[ENG/ESP] An Unexpected Afternoon Aboard the Training Ship
I wish you all a wonderful Tuesday, filled with peace and happy moments. Here on Margarita Island, this day holds special significance; we celebrate the Virgin of the Valley, patron saint of fishermen and all of us who live near the sea. It’s a holiday, but those of us who work in the hospitality industry know that, even on holidays, the work goes on. Of course, we always proceed with great caution due to the massive pilgrimage to the Valle del Espíritu Santo, which fills the roads every year with devotees and entire families.
Today I want to share with you a deeply moving experience my husband and I had at the end of our workday this past Monday. It was a day that began early, as almost all of them do. We worked at the five-star Wyndham Concorde hotel, where everything went smoothly and without a hitch. Since we finished earlier than usual, we decided to make the most of the rest of the afternoon and head to Valdez Pier, as the Venezuelan Navy’s training ship, the Simón Bolívar, had docked and was open to the public.

Aquí en la Isla de Margarita este día tiene un significado especial; celebramos a la Virgen del Valle, patrona de los pescadores y de todos los que vivimos cerca del mar. Es feriado, pero quienes trabajamos prestando servicios a la hotelería sabemos que, aun en días festivos, la labor continúa. Eso sí, siempre con mucha precaución por la gran peregrinación hacia el Valle del Espíritu Santo, que cada año llena las vías de devotos y familias enteras.
Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una experiencia profundamente emotiva que vivimos mi esposo y yo al finalizar nuestra jornada de trabajo este lunes que recién terminó. Fue un día que comenzó temprano, como casi todos. Realizamos nuestro servicio en el hotel cinco estrellas Wyndham Concorde, donde todo transcurrió con fluidez y sin contratiempos. Al terminar más temprano de lo habitual, decidimos aprovechar el resto de la tarde y dirigirnos al muelle Valdez, pues el buque escuela de la Armada Venezolana, el Simón Bolívar, había atracado y estaba abierto al público.
I didn't get a chance to visit it last year, so this time I didn't want to miss the opportunity. I was impressed from the very first moment. Seeing it up close, so imposing and majestic, left me speechless.
El año pasado no tuve la oportunidad de visitarlo, así que esta vez no quise dejar pasar la ocasión. Desde el primer momento quedé impresionada. Verlo de cerca, tan imponente y majestuoso, me dejó sin palabras.
As we climbed the gangway, we were greeted by a training officer accompanied by several cadets. They were very kind and assigned a young female cadet to guide us throughout the tour. Her enthusiasm was contagious; she spoke about the ship with such genuine pride that each explanation seemed like a little story full of life.
Al subir por sus escalerillas nos recibió un oficial instructor acompañado de varios cadetes. Con mucha amabilidad nos asignaron a una joven cadete para guiarnos durante todo el recorrido. Su entusiasmo era contagioso; hablaba del buque con un orgullo tan genuino que cada explicación parecía una pequeña historia llena de vida.
He showed us the main areas: the masts, which they call the mainmast, foremast, and mizzenmast. My husband, who was thrilled by it all, didn’t miss the chance to take a photo next to the helm, and I have to admit he looked like a sailor ready to set sail.
Nos mostró las áreas principales; los mástiles, que ellos llaman palo mayor, palo trinquete y palo mesana. Mi esposo, encantado con todo, no perdió la oportunidad de tomarse una foto junto al timón, y debo admitir que parecía un marinero listo para zarpar.
Every corner of the ship was spotless; the varnished wood, the gleaming bronze lettering, the sail ties perfectly arranged. It was clear how carefully they tended to every centimeter of that vessel.
Cada rincón del buque estaba impecable; la madera barnizada, las letras en bronce relucientes, los amarres de las velas perfectamente organizados. Era evidente el esmero con el que cuidan cada centímetro de esa embarcación.
We also saw the buckets of sand for emergencies, the old cages that were once used to transport live birds on long journeys, and the kitchen, where we preferred not to stay too long because they were in the middle of preparing food.
También vimos los baldes con arena para emergencias, las antiguas jaulas donde antes trasladaban aves vivas en travesías largas, y la cocina, donde preferimos no permanecer mucho tiempo porque estaban en plena preparación.
I noticed that the lifeboats on one side were red and those on the other were green, and that the lifeboats could hold up to 23 people. Everything was arranged with admirable order: even numbers on one side, odd numbers on the other.
Me llamó la atención que los botes de un lado eran rojos y los del otro verdes, y que las cápsulas de salvamento podían albergar hasta 23 personas. Todo estaba dispuesto con un orden admirable; números pares a un lado, impares al otro.
In one section, they had a display of the ship's anchor and propeller, which were so polished that you could see your reflection in them, just like in a mirror.
En una sección tenían una muestra del ancla y la hélice del barco, tan pulida que podías ver tu reflejo como en un espejo.
They also sold souvenirs to help support the purchase of fruit and fish along their routes. My husband and I wanted to contribute, so we bought a cap and some water. We continued the tour, and I could see the ship’s compass working perfectly, as well as the anchors and the holes through which they slide when dropped into the sea.
También ofrecían souvenirs para apoyar la compra de frutas y pescado durante sus rutas. Mi esposo y yo quisimos colaborar y compramos una gorra y agua. Continuamos el recorrido y pude ver la brújula del buque funcionando a la perfección, las anclas y los orificios por donde se deslizan al caer al mar.
It was a beautiful tour, full of details and explanations. Although I don’t remember all the naval terms, I do clearly recall the excitement with which that young cadet, barely 19 years old, told us about “her ship.” I can’t find the words to describe everything we saw, but what I do know is that it was an unexpected moment that filled our day with joy.
I love planning my work, but I also love those unexpected moments that brighten up the routine. I’ll share them in my next post.

Fue un recorrido hermoso, lleno de detalles y explicaciones. Aunque no recuerdo todos los nombres marinos, sí guardo con claridad la emoción con la que aquella joven cadete, de apenas 19 años, nos habló de “su buque”. Me faltan palabras para describir todo lo que vimos, pero lo que sí sé es que fue un momento inesperado que llenó nuestro día de alegría.
Amo planificar mi trabajo, pero también amo esos imprevistos que embellecen la rutina. Los veré en mi próxima publicación.

Sí, fue un honor inmenso subir a esa embarcación. Desde el primer paso en cubierta se siente que no es solo un buque, sino una verdadera escuela viva, donde cada pieza, cada cuerda y cada historia guarda el espíritu de los navíos de época. Es asombroso todo lo que se aprende allí, y más aún cuando te lo explican con tanto orgullo y dedicación.
