[ENG/ESP] A weekend marked by tensions, solutions, and new tools
The weekend is here, so first of all, I want to wish you all a happy weekend—a well-deserved break after a week that, for many, must have been long and demanding. For us, however, the break will have to wait a little longer. Our family-owned company will continue working nonstop until Monday, because we’re still fully immersed in the Ecoland Hotel’s desalination plant, and that’s exactly what I’d like to tell you about in detail.
Ya llegó el fin de semana, así que antes que nada quiero desearles un feliz descanso, un respiro merecido después de una semana que para muchos habrá sido larga y exigente. Para nosotros, en cambio, el descanso tendrá que esperar un poco más. Nuestra compañía familiar seguirá trabajando sin pausa hasta el lunes, porque aún estamos completamente inmersos en la planta desalinizadora del hotel Ecoland, y justamente sobre eso quiero contarles con calma.
Fortunately, this week we received some news that gave us a new lease on life: the supplies needed to replace the filter media at the plant had finally arrived. That news was a huge relief, both for us and for the hotel, because we were all on edge waiting for those materials, which were essential for us to continue. Of course, the tension didn’t disappear entirely, because there was still a great deal of work ahead of us, but at least we felt that the path was beginning to clear.
Afortunadamente, esta semana recibimos una noticia que nos devolvió el aliento: por fin llegó la mercancía necesaria para realizar el cambio de carga en los filtros de la planta. Ese aviso fue un alivio enorme, tanto para nosotros como para el hotel, porque todos estábamos tensos esperando ese material que era indispensable para continuar. Claro, la tensión no desapareció del todo, porque todavía quedaba muchísimo trabajo por delante, pero al menos sentimos que el camino comenzaba a despejarse.
These past few days we’ve even been working into the early morning hours, trying to make as much progress as possible on replacing the filter media. At first glance, it seemed like a simple, almost routine process, but when we removed the filter covers, we were in for an unpleasant surprise: the old filter media were completely oversaturated and compacted, as if time and pressure had turned them into a single hard mass. That complicated everything and forced us to work longer hours than expected.
En estos días hemos trabajado incluso de madrugada, tratando de avanzar lo más posible con el cambio de cargas. A simple vista parecía un proceso sencillo, casi rutinario, pero al destapar los filtros nos encontramos con una sorpresa nada agradable: las cargas filtrantes viejas estaban completamente sobresaturadas y compactadas, como si el tiempo y la presión las hubieran convertido en una sola masa dura. Eso complicó todo y nos obligó a extender las jornadas más de lo previsto.
In order to move forward without putting our health at risk or wasting valuable time, we had to turn to new tools that would make the work easier and faster. While part of the team remained at the plant, my husband and I went out to find a rotary hammer that would allow us to break up that hardened material. After checking out several places, we arrived at a store on 31 de Julio Avenue called Total Tools Santa Rita C.A. A friend of my husband’s had recommended this place to us, and honestly, it had absolutely everything—from exactly what we needed to things we hadn’t even imagined.
We ended up buying the rotary hammer and several additional tools: a medium-sized hammer, a chisel, gloves, and a hacksaw. Some weren’t urgent, but we decided to get them anyway so we’d be prepared for any unexpected issues. We’ve already learned that for this kind of work, it’s better to have too much than too little, because rushing out at the last minute always complicates everything.
Para poder avanzar sin poner en riesgo nuestra salud ni perder tiempo valioso, tuvimos que recurrir a nuevas herramientas que hicieran el trabajo más humano y más rápido. Mientras parte del equipo seguía en la planta, mi esposo y yo salimos a buscar un rotomartillo que nos permitiera descompactar esa carga endurecida. Después de recorrer varios lugares, llegamos a un local en la avenida 31 de Julio llamado Total Tools Santa Rita C.A.. Ese sitio nos lo había recomendado un amigo de mi esposo, y la verdad es que tenía absolutamente de todo, desde lo que necesitábamos hasta cosas que ni imaginábamos.
Terminamos comprando el rotomartillo y varias herramientas adicionales: una mandarria mediana, un cincel, guantes y una segueta. Algunas no eran urgentes, pero decidimos llevarlas igual para estar preparados ante cualquier imprevisto. Ya hemos aprendido que en este tipo de trabajos es mejor tener de más que de menos, porque salir corriendo a última hora siempre complica todo.
We returned to the hotel, and thanks to the new tools, we were able to quickly unload two of the filters that were scheduled for that day. Then we began the washing and disinfection process, getting everything ready to load the new filters the next day. Between one thing and another, it was already 10 p.m., and we had to call it a night. We’d been getting very little sleep for two days, and loading the filters requires energy, precision, and a clear head.
Regresamos al hotel y, gracias a las nuevas herramientas, en poco tiempo logramos sacar la carga de dos de los filtros que estaban programados para ese día. Luego comenzamos el proceso de lavado y desinfección, dejando todo listo para colocar las nuevas cargas al día siguiente. Entre una cosa y otra, se hicieron las diez de la noche y tuvimos que retirarnos. Llevábamos dos días durmiendo muy pocas horas, y para cargar los filtros se necesita energía, precisión y cabeza clara.
