[ENG/ESP] A Thursday at work with a story that broke through the routine
Happy Friday, dear friends. We’re already approaching the last day of the week, and with it, that little breather that’s so welcome after several days of nonstop work. This week, although I’ve been busy as usual, has had a lighter, more leisurely pace—almost as if the atmosphere itself had allowed me to move forward without such a rush. Sometimes the body and mind need just that—a week that flows smoothly, allowing us to breathe and look around.
I know that a more intense phase will soon begin for me when work starts at the desalination plant. That project will be demanding; it will require more hours, more focus, and more energy. I’m aware that there will be days when I won’t be able to sit down and tell you about my daily routine, because there simply won’t be time to stop and write. But until those days arrive, I want to fully enjoy my weekends and my family—who are my greatest source of strength and the reason why every day, no matter how hard it is, is worth it.
Last Thursday was a light workday—and I say “light” because, unlike other days, we managed to finish relatively early. The main task was to replace a hydropneumatic valve with a pre-control valve, something that seemed simple in theory, but as you know, in the world of maintenance there are always details that slip through the cracks and end up complicating things a bit.
Our first task of the day was to buy everything we needed to do the job. The weather was cloudy at times, with that soft gray hue that doesn’t make you feel sad, but rather feels comforting.
As we went to pick up our friend Luis, we took the opportunity to enjoy the island’s scenery, which has a special charm even on less sunny days.
Feliz viernes, queridos amigos. Ya estamos llegando al último día de la semana y, con él, ese pequeño respiro que tanto se agradece después de varios días de trabajo continuo. Esta semana, aunque he estado ocupada como de costumbre, ha tenido un ritmo más ligero, más pausado, casi como si el propio ambiente me hubiera permitido avanzar sin tanta prisa. A veces el cuerpo y la mente necesitan justamente eso; una semana que fluya sin sobresaltos, que permita respirar y mirar alrededor.
Sé que pronto comenzará para mí una etapa más intensa, cuando arranque el trabajo en la planta desalinizadora. Ese proyecto será exigente, demandará más horas, más concentración y más energía. Estoy consciente de que habrá días en los que no podré sentarme a contarles cómo transcurrió mi rutina, porque simplemente no habrá tiempo para detenerme. Pero mientras esos días no llegan, quiero disfrutar plenamente de mis fines de semana, de mi familia, que es mi motor más fuerte y la razón por la que cada jornada, por dura que sea, vale la pena.
El jueves que recién terminó fue un día de trabajo ligero, y digo ligero porque, a diferencia de otros, logramos terminar relativamente temprano. La tarea principal era cambiar un hidroneumático por un precontrol, algo que en teoría parecía sencillo, pero ya saben que en el mundo del mantenimiento siempre hay detalles que se escapan y terminan complicando un poco las cosas.
La primera misión del día fue comprar todo lo necesario para realizar el trabajo. El clima estaba nublado por momentos, con ese gris suave que no entristece, sino que más bien acompaña.
Mientras íbamos a buscar a nuestro amigo Luis, aprovechábamos para apreciar los paisajes de la isla, que incluso en los días menos soleados tienen un encanto particular.
Luis was already waiting for us, so as soon as we picked him up, we headed out to buy the supplies. My husband, who never misses a chance to crack a joke, had us laughing most of the way, and that always helps start the day off on a positive note.
Luis ya nos estaba esperando, así que apenas lo recogimos continuamos el camino para comprar los materiales. Mi esposo, que nunca pierde la oportunidad de hacer un chiste, nos hizo reír gran parte del trayecto, y eso siempre ayuda a comenzar la jornada con buen ánimo.
We went to the hardware store and bought the pressure regulator, the elbows, the couplings, and the adhesive—everything we needed to get the system working properly.
Llegamos a la ferretería y compramos el precontrol, los codos, las uniones y la pega, todo lo necesario para dejar el sistema funcionando correctamente.
When they arrived at the job site, Luis and my husband got right to work. At first, everything seemed to be going smoothly, but we soon realized that they hadn’t followed some instructions we’d given them earlier, and that slowed the process down a bit. It wasn’t a big deal, but it was enough to force us to improvise, tweaking details and correcting what needed to be fixed.
Al llegar al lugar del trabajo, Luis y mi esposo se pusieron manos a la obra de inmediato. After working hard for a while and dealing with the intense heat in the room—because, yes, it was pretty intense—we finally managed to finish the job. Feeling that sense of relief when you finish a task, especially in such a hot environment, is almost like opening a window and letting in some fresh air.
Después de un rato de esfuerzo y de lidiar con el calor intenso del local —porque sí, estaba bastante fuerte— finalmente logramos terminar el trabajo. Sentir ese alivio al finalizar una tarea, especialmente en un ambiente tan caluroso, es casi como abrir una ventana y dejar que entre aire fresco.
Once everything was ready, we left. We dropped Luis off at his house and continued on our way home, with that quiet sense of satisfaction that comes from simple but productive days. It wasn’t an extraordinary day, but it did have its own story, its own rhythm, and its little moments worth remembering.
