Go Directly To Jail

With such an early start in the morning and with a 2.5 hour drive, we decided to spend the night in a hotel. Well, a hotel now.

It was a jail.

P3010529.jpg

It was in service from 1853 until 2007 and after being a museum for a while that took tours through, it has now been converted into a hotel with a restaurant and little bar. I am not sure if it is exactly cozy, but it is interesting and since many hotels resemble prisons anyway, it seems fit for purpose.

P3010479.jpg

We will only be staying here a few hours really, so after checking-in, we walked around a little and I took some photos. My wife actually did a tour here over a decade ago, not long after it shut down its service as a prison, but she says that thankfully, it has changed a lot. She didn't want to stay here at first, because she didn't like the feel of it when she toured through back then, but now, she is glad we booked it.

P3010489.jpg

P3010516.jpg

They have kept some of the original furniture from the prison and dotted it around the hotel to connect the past. There are also other bits of memorabilia, like shackles and keys to the rooms from different periods of its lifecycle. And of course, the carpet matches the history, with gate markings counting the days.

P3010536.jpg

This particular room was used for people who were newly brought in but were psychotic or, very high on drugs. There was nothing in the room at that time, because it was a place to freak the fuck out a bit.

P3010532.jpg

However, the rooms themselves are nice and comfortable and surprisingly large considering that it is a prison. Granted, it probably wasn't "quite the same" way back when, but I like the touches of freedom that they have added around the place, like the birds on the cupboard. Looking out the window, there is a very high brick wall, but I don't know if anyone ever managed to escape. Though, Finnish prisons these days are more like getaways and for most prisoners, there is weekends off where they can go home to family.

It is kind of like having a job.

P3010468.jpg

P3010464.jpg

P3010470.jpg

And speaking of jobs. I did bring my work laptop and as soon as I started it up in order to write this post, a few "must do" tasks were waiting. Nothing too difficult or that takes long, but I should have skipped. I did them fast and even chatted with a colleague to set up some things for next week and now...

P3010534.jpg

Well, I look fine.

You probably look great.

I think the photos came out quite well of the place and capture a bit of the feel. There are a lot of straight lines here and subdued colors, so I edited to ensure that I corrected the angles I could to give the feeling of structure and organization. I think the bars might come in handy for some other posts in the future too.

Very early start coming and let's see what will be captured tomorrow.

Do you have to pay a lot to stay in the prison hotel? “One of a kind” experience pricing or is it a normal hotel now?

It is normal. Cheaper than most even and I am glad we took it, as the rooms are nice and it is still more interesting than an ordinary place.

If one didn't say it was a hotel, I would call it a jail or a hospital from 1970s 😁

I am sure it wasn't a nice place to stay :)

Looks like a fascinating place to stay. I wonder if any former inmates would spend money to spend the night there!

My wife was wondering the same. I would - nostalgia!!

OMG, when I looked at the cover photo I said to myself What happened to Mr. Taraz? that looks like a prison or war hospital hahaha until I read what it is about.

It is very interesting this hotel that even its concept is minimalist in the images it shows.

I don't know if I would stay in a hotel with these characteristics, to be honest, I think I would think about it a lot.

Thank you for sharing your experience in this space. Smallsteps is very beautiful and she is growing fast.🌺

It was nice to stay and there want a bad feeling at all. I have stayed in more jail-like hotels that weren't ever jails than this!

It is true a few years ago for work reasons I traveled to another city in my country and I stayed for a week in a hotel that made me feel like in a prison the atmosphere was very heavy, and the room did not have good lighting.

Have a great day

What a weird place to spend a day/night. I quite like how they've balanced the history with the present but I don't think I'd like to spend a night in the psych room lol.

It has been done quite well and was a nice stay. The beds were too soft for me... I am not fit for jail obviously :D

Hahaha soft beds are the best, unless they're the type in horror movies that eat you and given the history of the place...I probably would have been worried they would 🤣

But it's really nice, certainly particular and interesting; it must be fun to spend a night there, who knows maybe sooner or later I'll get there!

The photos turned out really well.
I like them very much!

Is the first photo actually a room you can book? Looks very different from the ones near the end.

Can't stay in that particular room, but there is a range here and I think there are some that are available.

The ones at the end are the family rooms.

Wow, the place looks beautiful but it will take courage to spend a night there, knowing fully that the place was once used for a prison, you are brave.

I wonder if they tortured people.

Sure, since they used it as a prison before, many have been tortured and probably died in the process.

It's probably the only type of prison where I wouldn't mind spending a night haha. This place looks dope. 😂

Thug life indeed. And from the way you described it, the Finnish prisons and jailing system seem fairly gracious. I don't know how well it's working, but to let the prisoners have frequent family visits seems nice.

It's quite the opposite of how the rest of the world treats its poisoners.

Interesting place and really well done up.
Did you pass go! Reminded me of the old monolopy game card. Go directly to goal, do not pass go and do not collect $200.

Actually very different and a unique experience. Once you have stayed in a few hotels they are all the same and very few are unique. If I was going to prison then this would do lol.

So in what year do u plan on letting your family out of the clinker?
Meanwhile, I envision that the single @tarazkp will don his Batman outfit & fight the criminal element that lurk in the alleyways.

Though, Finnish prisons these days are more like getaways and for most prisoners, there is weekends off where they can go home to family.

Really? Are they escorted with jail officers?
Here there are types of prisoners classified as preso Caballero. They are allowed to roam around the jail vicinity or allowed to work outside (with pay on contract basis like days) but they are escorted.

Visiting their family? I think only special occasions but that requires a lot of process. Unless influencal

They are not escorted. It is just the way it is here and works very well, as it means that they are able to maintain connection to society. Far better than the systems elsewhere.

Wow! My first time to know that there is treatment with prisoners like that!

I was intrigued, will check more info about that in google.

Have a great day

A prison that converted to a hotel.... I never would have imagined. I imagine a lot of people would stay there just because of the unique experience.

I've seen some people float the idea of turning some of the abandoned shopping malls of the US into hotels. Not quite as unique as turning a prison into a hotel, but still along those same lines of converting something into something completely different that we wouldn't have expected.

Yeah, I think repurposing is far better in many cases than demolition. It also begs the question why so many were built.

I've heard of places like that, funny! I'm not sure, I'd be willing to pay to stay there overnight). But they did make cozy rooms.

It was actually cheaper than a normal hotel in Finland and probably the rooms better quality on average :D

Never heard of prisons turned into hotels but I think it's a good way to give rebirth to such structures that would otherwise become abandoned.

Anyway I once had a big party in a former-church that was desecrated. At the entrance there was a t-shirt: "Jesus is dead. Karl Marx is dead and I too feel not so well". Quite creepy, but the party went fine and we all had been fine

Yep and it is in the middle of the city, so it is good spot to have a hotel too.

Sounds like a fun party!

At least they don't have a chain gang! hahaha This place looks really cool... especially, after those few touches of freedom they added. I love the lines and framing in your shots. The extra effort in editing paid off. Thanks for sharing them here with us in the community!
