April Fools challenge 2026 | Day 3

This morning i went for a discovery tour in our area and we decided to go to a small fishers village near by called Spakenburg.

Although most of the older buildings are gone it still has a nice harbour and during the summer seasons it's always crowded with tourists , but not today.

Today is a cold day and a grey sky threatning with rain , but we managed to stay dry and we managed to take some photos to give you an impression about the local harbour .

This is my entry for the #monomad challenge.

1 ) We managed to park the car close to the harbour and after i took this photo i spotted a small local bakery with fresh bread so i bought some fresh bread for the weekend.

2 )A statue in the harbour reminding of a flood in 1916 the text on the plague is in Dutch and translates in to :

DURING THE FLOOD OF 1916

On the night of Thursday, January 13 to Friday, January 14, 1916, Bunschoten, Spakenburg, and Eemdijk were struck by a flood.

A severe northwesterly storm whipped the water in the harbors up to 3.25m +NAP.

That is approximately up to the bottom of the Queen's cloak. The force of nature drove the fishing boats onto the shore, after which they violently battered against the fishermen's homes.

The consequences were enormous. This made this storm surge one of the most severe disasters
that have ever plagued these villages.

Her Majesty Queen Wilhelmina visited Bunschoten-Spakenburg on Friday, January 21.
Diagonally opposite this place, a child had been born in a small attic room during the night of the disaster,
whom Her Majesty accepted as godchild during this visit.

Her interest in the population was great. With her visit, Queen Wilhelmina showed that she was one with her people in adversity.

3 ) looks like this part of the harbour is only pleasure yachts and sailing ships no real fishing boats in this part.
Looks like the old fishing boats are on the other side of those houses.

4 ) A lot of modern buildings in this part of the village or at least renovated to modern standards.

5 ) More pleasure yachts , and boathouses and also modern renovated houses not much left of the old buildings.

6 ) A map of the area

7 ) There was a boat in the midle of this photo saying on the side "Bed en B-ootje " "bed and Boat" probably something like bed and breakfast .

8 )At the start of the harbour you can see on the right the second harbour the one we didn't visit this time because it was just to cold and windy . Normaly people would stil go out on the water with this kind of weather , but i guess due to the high fuel prices they decided to stay home.

9 ) This house used to be a smokehouse for fish , it has been completly transformed in to a residential place .
Giving the old building a new purpose .

There are indeed a lot of fish stores in this country , since we are located next to the Northsea and our country is only 160 miles wide so .. doesn't take long to find fresh fish.

I forgot for a second you lived in the Netherlands. Lovely place, but never been there myself. Surely the pictures and TV doesn't do it justice.

same goes for the US , not everything you see in the movies , does match the real thing.
