Today I’m here to tell you about the past few days, during which I wasn’t able to post anything—they were really intense workdays, the kind that leave you exhausted by the end of the day, and we even had to work up to twelve hours straight. The truth is, I didn’t have the time or energy to put together a good post for you, although I always keep you in mind and think about how much I enjoy sharing my experiences with you.
A few days ago, we received an urgent call to clean the underground tanks at the Parque Costa Azul shopping center. There are four tanks in total; the largest has a capacity of two million liters and the smallest, eight hundred liters. I’m telling you this so you can imagine the magnitude of the work ahead of us. It’s neither a simple nor a quick task; it requires organization, physical effort, and a lot of patience.
We’d leave home early, always accompanied by absolutely wonderful weather. These days, the sun on the island has been relentless, shining with an intensity that seems to penetrate everything. But even so, on the way to work, you can enjoy the beautiful urban and natural views that I love so much. I think that, no matter how busy the day may be, it’s always comforting to look at our surroundings through the eyes of the heart and remember that we live in a place full of beauty.

Hoy vengo a contarles cómo fueron estos días en los cuales no pude publicar nada, porque fueron jornadas de trabajo realmente intensas, de esas que te dejan sin fuerzas al final del día y donde incluso tuvimos que trabajar hasta doce horas seguidas. La verdad es que no tuve ni tiempo ni energía para dedicarles una buena publicación, aunque siempre los tengo presentes y pienso en lo mucho que disfruto compartir mis experiencias con ustedes.
Hace unos días recibimos un llamado urgente para limpiar los tanques soterrados del centro comercial Parque Costa Azul. Son cuatro tanques en total; el más grande tiene una capacidad de dos millones de litros y el más pequeño de ochocientos litros. Les menciono esto para que puedan imaginar la magnitud del trabajo que teníamos por delante. No es una tarea sencilla ni rápida; requiere organización, esfuerzo físico y mucha paciencia.
Salíamos temprano de casa, siempre acompañados por un clima más que estupendo. En estos días el sol en la Isla ha estado implacable, brillando con una intensidad que parece atravesarlo todo. Pero, aun así, durante el camino hacia el trabajo se pueden disfrutar hermosas vistas urbanas y naturales que tanto amo. Pienso que, por ocupado que sea el día, siempre es reconfortante mirar el entorno con los ojos del corazón y recordar que vivimos en un lugar lleno de belleza.
When the jobs are large and extensive, the entire team springs into action, including the guys who’ve been with us for a while and know exactly what they have to do. Upon arriving at the shopping center, we began organizing everything so that cleaning the tanks would be as easy as possible.

Al llegar al centro comercial comenzamos a organizar todo para que la limpieza de los tanques fuera lo menos desgastante posible.
I say this because of the heat—even though my husband and I take care of the pumps, supervise the work, and make sure everyone has snacks and stays hydrated, the guys who go down into the underground tank feel twice as much heat because it’s an enclosed space with a surface exposed to the sun.
To cope with the heat, we have an organized system: every hour, they come up to get some fresh air, have a snack, and hydrate, and then they go back down. They take turns so that work doesn’t stop and can proceed steadily.

Para mitigar ese calor, tenemos un sistema organizado; cada hora suben a respirar aire fresco, merendar, hidratarse y luego bajan nuevamente. Se turnan para que el trabajo no se detenga y avance de manera constante.
Cleaning and disinfecting these tanks requires scrubbing the walls with special bristle brushes. Other tanks are cleaned with a pressure washer, but that depends on the structure of each one, since no two are alike. Some are more labor-intensive and complicated than others.
La limpieza y desinfección de estos tanques requiere cepillar las paredes con cepillos de cerdas especiales. Hay otros tanques que se limpian con hidrolavadora, pero eso depende de la estructura de cada uno, porque ninguno es igual. Algunos son más agotadores y complicados que otros.
After brushing, they are pressure-rinsed, and all the water is removed using motor pumps, flushing out the solids and debris that have accumulated over a six-month period. When it’s time to remove that dirty water, we like to have someone from the maintenance department present. This time, it was the man on duty. It’s important to me that they see how much solid matter is removed, so that in the future they’ll be more mindful of the water they put into the tank.

Para mí es importante que vean cuánto sólido se extrae, para que en el futuro estén más pendientes del agua que colocan en el tanque.
Finally, calcium hypochlorite is applied throughout the tank, which is then sealed and left to sit for two hours before being refilled. Every day we finished our work exhausted, but also happy and satisfied with a job well done and knowing that our customers were pleased.
Por último, se aplica hipoclorito de calcio en todo el tanque, se cierra y se deja actuar por dos horas antes de volver a llenarlo. Cada día culminábamos agotados, pero también alegres y satisfechos por el trabajo cumplido y por saber que nuestros clientes quedaron contentos.
