Island Reflections

After a couple nights away and a really relaxed trip, we are back home from the archipelago. We spent most of yesterday walking around a different island with a small harbour and café on it, and the kids down at the beach there. Then back to grill some good food and then on to watch the football, between sauna shifts. And then the ladies made crepes.

Not a bad day!

After a very relaxing morning breakfast and chilling out, today was more about getting ready to leave the island and get to the ferry by boat. It was a bit of a challenge once we were on the next island in the car, because while we should have been there in good time, my wife navigated to the wrong end of the island and to the wrong ferry - so we had to fly across the island (no police out there) in order to get to the right ferry, and then fly across the next island to ensure we made it onto the main ferry trip, or we would have had to wait another three hours, and we would have missed our friends who were taking their boat to their car, on a completely different island again.

Not the most relaxing ferry journey.

But once we met our friends again by car, we travelled to a group of a craft stores where they were blowing glass and making clay stuff, as well as iron and silver work. We were only there for some coffee together though, before we would part ways and head back to our respective homes - they are our neighbours. But, we went a different way and dropped in for dinner in a different city, giving the dog a walk around and enjoying the last bit of the trip.

Two more hours home.

And here we are, tired, but pretty content with the last few days, and ready for a good sleep in our own beds. The next few days will be warm before the temperature plummets and it starts to pour rain, so we will try to enjoy what we can, while we can. And when I say "we", I mean the girls, because I have to get back to painting the floors.

I had almost forgotten about that....

The cabin is very small, but looks really nice inside! But then again, I am thinking American :) Here one of the people we know called their 360+ square meter home on the waterfront: "little house on the bluff"

Food, watching football and sauna shifts sounds super relaxing, the last day with speeding through the island didn't sound so relaxing :) I cannot wait to go back to the island and finish wiring the sauna finally!

Cabins are small here and should be. They are places for family to be close to each other, hang out and relax. I think Americans always assume bigger is better - but then they have to hire a maid, a babysitter, someone to cut the lawn....

Oh, and yeah - it wasn't an ideal trip to the ferries, but we were in a rush to leave. My friend decided to try and hang a door on a new building about 1.5 hours before we were leaving, and it didn't go well! :D

It sounds like you all had a really nice trip, even though you went to the wrong ferry first. 😄 Which place did you enjoy the most during the trip? I hope the floor painting goes well when you get back to it.

That was the first time the dog actually laid down for a nap during the day - the last day. :D

Beyond your insightful reflections, what truly made my day was seeing Smallsteps with such a bright, genuine smile. There’s a special kind of magic in seeing a child so happy and relaxed during summer. That’s what these trips are all about, right?

Her joy is contagious. It makes me truly happy to see your family thriving and creating these memories together. Blessing.

Yeah, she really liked it there and hanging out with a couple girls a handful of years older meant she felt like a big kid too.

Looks grand! Smallsteps looks like she was having fun for sure. With regard to the last minute rush for the ferry. Think all vacations seem to have that kind of mad rush at some point. Does seem like it is always at the end though.

Was going to ask about when you were going to get back to being a cellar dweller again.:)

I went down last night to have a look at the cellar and there is a patch of it that needs another coat because it is in such bad condition and soaked in the top layer too. Not ideal, but it will be "fine" once done :)

Think I remember you writing about a spot that was in bad shape. May need a few coats. Or it may need some concrete filler. Just depends.

It needs filler, but I am not ready to do that just yet. Too much work and drying time before being able to paint.

Yeah, it does take some time to dry. Filler also soaks up the paint like crazy!

It sounds like a classic road trip ending with a dash of adrenaline navigating 😀

I fully understand about sleeping in your own bed. Even though our travel trailer bed is technically ours, it isn't even close to the same as our bed at home. It was so nice to crawl under those blankets on Tuesday night!

There's always something that goes not as planned on vacation - but those pictures look just stunning. So very Scandinavian, in all the good sense. I hope you enjoy that little vacation in every detail!
