Walk from the beach to a 400 years old tree

Soooo, today I'm sharing my memories from June 11, 2024. I went for a walk in the morning.
I walked across the beach to the main street, where I stopped briefly at 7eleven to get an iced espresso and something to snack on.

Once I'd finished and got out, I turned right around the corner and walked straight ahead with music in my ears. This path is rather quiet, you also walk past a temple and straight towards the oldest tree on the island.

There are some very old trees here on Koh Phangan. How trees, you're probably wondering now, aren't you? Yes, funnily enough, I was told in a brief conversation that there is supposed to be such a 400-year-old tree here. I just thought it was interesting, so it was worth the walk there and I also think it's worth writing about it.

So, this old tree is called the "Yang Na Yai tree" and is very graceful and majestic. Some people even call it a natural wonder, I don't know if I would call it that, but this old giant is certainly beautiful to look at. What makes Yang Na Yai so special? Well, obviously this huge tree, sometimes called the "king of trees", stands out due to its enormous size and age. It is estimated to be over 400 years old.

Gosh, what centuries of history and changes the Yang Na Yai tree has witnessed on the island? When you think about it, it's quite remarkable. Imagine if we all lived to be 400 years old on average? Would we then be more advanced as a collective, as humanity? Spiritually, technologically and humanly? Well, I'm digressing from the topic. Back to the tree...The Yang Na Yai tree belongs to the winged fruit family or Dipterocarpaceae according to Dr. Google (I had to research it briefly, I don't just know that) and is notorious for its above-average size and broad canopy. Well, the tree is here by the roadside. Anyone who thinks there is an extra park dedicated to this Risen is mistaken. Just take a stroll here on Koh Phangan and you too will see this beauty. Because it is definitely beautiful. What I noticed is that lots of bee colonies have their hives (is that the plural?) there in the treetops. High up, above the heads of the people here.

So you could assume that the old tree has some kind of ecological significance, as it provides a habitat that is home to various animal species. It is also culturally important for the local community, which treats it with respect.

But otherwise this tree seems rather inconspicuous and if you are not interested in such things, you will hardly notice it. Some people even overlook it. Which is funny considering its size.

Spaziergang vom Strand zu einem 400 Jahre alten Baum

Soooo, heute teile ich meine Erinnerungen vom 11. Juni 2024. Ich machte einen Spaziergang am Vormittag.
Über den Strand lief ich zur Hauptstraße, wo ich bei 7eleven kurz anhielt und mir einen Iced Espresso und was zum snacken holte.

Dort fertig und wieder raus bog ich rechts um die Ecke und spazierte immer geradeaus mit Musik aif den Ohren. Dieser Weg ist eher ruhig, man läuft auch an einem Tempel vorbei und Schnurstracks auf den ältesten Baum der Insel zu.

Hier auf Koh Phangan gibt es mitunter sehr alte Bäume. Wie Bäume, fragt ihr euch nun sicher jetzt oder? Ja, lustigerweise hat man mir in einem kurzen Gespräch erzählt, dass es hier so einen 400 Jahre alten Baum geben soll. Fand ich halt interessant, deshalb war es mir den Spaziergang dorthin wert und ebenfalls darüber zu schreiben finde ich lohnenswert.

Also, dieser alte Baum nennt sich "Yang Na Yai Baum" und ist sehr anmutig und majestätisch. Manch einer Nennt ihn sogar ein Naturwunder, ich weiß nicht ob ich ihn so betiteln würde, doch schön anzusehen ist dieser alte Riese allemal. Was macht Yang Na Yai so besonders? Na, offensichtlich sticht dieser riesige Baum, manchmal auch als "König der Bäume" betitelt, durch seine enorme Größe und sein Alter hervor. Man schätzt ihn auf über 400 Jahre.

