Bulb planting on the balcony

Good day ,

Today we went to a garden center / nursery to buy some bulbs and planting containers so that i will have some macro models in the beginning of 2026 .

I did something similar back in 2022 as you can see here : https://ecency.com/hive-140635/@stresskiller/planting-macro-models-for-2023

But that was when we still had a garden , nowadays we only have a balcony , so you need to be creative with space.

The balcony is south facing so there is always some sunlight during the day, but during the wintertime the sun is lower on the horizon and mostly hidden behind our neighbours roof , so there will be dayklight but not so much direct sunlight.

And with that info i went shopping for bulbs .

1 ) My first pick was these little anemones , i had them before in my old garden and they flower very early atracting bees and spiders .
they will flower from March till April .

1a ) old photo from my old garden with this flower and a crab spider eating a bee .

2 ) my 2nd pick was this Fritillaria , never had the before and i think they vcan look great in black and white photography , and they start to flower when the anemone is done in April until May .

3 ) My 3rd pick where these assorted crocus, i have had those in several gardens during my life , and they also attrack early bees for macro photos .
And they flower early starting Februari till March.

3a ) or just with raindrops ( also an older photo created by me )

4 ) And the last pick tiny daffodils that will flower from March till April .

5 ) the containers i bought are made from recycled plastic , they are mounted on an iron construct that is had secured with tyraps to the balcone railing just to be sure .

6 ) the big ones mounted side by side on the long side of the balcony .

7 ) and two smaller containers for the sides .

8 ) the big ones have a water reservoir underneath them and an overflow so that the bulbs won't rot when there is heavy rain .

9 )And to fill those containers we also bought 40 liter ( 10 gallon ) of potting soil .

10 )starting with the big containers to put in some potting soil

11 )Once that was done it was time to start with big bulbs , Tête-à-tête are the biggest bulbs i have today so spreading them across the two large containers .

12 ) while you might think they are full already and no room for something else i disagree and punt the crossuses between them they are going to flower before the Tête-à-tête anyway .

13 ) Time for the small containers after filling them partly with the potting soil , i divided the Fritillaria bulbs over the two smaller containers

14 ) And finally i added the anemone bulbs also to the smaller containers, and topped all four containers off with potting soil with a little pressure not to much but enough to make it compact on the top layer so that the wind won't blow it away.

15 )Time to secure the small containers on the balcony with tyraps.

16 ) and on the left side aswell .

17 )And now all we have to do is wait for Februari 2026 to see if it works or not . And hopefully it does work so that i can post new macro photos of the first signs of spring .

And I just finished planting a new bunch of Crocus and Daffodils. I still have more tulips to finish planting. Good luck with yours @stresskiller 🌷🌷🌷

I didn't want to risk tulips on the balcony , to much wind for them they would probably break before they can flower .
Good luck on planting your Tulips !

What a great idea to put all the spring bulbs in the containers. I bet it will be absolutely stunning in flower and hope to see the update when they do. ♥
