Mid-Lake Sausage

For the first time this year, we did a lake walk and, it was one that we haven't done for quite a few years now. I think the last time we did similar was about five years ago, when Smallsteps was quite small.

It is out to a "kari", wich is just a point where rocks are sticking out of the lake, but it is about 1.5 kilometers from the shore and has a lighthouse on it, so passing boats don't get into trouble. Obviously, walking to it can only be done during the winter when the lake ice is thick enough, and because it is so exposed, it is best to go on a day where there is very little wind - unlike today.

But it was mostly sunny.

Smallsteps looks colder than she actually was.

But in this image, you can see the "attraction" with heading out onto the ice in cold-ass winds.

Sausage!

IMG_20230312_154201.jpg

They have a little, wooden, grill hut that they drag out there when able and grill sausages, as well as have hot coffee, tea and chocolate. We had to wait in a line for about 20 minutes to get ours, but it wasn't too bad. Sometimes it can be quite a bit busier.

P3120040.jpg

Unfortunately, they are apparently no longer allowed to wood-fire the grill, so it was electric, but still, having hot sausage with mustard in the middle of the lake was quite the experience for Smallsteps, as she doesn't remember the last time we were out there and, she wasn't able to eat it then anyway, due her allergies.

P3120012.jpg

We also took our own hot chocolate in a thermos with us, not because we are cheap (we are), but because they seem to like the way I make it, so always ask me to do it. I think my wife just plays dumb on it, so then she always gets free hot chocolate made for her in the winter and when she has to do it for us, she screws it up on purpose.

P3120041.jpg

As you can see in the picture above, they also clear the ice for skaters, and there are heaps of people that do the very long track, stopping in for sausage on the way. There were also, skiers, kite skiers and boarders and plenty of people walking their dogs.

P3120017.jpg

I actually took about 200 photos or more, but I handed the camera to my wife to carry as we were walking back (I was pulling Smallsteps on a sled) and she managed to somehow delete nearly all of them. Once home, there were the last 22 left, and these were the only ones that were worth showing.

Suffice to say, I wasn't happy.

But it happens. So while I had planned on making a decent post of it and show the surroundings more, as well as the inside of the grill and a few desolate shots of my wife pulling Smallsteps along, as if they were in the Antarctic, this will have to be enough this weekend and likely, this winter.

Maybe next year.

P3120032.jpg

All in all, not a bad weekend! Seeing friends, a little dancing, a lame birthday (mine) and a trip onto the ice for sausage and hot chocolate. We even got most of the washing done and the house cleaned after we came home - so I have some clean underwear.

Always a bonus.

I don't want to live for the weekends and holidays, but at the moment, it does feel a bit like that, which also means that I get the sense that I should do more with the weekends we have, but it isn't always easy, especially as there is a sense of obligation to a whole range of people and events. What I would like to set up with a few of my oldest and dearest friends however, is a bi-monthly coffee get together sans the children, just so we can talk about life and love, like we used to do, normally Sundays with a hangover, and "love" tended to be for much shorter timespans. Yet, with everyone feeling the pressures of life, it seems hard to get anything on track, especially after Covid.

I do think we need to make more of an effort though, at least to demonstrate to Smallsteps that we do in fact have some friends and it is normal to see people outside of the family - and they needn't be digital.

How'd your weekend pan out? Sausage?

That is pretty awesome! We have a lot of inland lakes that people go out ice fishing on. They got out on the great lakes too. No sausage shacks but they do build a bit of a shanty city out on the bay. I've never been out to it but heard a lot about it.

You should head out some time. It is actually a lot of fun (when the weather is okay). Also, if you get those one-time use grills, you can make your own sausages and hot chocolate out there.

We do it in the summer and autumn too (not on the lake), as there are lots of lean-tos around on walking tracks, with wood provided and grilling space. They are really popular here.

It is very nice to get out, even if just for a few hours.

We go camping pretty much all summer, so I know what you mean. I've been out ice fishing before, but never on the bay. The bay is crazy. They actually measure distance based on the cracks in the ice. So if someone asks where the fish are biting they might tell you to go out past the third crack. People drive cars out there and everything.

Lols! This is the way it should be.

People drive cars out there and everything.

Yeah, it is a bit of fun driving on the lakes. I haven't done it for a while, but it is common here and up north more, there are a lot of lake "highways" for the locals and for some of the truckers. It can be very thick ice.

Yeah, they usually have to rescue people whenever the ice breaks off a couple of times per year.

Hahaha.... You had a weekend well spent.
I've never been to a lake filled with snow but I would go atleast once in my life by God's Grace.
The pictures are lovely

Wow! You're making the chocolate for the family and hahaha your wife must be so wise on that.

About those deleted photos, oh, how sad. If it is not deleted for sure you can show a lot of pictures about the place.

A grand adventure for Smallsteps! It will be fun after the ice melts in the summer for her to realize she had been walking on that same water!

Smallsteps should've enjoyed the walk as she shouldn't remember the one that happened 5years back.

Mmm, hot chocolate in that cold place.. sounds great.

I suspect it was nicer than a bunnings sausage sizzle, remember those? Hehe

I missed those. I lived in Cairns - no Bunnings! (at least at the time)

Hot chocolate is the best. I have small sachet of chocolate I make every now and then. How does someone not get making hot chocolate right. Well...

Going out and getting to meet people is fun.

Great to seeing you enjoy the weekend. A day or two with family is always the best. I’m not married yet but I have more visions I will go to places with my family. That will be the only way to be happy. We got to enjoy the little we have then will we be happy.

Have a great week ahead✌️

The same here. I don't want to wait for weekend or holiday or even retirement time to do something special for myself. The best times of our life we spend by working and with less money; however, the last times of our life we spend by diseases, low energy, but with saved money. We have a limited time.

I wonder what life would be like, having a better start, with more income to enjoy, less work needed and perhaps, time to make up for it later.

First of all, there would be no economic worry and we would be completely different persons.

March surely has been zooming away, it's the 13th already and Ramadan is coming too. Also, the heat, I can feel it already, summer this year is going to be relentless. Fasting surely won't be a piece of cake this year haha.

So, for now I'm actually utilizing every chance I get to head out, to go and spend time with friends, be a bit more outdoorsy.

I asked J how one accidentally deletes that many photos and he shrugged and said maybe the "delete photo" option was right next to the "next photo" option and she kept pressing delete thinking she was going to the next photo x_x

Least they didn't all get accidentally deleted!

Looks like a nice day out :D

though perpetually too cold for me

Mr. Taraz, how could I'm sorry just looking at the pictures, but the landscape is beautiful, and your wife is a natural beauty and SmallSteps are growing up and are a very beautiful family.

This weekend is very contrary to that cold, here in the Caribbean it is getting very hot and there is the humidity that sometimes exhausts, I think the extremes with the weather have their beauty and limitations haha.

I went out with my husband to enjoy brunch in a very special place on Sunday with piano music, very elegant with strawberry shortcake my favorite included we were celebrating 46 years of when we became engaged in the 70s I made a post about it in Reflections. 🌴🌞

Impressive lake activities, sounds tasty!

I think we all play a little dumb with the things we don't want to do ourselves... and I bet you do make a good hot chocolate.

Spent Friday dancing at the club with friends and Saturday planning a trip for April with malady. Got to move the clocks here in US already so brighter spring days are right around the corner.
