[ENG/ESP] Guarame, a town that preserves the island spirit.

Today I want to take you with me to a very special corner of our Margarita Island: the town of Guárdame, a little gem located in the Antolín del Campo municipality, full of history, tranquility, and natural beauty that you can feel from the very first step you take on its paths.
Guárdame is a town that seems to be embraced by nature. At one end, it connects to the Guacuco area, famous for its beaches and cool breezes, and at the other, it leads to the La Fuente area, an equally charming spot. This dual connection makes Guárdame a transit point, but also a place where many visitors choose to stop and take in the surroundings.

Hoy quiero llevarlos conmigo a un rincón muy especial de nuestra Isla de Margarita; la localidad de Guárdame, un pequeño tesoro ubicado en el municipio Antolín del Campo, lleno de historia, tranquilidad y una belleza natural que se siente desde el primer paso que uno da en sus caminos.
Guárdame es una localidad que parece ser abrazada por la naturaleza. En uno de sus extremos conecta con el sector Guacuco, famoso por sus playas y brisas frescas, y por el otro se abre paso hacia el sector La Fuente, una zona igualmente encantadora. Esta doble conexión hace que Guárdame sea un punto de tránsito, pero también un lugar donde muchos visitantes deciden detenerse para contemplar su entorno.
The town is surrounded by two iconic hills: Matasiete Hill and Guayamurí Hill. Together, they form a sort of natural wall that protects and enhances the landscape. Matasiete, with its history and imposing presence, and Guayamurí, with its distinctive shape, seem to watch over this small town that stretches out at their feet. The combination of these two hills creates a cool, quiet, and deeply harmonious atmosphere.
La localidad está rodeada por dos cerros emblemáticos; el cerro Matasiete y el cerro Guayamurí. Ambos forman una especie de muralla natural que protege y embellece el paisaje. Matasiete, con su historia y su imponente presencia, y Guayamurí, con su forma tan característica, parecen custodiar este pequeño poblado que se extiende a sus pies. La combinación de ambos cerros crea un ambiente fresco, silencioso y profundamente armonioso.
But if there’s one thing that sets Guárdame apart, it’s its traditional architecture. The homes feature a very distinctive style known as Rancho de Chana, a type of construction that combines wood, mud walls, and tile roofs. These are houses with high ceilings, cool even on the hottest days, and offering a comfort that surprises with its simplicity. This style, so characteristic of the island, gives the town an authentic feel, almost as if time had stood still to preserve its essence.
Pero si hay algo que distingue a Guárdame es su arquitectura tradicional. Las viviendas tienen un estilo muy particular conocido como Rancho de Chana, un tipo de construcción que mezcla madera, paredes de barro y techos de tejas. Son casas de puntales altos, frescas incluso en los días más calurosos, y con un confort que sorprende por su sencillez. Este estilo, tan propio de la isla, le da a la localidad un aire auténtico, casi como si el tiempo se hubiera detenido para conservar su esencia.
The locals, who are always friendly and eager to chat, told me a story that has been passed down from generation to generation: the name Guárdame comes from a bird that lived in the hills many years ago and which, according to the story, announced its presence with a distinctive song. That bird, whose name has been lost to time, left its mark on the collective memory and ultimately gave the town its name. It’s beautiful how nature and tradition intertwine to give a place its identity.
Los lugareños, siempre amables y dispuestos a conversar, me contaron una historia que ha pasado de generación en generación; el nombre Guárdame proviene de un ave que habitaba los cerros hace muchos años y que, según cuentan, anunciaba su presencia con un canto particular. Esa ave, cuyo nombre se perdió en el tiempo, dejó su huella en la memoria colectiva y terminó bautizando a la localidad. Es hermoso cómo la naturaleza y la tradición se entrelazan para dar identidad a un lugar.
Like any community, Guárdame has its own sports field—a gathering place for young people and a space where recreational activities take place. It’s a simple place, but full of life, where you can feel the community spirit that characterizes the towns of Margarita.
Como toda comunidad, Guárdame tiene su cancha deportiva, punto de encuentro para los jóvenes y espacio donde se realizan actividades recreativas. Es un lugar sencillo, pero lleno de vida, donde se respira el espíritu comunitario que caracteriza a los pueblos de Margarita.
One of the most striking stretches is the road connecting Guárdame with La Fuente. There, the road narrows and a steep descent begins down the hill. It’s an impressive descent, but it also offers a spectacular view of the landscape that unfolds before you. Amid the curves and lush vegetation, the island reveals its most natural side.
Uno de los tramos más llamativos es la vía que conecta Guárdame con La Fuente. Allí la carretera se vuelve angosta y comienza una bajada pronunciada desde el cerro. Es un descenso que impresiona, pero también regala una vista espectacular del paisaje que se abre frente a uno. Entre curvas y vegetación, la isla muestra su rostro más natural.
I walked the entire length of the Guárdame trail to capture some views and show you this charming, peaceful place. Every corner has a story to tell, every house holds a memory, and every hill seems to silently watch over the daily lives of its residents.
