Hello to all the members of this community and cosplay lovers! Something I've always liked to do is look for customs similar to characters or cosplays I'd be interested in making. This helps me see if I can use something from my wardrobe when making a full cosplay. But I also like to simply dress up as that character for a moment and feel like it would be a waste to do something more elaborate. Today, I'll show you a little photoshoot I did based on the character Opal, from the short film of the same name made by musician Jack Stauber for Adult Swim.

I was fascinated by his projects. His music is not only unique, with extravagant and unexpected sounds, reminiscent of a commercial jingle, but also with lyrics that often tell stories about bizarre characters.

But without a doubt, one of the draws of Jack's songs is his music videos, as he often creates creepy animations, using 2D or stop motion techniques. And it's precisely stop motion that has filled Jack's repertoire with videos that have left more than a few traumatized, with the lyrics speaking to us through metaphors and analogies, leaving the viewer's mind filled with doubts in a music video that lasts just a few seconds.

But, returning to the topic of Opal, the short film is a musical story that tells the story of a little girl who loves hamburgers and becomes curious about the house across the street. Her parents tell her she doesn't need to know what's in that house, since she has everything she needs there and doesn't need anything else. But like any little girl, little Opal can't stay still without knowing what that light and those sounds coming from the house next door are.

Jack offers us a raw perspective in this story, whose interpretation is left open to the viewer, allowing them to interpret what Opal finds. I've come away with a fan theory, which I think is the most accurate for this short and what most makes me believe it's a work worth appreciating. Jack's stop-motion style is beautiful because it has that "antique" feel, which makes you think this is a project that's many years old, even though it's barely five years old since its creation. I read that to achieve this effect, Jack often converts his videos to VHS format and then digitizes them again. The disturbing aspect fits perfectly with its messages. Obviously, one of the reasons I like Opal is that, as I mentioned, it's a musical short film, featuring catchy and intriguing songs.

As you can see, this isn't an impressive cosplay, but I've never cosplayed with the idea of ​​​​impressing others. I like to represent my favorite characters, and that's why I decided to do this Opal photoshoot because I really love that short film. I just needed to wear a blonde wig, a long-sleeved shirt similar in color to the character, blue jeans, and I made a small hamburger especially for the session 😆 To edit the photos, I used Photoshop. However, I didn't just take photos; I recorded a short video inspired by the beginning of the short film. Here it is in case you want to see it:

¡Hola a todos los integrantes de esta comunidad y amantes del cosplay! Algo que siempre me ha gustado hacer es buscar customs parecidos a personajes o cosplays que me interesaría hacer, eso me ayuda a ver si puedo utilizar algo de mi guardarropa a la hora de hacer un cosplay completo. Pero también, me gusta simplemente vestirme como ese personaje un momento y siento que sería un desperdicio hacer algo más elaborado. El día de hoy, les mostraré una pequeña sesión de fotografías que hice basándome en el personaje Opal, del cortometraje del mismo nombre realizado por el músico Jack Stauber para Adult Swim.

Soy fan de la música de Jack, lo conocí durante la pandemia y quedé fascinada con sus proyectos. Su música no sólo es única, con sonidos extravagantes e inesperados, propios de un "jingle" de un anuncio publicitario, con letras que en muchas ocasiones que cuentan historias sobre personajes bizarros.

Pero sin duda, uno de los atractivos de las canciones de Jack, son sus videos musicales, ya que suele hacer animaciones creeppies, en donde utiliza la técnica del 2D o el stop motion. Y es precisamente el stop motion lo que ha llenado el repertorio de canciones de Jack de videos que han dejado traumados a más que uno, siendo que las letras nos hablan a través de metáforas y analogías, haciendo que la mente del espectador se llene de dudas con un video musical de apenas unos segundos.

Pero, volviendo al tema de Opal, el cortometraje se trata de una historia musical en donde se narra la experiencia de una pequeña niña que adora las hamburguesas y que acaba sintiendo curiosidad por la casa de enfrente. Sus padres, le dicen que no es necesario que sepa lo que hay en esa casa, ya que tiene todo lo que necesita allí y no necesita nada más. Pero como toda niña, la pequeña Opal no puede quedarse quieta sin saber qué es esa luz y esos sonidos que surgen en la casa vecina.

Jack nos ofrece una perspectiva cruda en éste relato, cuya interpretación se deja al aire, para que sea el propio espectador el que interprete qué es lo que encuentra Opal. Me he quedado con una teoría hecha por un fan, que pienso es la más acertada a éste corto y es lo que más me hace pensar que es una obra que merece ser apreciada. El estilo del stop motion de Jack es hermoso, porque se ve con ese estilo "antiguo", que te hace pensar que se trata de un proyecto que tiene muchísimos años, cuando apenas va para los cinco desde su creación. Leí que para obtener ese efecto, Jack suele convertir sus videos a formato VHS y posteriormente, vuelve a digitalizarlos. El aspecto perturbador queda perfecto con sus mensajes. Obviamente, uno de los motivos de que me guste Opal, es que, como comenté, se trata de un cortometraje musical, contando con canciones pegajosas e intrigantes.

Como pueden ver, no se trata de un cosplay impresionante, pero nunca he hecho cosplay con la idea de impresionar, me gusta representar a mis personajes favoritos y por eso, me animé a hacer esta sesión de fotografías de Opal, porque realmente adoro ese cortometraje. Sólo bastó con usar una peluca rubia, una camisa manga larga del color parecido al del personaje, un pantalón de blue jeans y preparé una pequeña hamburguesa especialmente para la sesión 😆 Para la edición de las fotografías, utilice Photoshop. Sin embargo, no sólo me conformé con tomarme fotografías, grabé un pequeño video inspirado en el inicio del cortometraje, aquí se los dejo por si desean verlo:
