Lucky Number 7

(Edited)

As of right now, Smallsteps is not only officially Seven, but also technically seven, as it was around this time that she was born in the hospital. Maybe being born in the evening is why last night she woke up at 2am when I was going to bed, then didn't sleep until 430am, then after I fell to sleep at 500am, she was up an hour and a half later already, raring to go.

She is ill with a flu.

Lucky.

1000040501.jpg

Not nice for a birthday, but she managed through the day, though her parents are well worn out after such a poor night's sleep and then all the prep in the morning for nearly twenty guests to have coffee and cake. My wife baked a few pies and a chocolate slice, and she also ordered a specialty cake.

1000040508.jpg

A mouse.

1000040507.jpg

Smallsteps has been "playing mouse" for so long, that I suspect she is going to start identifying as one officially and demand a special Olympics for herself, and all the other rodent identifiers.

1000040509.jpg

It was funny last night when I put her to bed though, because I did something silly and said that "this will be the last time I kiss you as a six year old" - and she started crying...

I don't want to get old!

1000040505.jpg

1000040506.jpg

No one does honey. No one does.

Yet, whilst we live, there is no stopping it. Which is why I wanted to start taking a family portrait on her birthday, starting this year. This means that every year that we are able, we will see how the three of us age together.

As you can see, two of us are well-aged, like fine wine.

Or is it whine?

1000040511.jpg

1000040510.jpg

Whichever it is, at least one of us could do with eating a bit less cake. Though today I decided not to worry too much about that and just try to enjoy the day. And, since I can't talk to most of the guests since they don't speak English and my Finnish is very bad, all I had to do was make sure that there was enough coffee and eat. I successfully managed both.

1000040502.jpg

Smallsteps got some good gifts this year, as other than the watch phone (which sounds like something from an old Bond film) we got her, she also got a school desk, some school supplies and a 12x pass to go to a swimming pool, which is great - because that comes with a couple hours of babysitting each time she goes.

And, an awesome Lego kit to build from @galenkp, which will take us quite a while to put together, together. Something for the Lego Community.

1000040512.jpg

As I was saying in another post, having her birthday at this time of year means that needs become presents, which I am well okay with and for now, so is Smallsteps. She likes getting things that she is able to use for some purpose like the desk, and she will enjoy setting up her belongings and school books into their places as I did as a kid. Organizing a room used to be fun.

But, what isn't going to be fun is that tomorrow is my wedding anniversary and I haven't got anything for my wife, so my face looks like the cake after twenty people had a go at the back end.

1000040497.jpg

Perhaps I will make a "free hugs" card.

I was going to organize a date night, but my wife got ill and is still so, and likely I am going to get it eventually too, so I assume we will just raincheck it this year instead. Maybe get some hot wings.

We do have some pie left over also...

How was your weekend?

Aww
I wish her a very happy birthday. She looks happy indeed even with the flu. It is good that you are trying all your best to make her happy and kudos to your wife for baking pies and others...
God bless your home.

My wife did most of the work as normal for these things. I am far less precise, or rather, not precise enough. :)

It's hard to express emotion from a distance through writing, sorry if I sound corny, but the crying gets the best of me. A thousand blessings, little Smallsteps....

Do you find you are becoming more or less sensitive over the last couple years?

Happy Birthday to small steps, and Happy Anniversary to you and your wife.

Jewelry man, Jewelry. Although I see your wife doesn't wear much of that.

So both of them are sick?

Nice shots. I love that one of smallsteps peering over the edge of the box at her mouse cake.

This is a normal go to! But she doesn't wear much. Last year I got her a diamond ring (commemorate the child) to match her wedding and engagement ring. But overall, she doesn't have much and what she often wears, is very, very cheap. Thankfully.

So both of them are sick?

Unfortunately. My wife got ill first, then yesterday Smallsteps - a couple days til me I assume.

I love that one of smallsteps peering over the edge of the box at her mouse cake.

One of my faves too.

Did you have a good weekend?

Oops! I read to the end, I swear, but I neglected to talk about myself!

In fact, I did have a great weekend. I went to my old haunts, Brooklyn NY. My daughter lives there now, in a building I own and once operated a food business in. It felt very much like being home again. I didn't expect that. I hadn't been able to go for years, ever since my son got really sick and I couldn't leave him for long. My daughter had a medical procedure scheduled and asked me to be there. I drove nearly 7 hours, anxious about having to be in a hospital setting again. I've had quite enough of that, as I believe you understand well. Her procedure went better than expected though, so that was a relief.

But the BEST thing about the trip was very unexpected. I'd heard that the neighborhood, Park Slope, was a great neighborhood for dogs. Indeed there are a great many dogs on the sidewalks (and pregnant women, another thing Park Slope is known for), and they are all well-behaved, and friendly on leash. I noted these things, because where I live, dogs are poorly behaved and it's hard to walk my dog on leash because many of the dogs can be aggressive. There's no dog park here, so I have always thought the problem is that the dogs have nowhere to socialize, to sort out what good and bad behaviors are for themselves.

