Groningse Fish Market 🌭 More Than Just Fish

If there's something that I don't like about the colder climate in this region, it's walking in the rain or when the wind's blowing heavy. Last Saturday we made an exception though, because we already made plans with friends of ours and having a laugh with good company makes one endure the bad weather.

So there we were - in the province Groningen - on our way to the shopping center and the Grote Markt (large market) or Vismarkt (fish market) with the grey clouds breaking down above us. We searched for a hiding place from the droplets of rain and found shelter in De Korenbeurs building, that houses a well-known supermarket in the Netherlands. The ceiling in the building was a welcome unplanned surprise.

When the rain "stopped" - it came and went a couple of times - we made our way to the Fish market, that has way more to offer than just fish. It was also clear that Spring is upon us.

For instance, there were bright colored flower stalls at every corner and the clothing stalls sold garments for warmer weather. What stood out though, was the clothing truck vendor that sold what looked to be handmade wool apparel. The merchandise looked comfy and warm.

There was also an abundance of stalls selling locally produced products, like the spice and seasoning section, honey, soap and the sausage vendor. We bought a string of garlic fuet (thin dry-cured sausage of pork in a pork gut), that was soft and well balanced in flavor. The garlic taste wasn't overpowering.

We also gave in to the bratwurst and bought a couple filled with jalapeno and cheese. This treat was warm - great for cold weather - and savory and the cheese was a melting surprise. The jalapeno flavor was mild, so I wouldn't consider this a fiery snack.

And though I'm not really a sweet tooth, we tried our hand at some sweet crackers/cookies (cover picture) and ordered a Caramel Dream. This dessert reminded us of Twix chocolate: wafer/cookie on the inside covered in chocolaty goodness. It wasn't overly sweet, which is why it got my stamp of approval.

In spite of the rain coming and going, we enjoyed the Fish market in Groningen and would definitely go back, especially for the fuet. Does the Fish market in Groningen look like one you would like to visit? Let me know in the comments below 🤓.

Lots of unfamiliar terms here for me. So bratwurst was that big sausage which really looks so yummy!
The garlic fuet looks like longganisa which I also don't know how to explain 😁

It's really spring! Those flowers are pretty!
But still it looks too cold in your area.
Happy #marketfriday!

Happy #marketfriday!

Thank you and hope you've enjoyed the weekend 😊.

It does (I Googled it 😅) look like it and yet different and I suppose that every country has their own variation of "sausages". I will try and look out for the longanisa. Hope I'll find it over here.

But still it looks too cold in your area.

It still is, especially when it's raining. Temperature's here between -1 and 10 degrees Celsius nowadays. I'm looking forward to more sun though.

Oh that’s still cold. Yeah I hope you get more sun there soon, at least it can make the temperature a bit warmer.
The longganisa I guess comes from spanish roots but I’m not so sure. 😊

Fish market and I don’t see a single vis 😂. Looks like a great place to stroll around though. The fashion in that stall looks like the kinda of stuff the hippies wear here, usually made in Thai or India. They are confortable but over the years have gotten pricey here.,

!LOL I had a feeling someone would mention it 🤣. There were some fish stalls but whenever I'm taking pictures we've walked past those stalls already 🙈. It's also usually the ones that are harder to take a photo from without being noticed.

I can imagine, which is why I stayed from a distance and only read the signs from afar.

Where's the fish!!! LOL I just saw the comment down below, so no need to answer, and I thought it was pretty funny. :) To be honest, I would have probably forgotten them with all the delicious food surrounding you!

Would I go to this market? YES!!

What is not to love about it? I really like the building, it has such a commanding presence. I lived in Europe and the weather was challenging on some days, but, it was so incredibly beautiful that the bad weather became incidental. Surrounded by all of that, it became unimportant.

I'll take some sausage! I love it all!!! I put the guidelines at the bottom so that anyone reading your post can see them! :)

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world. Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

1.Go to any type of market, or anywhere where you pay money for a service. It can be a museum, a movie theatre, or an auction. Be creative!
2.Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost? We like to compare prices, otherwise, it is just pictures of a market!
3.Post the pictures! No out-of-focus ones, please! Tell a little bit about the pictures that you post. Having many pictures to scroll through does not make a better post without explanation.
4.Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post #hive-196308 (this is not required, but appreciated) If you don't, then #MarketFriday should be your first tag
5.Following me and reblogging the post so more see it would be appreciated !! Not a rule, just appreciated, more vision for more views on your posts!
