Devil's Details

avatar

These photos are from the first wedding I ever shot. I haven't done many all up, four or five I think, plus my own, but the experience was a good one to have, though stressful. What is perhaps interesting about these particular ones is, the bride likely didn't even know I was taking them, as they are all candid snaps of things going on while she was getting prepared or waiting to walk down the aisle.

TKP_Choice (53).jpg

The first one has been cropped to hide her face and the actual shot is much nicer in my opinion. But, I think it serves well for an image for a post called, Devil's Details.

You know,

Purity, original sin and all that...

And, I like that the apple is held upside down.

I have never seen an apple eaten that way by anyone and it feels unnatural to hand an apple to someone that way too. This adds to the image in my opinion, but it was something I didn't realized happened until I looked back at the images later, as I wasn't very close to the subject at this point, as I was shooting with a longer lens.

Candid photography is so much nicer than set shoots for the most part, because it is all about the moment, no setup, no control, just right place at the right time photography. However, for the same reasons, it carries a massive amount of risk, because, what happens if those moments don't happen or, they are missed?

There is no retake, no "do that again" - the opportunity is gone.

Hence the stress.

TKP_Choice (17).jpg

While these photos aren't taken for the bedside table as a testament to the marriage, they are among my favorites. And while the groom didn't care much, the bride was really glad that she has them in her collection, because they are a reminder of all the work that went into the organization, the preparation, the many people involved and the details that most people in attendance will never have seen, but she knew were there, because she put them there with intention.

TKP_Choice (5).jpg

None of this is important to their relationship, but it shows how we can apply meaning to what we do and how we do it, so that we ourselves become more connected. We dive into the details of what we care about and become at least for a short time, an expert on the subject, the one who knows the most about the current situation. It is challenging and stressful, requires decisions and costs and in the moments leading up to the event, it feels like if anything is out of place, if anything goes wrong, the world is caving in.

It isn't true.

But it feels it.

Perhaps this is one interpretation of the Devil in the details.

TKP_Choice (19).jpg

All that attention focused into details that at the end of the day, most people will not notice at the time and even if they do, won't likely remember after the fact. All that concern put into what is fleeting, stress and money, running errands, late nights, broken meetings, wrong materials...

It could send a person insane.

The Devil isn't trying to make things go wrong based on what people forget to check, he is sending them crazy by making them try to remember to check everything. Care about everything. Apply importance to everything equally, even the most useless of details.

TKP_Choice (23).jpg

And, I think that this is also why I am glad that these images exist, as while even the bride will unlikely remember all the details that went into the planning, these shots are the outcomes of the lengths she went to in order to look and feel the best she could on the day. When she looks back at them, she will remember the early morning at the hairdresser, the hunger at having skipped breakfast and lunch as there was no time and the moment she waited nervously to walk down the aisle.

Was it worth it?

That depends on what has happened since this day.

B&W are the best!

There is an ageless style about black and whites.

More power for me. Magical. Those shots really got the power of those moments. And that upside down apple! It's strange that you didn't notice it while you were shooting, because it was the first thing I saw. That, and her smile. I had a notion that the event was a bit of a light moment between those two, the apple was upside down for a reason that only the two of them might remember today.

I wonder if she ever looks back at these - or, if I look back at them more than her! :D

so someone you know well then, not a client or a distant friend. I'm very curious. I don't think you told us who the bride was.

Just a friend. I scour my photos relatively often to look for various things, as my memory seems to remember the image more than the moments.

Has that always been the case, or is that since the stroke? (if I remember correctly....)

I have remembered through the photos always, but after the stroke, it seems to be more important. Every mental image I create has to be done manually now - otherwise there is nothing there. The photos can help me create my mental image for memory.

I love this sentence. Beautifully said.

I think the quote applies as a great title to the first photo with the apple. That is a really strong image. You could build a whole exhibition off that! Bit bummed it isn't my idea in fact :/

I've never thought much about the expression but now you have given me a LOT of food for thought.

Great post! 😊💥

That is a really strong image.

I really liked it, especially since it was a candid moment with a bridesmaid feeding her after a long morning.

Bit bummed it isn't my idea in fact :/

;D

but now you have given me a LOT of food for thought.

Thanks - this is what I generally hope for. We get so caught up in our own patterns, we miss the value of an alternate view.

Exactly what I'm loving this platform endlessly

The ongoing inspiration and creativity

Now I just need more time to make everything

Oh yes. That photo could be interpreted in so many ways. It's a great shot. Truly.

And the one of her bodice being tightened. For the feminists 😉

Looking forward to more art 👍

It's the first time I've seen a bride eating an apple. For us, when we get married, we bring two glasses of milk and dates, the bride and groom eat and drink together.

I haven't heard of that tradition before. Does it mean something?

it's just a delicious light drink on wedding night I like anything white 🥛

They are very beautiful moments, but for me I do not like to keep pictures of the past, even if they are beautiful memories. I probably get attached to it a lot so I try to renovate and find anything new that is nice. You find this normal?

I don't know about normal, but I get the idea. I just wonder if there are regrets later in life at memories lost. Though, this was the way of it though most of our history.

Dear my friend @tarazkp, You seem to have a very strong heart!
The face of the bride with her face hidden is like seeing the most beautiful and hurtful moment in your life!😦

At that moment, you must have dreamed of living with that beautiful bride forever!
However, for now, that beautiful bride remains only in your black and white photo!

where is she now? She left you, do you want to leave her in your memory, perhaps forever?

I was moved by the way you show others the beautiful and heartbreaking memories of your past that you might want to hide!
So,I admire your strong mentality!
Everyone will have such beautiful and heartbreaking memories!

Surely you are stronger than your brothers!👍

Is it custom to make a bride eat an apple held upside down? If so, what is the meaning of it?

There is no retake, no "do that again" - the opportunity is gone.

Yea, that's why half the day goes for wedding photography or couples choose a special date for it.

When hungry :) She hadn't eaten all day. :D

I did the editorial and the portraits, as well as the reception. I worked 7am til 1am :D

The apple is killing me, what unnatural brutes would eat one in such a way!

Great photos tho!

Hahaha.... I did.

I saw @tarazkp post on my feed last night and this morning, I decided buy a few apples and eat them up side down.

The feeling was indeed different.

I bet you a left-hander would eat an apple like that 🤣... I'll have to observe the next time my husband eats one, although it's gonna be a loooooooong wait, as he's not keen on fruit.

I do like candid photography the most, and for weddings, it's images moments like these that I admire the most in wedding photography.🙌
