.

and like everyone else... last photo the best. My kids however are too scared to watch ANYTHING fun so GOT is certainly off the menu... lol

Enjoy!

I have really liked visiting these kinds of places in Europe, for as you say, there isn't much of this in Australia. I think the oldest building in Adelaide is about 180 year - hard to compare to something built in 700AD.

She hasn't watched GoT, it would freak her out! :D One day...

lol.... its a special kinda scary GOT lol...
so funny. me as a kid watched anything... my kids... scared of disney cartoons... lol
Thats what hit me the most going through Europe i think was the age of the buildings. Stairs that has seen so much traffic over the years they were worn away in the centre.
Thanks for the cool posts.

I think my favorite is Smallsteps on the anchor, followed by her and your wife walking together between the buildings. Of course they are all wonderful memories and will be treasured for many years to come.

I think it's a cultural thing.. Hospitality in Croatia is on another level than in Italy or Paris. Also, I know some people who own a restaurant there (also work in service) and they actually only work in summer and enjoy their earnings for the rest of the year. I guess this also add to their good mood while working 🙂

Have fun and enjoy the time with your family!

Beautiful photos of one of my favourite places in the world.

I was lucky enough to visit here twice before Game of Thrones, first in 1998 and it made a huge impression on me. Gorgeous people, so welcoming and warm and that old town, the stuff of fairytales. I was very young at the time, my brother got married there, and Croatia got to the Semi finals of the world cup and we were there for QF and SF. Amazing memories..

Enjoy the rest of your stay and check out the little bar just outside the wall if it is still there, a gorgeous spot to while away a few hours...

Of course, the last one!!!

To be honest, from the first picture of Smallsteps and your wife until the end, kickass awesome. I love that city. Next time, Airbnb there. I truly understand the problem with posting and trying to download etc... So many times when I am away, I am not able to, especially in a place that is challenged by the internet anyway.

I am so pleased that you like it, what is not to love about it? Your pictures were incredible, I can hardly wait to see more. It is hard when you are taking kids on walking tours, even self toured, and hello? Sometimes I wanted to be alone so I could take pictures without running to catch up. I know, evil. I traveled extensively with three kids (three kids in 4 years, they were close!) But, I would do it all over again. So very worth it.

She got to swim in the Adriatic, those are the things that are bragging rights! You are one of the best dads! It is truly all about the experiences!
