[ENG/ESP] A Friday filled with work, scenery, and island traditions.
Happy Friday! I hope you all have a great day full of positive energy. Big hugs to those of you who’ve been eagerly awaiting this day, because your well-deserved break is finally here. As for me, I’ll be working through Saturday this week, so my break will have to wait a little longer, but I’m still looking forward to it just as much.
My day started as usual—very early, making the most of every minute of the morning before the sun takes over with that stifling heat that’s already part of our routine on the island. Staying hydrated is still key, because the weather shows no mercy, and you have to take care of yourself to perform well throughout the day.
Feliz viernes, les deseo un día genial y lleno de buenas energías. Muchos abrazos para quienes han estado esperando este día con ansias, porque por fin comienza su descanso merecido. En mi caso, esta semana trabajaré hasta el sábado, así que mi pausa tendrá que esperar un poquito más, pero igual la espero con la misma ilusión.
Mi día comenzó como de costumbre; bien temprano, aprovechando cada minuto de la mañana antes de que el sol se imponga con ese calor sofocante que ya es parte de nuestra rutina en la Isla. La hidratación sigue siendo clave, porque el clima no da tregua y uno tiene que cuidarse para rendir bien en la jornada.
This Friday, we had to head to the municipality of Gómez, where we manage the Sunsol Ecoland hotel. To get there, we took the Portachuelo road, since Simplicio Rodríguez Avenue—which is my favorite because of its view of the coast—is still very busy with vacationers who are still enjoying their time off. Although Portachuelo doesn’t have the coastal charm of Simplicio Rodríguez, it still offers beautiful urban scenery, especially when we pass through Santana and the picturesque Tacarigua—two places that always give me a sense of peace.
Este viernes nos tocaba dirigirnos al municipio Gómez, donde atendemos el hotel Sunsol Ecoland. Para llegar, tomamos la vía Portachuelo, ya que la avenida Simplicio Rodríguez —que es mi favorita por su vista al litoral— continúa muy transitada por los temporadistas que aún disfrutan de sus vacaciones. Aunque Portachuelo no tiene el encanto costero de Simplicio Rodríguez, igual me regala paisajes urbanos hermosos, especialmente cuando pasamos por Santana y la pintoresca Tacarigua, dos lugares que siempre me transmiten tranquilidad.
We know we’re close to the hotel when La Playa Lagoon comes into view—always so beautiful, so serene, so full of life. It’s a landscape I deeply enjoy, and every time I see it, I feel like the day gets just a little bit better. When we arrived at the hotel, as always, the charismatic Carel was waiting for us to accompany us up to the tank and carry out the usual chlorination routine.
Sabemos que estamos cerca del hotel cuando aparece ante nosotros la laguna La Playa, siempre tan hermosa, tan serena, tan llena de vida. Es un paisaje que disfruto profundamente, y cada vez que la veo siento que el día mejora un poquito más. Al llegar al hotel, como siempre, nos esperaba la carismática Carel para acompañarnos en la subida al tanque y realizar la rutina habitual de clorado.
After checking the settings and making sure everything was in order, I took the opportunity to snap a few photos of the surroundings. From that vantage point, the scenery is extraordinary—the lagoon, the mountains, the clear sky… it all comes together in a natural postcard scene that I never tire of admiring. With the work done and the satisfaction of a job well done, we left the hotel.
Después de comprobar los parámetros y asegurarnos de que todo estuviera en orden, aproveché para tomar algunas fotos del entorno. Desde ese punto elevado, el paisaje se vuelve extraordinario; la laguna, las montañas, el cielo despejado… todo se combina en una postal natural que nunca me canso de admirar. Con el trabajo realizado y la satisfacción del deber cumplido, nos retiramos del hotel.
As we were leaving, we saw several people walking by carrying buckets full of sardines. That could only mean one thing: the boats were arriving at the canal to unload their catch of the day. So we headed over to the entrance of the lagoon to check out the activity. The fishermen were unloading the sardines onto dump trucks, and as is tradition, they were giving away a few buckets to the locals.
Al salir, vimos a varias personas pasar con tobos llenos de sardinas. Eso solo significa una cosa: los botes estaban llegando al canal para descargar su pesca del día. Así que nos acercamos a la entrada de la laguna para ver el movimiento. Los pescadores descargaban las sardinas en los camiones cava, y como es tradición, regalaban algunos baldes a los lugareños.
This time I couldn’t bring anything because I’d left my bucket behind—the one I almost always bring when I come to Pedro González, since you never know when you’re going to come across such a beautiful scene.
Even so, I stayed to enjoy the moment: the boats lined up, the calm canal, the birds that find refuge there, and that authentic atmosphere that only fishing villages can offer. If the lagoon is beautiful, the canal that feeds it is even more so, with its blend of nature, work, and tradition.
Esta vez no pude llevar nada porque se me quedó mi balde, que casi siempre cargo cuando vengo a Pedro González, ya que uno nunca sabe cuándo se va a encontrar con este hermoso panorama.
Aun así, me quedé disfrutando del momento; los botes alineados, el canal tranquilo, las aves que encuentran refugio allí, y ese ambiente tan auténtico que solo los pueblos pesqueros pueden ofrecer. Si la laguna es hermosa, el canal que la alimenta lo es aún más, con su mezcla de naturaleza, trabajo y tradición.
After enjoying these very special moments, we continued our journey home with a sense of accomplishment and our hearts full of joy at having been able to appreciate, once again, the landscapes that make this island such a unique place.
