Feathered Friends - Smap Round #112 - Sparrows by Sunscape

feathered-friends-sparrows.jpg

One of the male sparrows is busy gathering some cat hair for the nest. We save our cat's fur all winter long from her daily brushing. In the spring when all the sparrows claim the birdhouses, we begin to put out little clumps on our Hemlock tree.

It only takes a few minutes and the birds compete for the fur. This has become a seasonal ritual each time they spruce up their nests for a new batch of babies. They watch as we put the fur on the branches and swoop in to claim their portion.

This week we put out our first round of cat fur and they have already cleaned off the tree. Soon the females will lay their eggs and we will get to enjoy watching them feed the babies.

That's is nice, giving them fluff to make the nests cosy.
Great shot of the sparrow. 🙂

Thanks, Neli. The birds love the cat hair.

That's funny, cat hair lining a bird nest... But I expect it makes a really nice nest for the babies.

I know right? The birds love the cat hair and gather it as fast as I put it out. lol

The sparrows love cat fur, my son places out into the garden after brushing his cat through it doesn't lay for too long. Lovely photography with snow still evident, they will need some warmth for the nest.

That is awesome, I am so glad to hear that someone else uses cat hair for their birds too. I have to put more out today as they are really building the nests and I see a lot of mating going on. lol

I have never seen the birds remove to the nest, fur is gone when next I look so obviously they do collect.