Mensch, was der Yang Na Yai Baum wohl alles an Jahrhunderte der Geschichte und Veränderungen auf der Insel miterlebt hat? Wenn man mal so darüber nachdenkt schon beachtlich. Stellt euch mal vor wir würden alle durchschnittlich 400 Jahre alt werden? Ob wir als Kollektiv, als Menschheit dann fortgeschrittener wären? Sowohl spirituell, technologisch als auch menschlich? Nun ja, ich schweife vom Thema ab. Zurück zum Baum...Der Yang Na Yai Baum gehört laut Dr. Google (hatte es mal kurz recherchieren müssen, sowas weiß ich nicht einfach so) zu den Flügelfruchtgewächse oder auch Dipterocarpaceae genannt unter den Profis und ist berüchtigt für seine überdurchschnittliche Größe und seine breitere Baumkrone. Nun, der Baum steht hier am Straßenrand. Wer denkt diesem Risen ist ein extra Park gewidmet irrt. Einfach mal ein bisschen hier auf Koh Phangan spazieren und schwubs seht auch ihr diese Schönheit. Denn schön ist er allemal. Was mir aufgefallen ist, dass richtig viele Bienenvölker ihre Bienenstöcke (ist das der Plural?) dort in seiner Baumkrone haben. Weit oben, über den Köpfen der Menschen hier.

Somit könnte man davon ausgehen das der alte Baum eine Art ökologische Bedeutung hat, da er den Lebensraum bietet, welcher für verschiedene Tierarten eine Heimat darstellt. Auch kulturell ist er für die lokale Community wichtig, welche ihm mit Respekt begegnet.

Doch sonst scheint dieser Baum eher unscheinbar und wenn man sich nicht für sowas interessiert, wird er eher kaum Beachtung finden. Manch einer übersieht ihn auch schonmal. Was lustig bei seiner Größe ist.

This is roughly where I started, so to speak. Walked along the beach first. I don't leak my exact address, but I like to start at a super nice beach which is nearby. So also in Ban Tai on Koh Phangan (Thailand).

Hier mein sozusagener Startpunkt in etwa. Am Strand erstmal entlang gegangen. Ich leake nicht meine genaue Adresse, doch gerne einen super schönen Strand, welcher in der Nähe ist und von welchem ich loslief. Also auch in Ban Tai auf Koh Phangan (Thailand).

But not for long. I enjoyed the view of the sea and then wanted to get a coffee at 7eleven first.

Aber nicht lang. Ich genoss den Ausblick auf das Meer und wollte dann doch erst einmal einen Kaffee bei 7eleven holen.

Erstmal vom Strand weg und hochlaufen, um auf die Straße zu gelangen.

Done, fought through the sand onto the road. Now off to the supermarket through the sun and what felt like 40 degrees Celsius (in reality around 32 degrees Celsius).

Geschafft, durch den Sand auf die Straße gekämpft. Nun ab durch die Sonne und gefühlten 40 Grad Celsius (in Wahrheit circa 32 Grad Celsius) schnell mal zum Supermarkt gegangen.

Just walk along the road and you're there.

Nur die Straße entlang und schon ist man da.

Now off inside, it's also nice and cool at 7eleven.

Nun ab rein, ist auch schön kühl bei 7eleven.

Here is a small insight into the assortment in the front area / entrance area. Normally you're not supposed to take photos in the store, there's even a sign saying so... I took these secretly. 😇🤫

Hier ein kleiner Einblick in das Sortiment im vorderen Bereich/ Eingangsbereich. Normalerweise soll man hier keine fotos im Laden machen, hier hängt sogar so ein Schild diesbezüglich... Ich habe diese mal heimlich gemacht. 😇🤫

But now I walked on. After all, I wanted to see this ancient tree.

Nun aber weiter gelaufen. Immerhin wollte ich diesen uralten Baum mal sehen.

A pleasantly quiet way to go for a walk.

Ein kleiner Altar war auch noch am Baum und nebenan konnte man weiterlaufen zum schießen... Ich hoffe meine Impressionen haben euch gefallen.