Well, Park Slope borders a gorgeous 526 acre park, Prospect Park. Dogs are allowed off leash in the entire park from 9pm to 1am, then again from 5am to 9am! I took my pooch there, not knowing what to expect, and what we found was dog heaven! Hundreds of dogs in sight, whichever way you look. There may have been thousands in the park at one time. All off leash. I spent nearly four hours there over the weekend and did not see one single altercation between dogs. Not one. They've even got little ponds they can swim in! The people are all happy, friendly, and oddly healthy looking, and the dogs are ecstatically happy! My Hazel has not socialized much (I take her to dog parks everywhere we go, but there is not one anywhere near where we live) and I was worried, but she did great. She could pick and choose which other dogs to hang out with. It was quite amazing to watch her choose. Makes me think humans could make better choices, more personal choices, regarding whose company they want to keep.

Thank you for asking. I got to tell you about my four hours of bliss.

Her procedure went better than expected though, so that was a relief.

That is great news and UI am sure that she appreciates you being there with her. Must be scary and create anxiety for her also.

and pregnant women, another thing Park Slope is known for

:D Why?

The people are all happy, friendly, and oddly healthy looking, and the dogs are ecstatically happy!

Why are they healthy looking - is it that they get out more with their dogs do you think? And it is great to see happy dogs.

Makes me think humans could make better choices, more personal choices, regarding whose company they want to keep.

And I wonder if it is the same for dogs, where the choices they make determine a lot of their behavior.

Here, dogs are allowed off-leash in some circumstances, but in general, the dogs are well behaved. Finns are outdoorsy people and since the dogs have to be inside dogs, they tend to train them relatively well. Most are not an issue, but sometimes people are getting dogs they can't handle.

Why are there so many pregnant women? Park Slope has many schools, both private and public, playgrounds all over the place, a beautiful park, children's shops, pet stores, ice creams shops, after school programs, children's art services... It really is a great place to raise kids. And dogs.

Why are they healthy looking?

Perhaps happiness promotes health. It makes sense to me. But it sure doesn't hurt that so many of them take a walk in a gorgeous park most mornings. I immediately noticed that there is very little obesity in that neighborhood. Nearly everyone looks pleasant and fit.

My daughter has had so many colonoscopies that they are all in a day for her. I was far more nervous about it than she was, especially since the doctor was going to try to stretch a stricture while in there. This was successful and has ameliorated her constant state of nauseous. I myself will never do one again - once was quite enough, thank you. Sadistic I try not to do.

Looks like it was a great day. Too bad she isn't feeling well. It's never fun to go through a holiday when you are sick. The cake turned out really great. Happy anniversary!

She is home from school today and found out that she will miss her math homework.

But I love math!

She will get it later :)

The cake looked great, though the frosting on the outside was more decorative than edible. The actual cake was great though!

Ugh, that stinks. Yes, she will have plenty of math to keep her busy the next decade or so!

Happy Birthday to Smallsteps!!! We both don't want our little girls to grow up :)

And did your wife do like an outfit change during the party? That's your clue to what to get her for the anniversary!

:D :D

She did. The one she wanted to wear (pink) didn't fit (time for some more gym), so we took some photos and then she changed :)

Happy birthday to the little tike! She’s a few weeks older than my son, hope she feels better!

I love the idea of taking a picture each year for her birthday even if we don’t want to lol it’s important and I think my wife will fight me on that but I’ll make sure we do it this year!

I think in a decade or two, you will appreciate having those photos, as will the little guy. Having a few "time passes" shots makes for good memories.

Hot wings on the actual date and anniversary shenanigans when everyone is better.

Happy birthday small XD

Try to keep on top of the family portraits, we tried but kind of kept failing/forgetting with three of them. I have several of the three kids together but precious few family shots.

Couldn't wait.... had hotwings last night :D (Not my choice).

I don't think I would manage to keep up with more than one. This is hard enough!

That cake looked cool.

How was your weekend?

I was waiting for a visit from a classmate but he did not came so the weekend was normal. I did managed to sneak into a gold league so that is nice. Still now I am lucky to reach gold league by the end of the season. In the past I would have reached it much sooner. I would enjoy splinterlands more if I would be better at it.

Also for a while now I thought about buying a mic and adding a commentary to my let's plays. But so far I didn't. I don't like the sound of my voice and I have not spoken english for over a decade. So my commentary might not add any value...

Finally she is officially seven years old, congratulations smallsteps and happy birthday.
She said she doesn't want to grow old, we all don't want to grow old, but growth is inevitable, it is easy to be small and little, not having any responsibility, but as life may have it, it is just for a while.
Congratulations sir for raising this beautiful younger girl, happy birthday once more

A very special weekend, especially for @smallsteps and your anniversary tomorrow.
Every birthday feels fast and goes so fast that sometimes we don't realize that we have been in the umpteenth year.
Smallsteps has been seven years; if you will agree, it feels like just yesterday she was a cute baby, and today is her seventh birthday with a whole bunch of different cuties.
Someday we'll miss every year we've had more, or, to be honest, every year we've had less.
Happy birthday to Smallsteps! May all good things always be with her.

Sounds like a splendid party, sickness aside. The mouse cake is very cute, just like your family portrait. The gift that has always gotten me the most mileage for forgetten milestones is making a hand-drawn coupon book with cute things like foot rub, back massage, breakfast in bed kinda stuff.

My wknd was tremendous, another 3day camping music festival, and fully paid for by the event organizers in exchange for some website and social media coverage of the event. I could really get used to getting free VIP tickets for some media writeups, but I am still on the hunt for some paid writing gigs.
