[ENG/ESP] A special day, celebrating life with those we love most
I hope you all have a wonderful day, filled with peace and good times. Today I’ll have a quiet workday—one of those days when we carry out our chlorination and disinfection routines at one of the hotels in the chain. But before I get started, I want to share with you how my husband’s birthday went: a simple, family-oriented day full of those little touches that make life special.
The morning started early, as it almost always does. We had to submit a quote at the Parque Costa Azul Shopping Center, so we headed there before the sun was too high in the sky. Once that first task was done, we decided to head to the fish market located in the Punda neighborhood, between Mérito Street and Doña Street, in the city of Porlamar. The reason was special; my husband had been craving a salad with fresh tuna for days, and what better day to treat him than his birthday.

Hoy tendré una jornada de trabajo tranquila, de esas en las que realizamos nuestras rutinas de cloración y desinfección en uno de los hoteles de la cadena. Pero antes de comenzar, quiero compartirles cómo transcurrió el cumpleaños de mi esposo, un día sencillo, familiar y lleno de esos detalles que hacen que la vida tenga sabor.
La mañana comenzó temprano, como casi siempre. Teníamos que entregar un presupuesto en el Centro Comercial Parque Costa Azul, así que arrancamos hacia allá antes de que el sol estuviera muy alto. Cumplida esa primera tarea, decidimos dirigirnos al mercado del pescado ubicado en el sector Punda, entre la calle Mérito y la calle Doña, en la ciudad de Porlamar. La razón era especial; mi esposo llevaba días antojándose de una ensalada con atún fresco, y qué mejor día para complacerlo que su cumpleaños.
When we arrived, we realized it was still early. The fishing trucks were parked there, waiting for the boats to return with the day’s catch. That unexpected break gave us a moment to gaze out at the sea, something we both love deeply. The rolling of the waves, the smell of salt, watching the fishermen get ready… all of that always fills our souls.
Al llegar, nos dimos cuenta de que todavía era temprano. Los camiones cavas estaban estacionados, esperando que los botes regresaran con la pesca del día. Esa pausa inesperada nos regaló un momento para mirar el mar, algo que ambos amamos profundamente. El vaivén de las olas, el olor a salitre, el ver a los pescadores preparando sus cosas… todo eso siempre nos llena el alma.
When the fish finally arrived, we bought a nice piece of fresh tuna and headed back home. That’s where the real work would begin. I had a lot to do, and to make matters worse, my son’s friend couldn’t come to help because she had the flu. So it was up to me to take care of everything, but I was happy to do it because it was a special day.
Cuando por fin llegó el pescado, compramos un buen trozo de atún fresco y emprendimos el camino de regreso a casa. Allí comenzaría la verdadera faena. Tenía muchas cosas por hacer y, para completar, la amiga de mi hijo no podía venir a ayudar porque estaba con gripe. Así que me tocaba a mí encargarme de todo, pero lo hacía con gusto porque era un día especial.
I made his favorite meal: tuna salad with pasta, corn, and that homemade touch that always turns out great. I also cooked a traditional dish he loves, because a birthday without good food isn’t really a birthday. And of course, we couldn’t miss out on a little cake to sing to him, blow out the candle, and make a wish. No matter how old we are, that little ritual always brings a smile.
After lunch and singing “Happy Birthday,” the three of us went to bed to watch a movie. We snuggled up close together, like a marshmallow, enjoying the quiet of the afternoon. My husband was happy, and so was I, because we both love spending time together, without any complications, just sharing.

También cociné un plato típico que a él le encanta, porque un cumpleaños sin comida rica no es cumpleaños. Y por supuesto, no podía faltar una tortita para cantarle, soplar la vela y pedir su deseo. No importa la edad que tengamos, ese pequeño ritual siempre hace sonreír.
Después de almorzar y cantar cumpleaños, nos fuimos los tres a la cama a ver una película. Nos acomodamos juntitos, como una melcocha, disfrutando de la tranquilidad de la tarde. Mi esposo estaba feliz, y yo también, porque a ambos nos encanta pasar tiempo juntos, sin complicaciones, solo compartiendo.
That’s how his day went: eating what he likes, surrounded by those of us who love him, and enjoying those simple moments that end up being the most precious. Sometimes you don’t need a big celebration to feel your heart full; it’s enough just to be together, laugh, and talk.
These are the moments I treasure most, the ones that stay etched in my memory. And that’s why I like to share them with you, because every day brings a little piece of history that deserves to be told.
