What's Niqaah? - Sheniza Photoshoot before her Niqaah...

Sheniza - Hi friends,
I just have today to have a editing day. From tomorrow on the wedding season starts in Suriname. That's nice for the people who will party, but for me it's the most tiring month of the year.

This weekend I have two wedding shoots from tomorrow till sunday. I'm just thinking how i'll manage with my sleep.

Still today I found these nice pictures of Sheniza, moments before her Niqaah.

NIQAAH - The wedding of muslims is called Niqaah. The groom comes at the house of the bride with his family. He gets a warm welcome from the brides family.

After that they read out some holy texts from the Quran and he's asked if he wants to marry the girl. That is also done with the bride and she may ask the groom anything to make the wedding happen. Usually that's money, but I had some weddings where she asked for car, house and other things.

When the groom accepts this then the niqaah is done by telling each other three times if they accept each other as their husband/wife.

I hope to continue telling you more about my work as photo- and videographer. Hope you like my article.

With love,

I know almost nothing about Muslim weddings, so this is surprising to me, but I'm glad you shared this information as I'm learning. So what happens if the groom can't give them what they ask for? Is there a previous agreement on what they are going to ask for?

Hi @erikah, If the groom can't give what they ask for the Imam (leader of the wedding ceremonie) asks if the bride wants to give him some time to arrange everything. For example Maybe he needs a year or so then the wedding is proceeded on that condition. But if the groom declines at that moment then the wedding is cancelled.

But now with love marriages they already make each other known what they are going to ask. So these days you don't meet such difficult asks anymore.

So let's say a wedding is cancelled because the groom can't give the bride what she asks for. Will that reflect poorly on the groom in the future? I mean I know small communities are gossiping and word is spreading fast. Or on the bride for example, for asking for too much?

No it wont't affect his or the bride future. Atleast in our country it doesn't have that effect.
