Florence you haven't seen! || Fashion Show

When I was still living in my home country(I've lived in the UK for 5 years now) I worked as a designer for a large fashion chain. I designed so called 'heavy garment' - mainly jackets, coats and trousers. I worked in the women's department for a while, but personally I prefer minimalism, and this was reflected strongly in my designs, which were described as 'too raw'.

I asked to be transferred to the men's department - and there I felt immediately at home. Dusty, muted colours are definitely closer to my heart and aesthetic, and it worked out perfectly - they were also the most saleable. If you were to believe our sales statistics, you would think that men in central Europe (apart from Poland we had shops in Germany, Russia, Hungary, etc.) wear only navy blue, black and dark grey :D

One of my duties as a designer was to go to fashion fairs, mainly in Italy and Paris. Florence's Pitti Uomo is one of the most important events of its kind and that's where we went every year in search of inspiration, new materials and shapes.

podwojne pioro zlote gradient.png

What is exactly a Pitti Uomo?

Pitti Uomo, translated into English is simply Pitti Men. It's one of the worlds most important platforms for launching new projects in men's fashion and is held twice a year in Florence, at the Fortezza de Basso, with the first ever edition being held in 1972. For over 60 years, Pitti Uomo has served as one of the most important men's trade fairs, more specifically in Italy's main fashion sector, “ready-to-wear fashion.” Every year, for four days in January and four days in June, Florence becomes the capital of men's fashion.

Luckily, one year the graduate of the local fashion school - Martin, went with us. He knew Florence like the back of his hand and not only showed us places that are not crowded with tourists, but still extremely charming. And most importantly, he told us that during Pitti Uomo, in order to gain an even bigger audience (the city is jammed at this time with designers and artists and curators of all kinds) - there is a public defence of the 'Polimoda' fashin school's diplomas. When he mentioned the aspiring new designers to us - we were all excited, so we cleared a few hours of the fair to see the diploma defences.

gold gradient pojedyncze pioro.png

I must admit that the whole event exceeded my expectations. The richness of designs, cuts, patterns, textures as well as the way they were presented - completely stunned me. Although I privately prefer very minimalist designs - I couldn't get enough of the lace, ruffles and hand-painted fabrics. The models presenting the outfits could be seen first in the beautiful building - and then there was the presentation of the individual artists and collections in front of the building. Each designers had to present five silhouettes.

I took hundreds of photos, but the whole place was very crowded, so not many of them are really suitable for presentation.

Still in the building - the models presenting the collections were fantastically 'exposed'. Everything felt more like an art presentation in a museum than the vibrant atmosphere of a fashion show. What do you think, will any of them achieve fame on the scale of Alexander McQueen?

gold gradient pojedyncze pioro.png

In addition to the fantastic and utterly twisted designs, it is also worth noting the building itself, where the defence took place. Baroque frames, gold and crystal chandeliers paradoxically blended perfectly with the modern designs. If you are not particularly interested in fashion - it is still worth to check out the interior of the building itself, it is truly marvellous:)

gold gradient pojedyncze pioro.png

Besides the diploma defences - you could also admire the fruits of the work of the best graduate of industrial design - handbags, shoes, etc.

Even though I was into fashion with both feet at the time, and watched fashion shows every day to keep up with trends - I was still surprised and amazed by many things. Unusual combinations, the rediscovery of forgotten fabrics, or the use of materials that we don't usually associate with clothes - all this was captured in many designs with extraordinary sensitivity.

podwojne pioro zlote gradient.png

I hope that you too will find these designs interesting - or at least - they make you smile:)

Have a lovely weekend!
Yours,
Strega Azure

You really have had some incredible life experiences - fascinating stuff here!

While I don't understand the designs, I do find them very unusual and interesting. Can't say I have ever seen anything quite like this. It's like living art.

I am glad you find it interesting!

I imagine there is plenty of ideas behind the designs, but for me - the richness of colours, textures and all that is more than enough to enjoy them:) And as you said - living art - that's for sure:)

It looks quite glamorous to be a model but I imagine from the Top Model shows etc that I have seen, that there is an awful lot of just standing around, I dont know if I could do it myself and have a big respect to those who do. Love these photos and impressions. Lovely backdrop and some interesting designs for sure, I think some of the designs can be extreme and dont make it to the high street I guess. My wife likes watching those designer programs with Gok Wan and the more recent one Next In Fashion. I wouldn't normally watch it but they are sometimes worth a chuckle.

Thank you for popping by @mypathrofire!

To be perfectly honest - I was never a fan of TV fashion shows, they never looked true to me, since I've seen few runways from behind the scenes - and it is nothing like in those. I am avid fan of men's fashion, but again - I prefer very minimalistic approach, very much like Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto, which has nothing to do with current trends as such. No crazy shapes or loud patterns :D

But I did enjoyed the show, becouse you nearly feel all the passion and work behind those projects. Modern high fashion doesn't have much to do with street fashion anymore. Back in the days the designers like Coco Chanel's or Christian Dior's projects could go from catwalk to the street no problem at all. Now it is not the case at all. High fashion went so far it is more of it's own thing, the form of art I would say.

That makes sense, even sometimes it is hard to find some high street fashion that I would wear as I would prefer to just blend in. Have you looked at many historical photos regardin mens fashion? They all seem to wear the same clothes and very little variation.

100% Fabrics were extremally expensive too. Most of the people even having money - would were the same this every day, and just patch stuff up with some random cloth, whatever was available.
Plus if you think about it for a minute - suits - they don't change much for decades! You have colours variations, but the shape of it didn't really change that much. Woman's fashion changed soooo much. From corsets and layers to 'naked dress' thing :D

I find it fascinating:)

Yes, I find it all quite fascinating too. Especially when you see old video footage and people all wearing the same hats from the era etc, only since after the war things seemed to change much more. You make a good point, if you read some old literature, the way they talk about how "Gentlemen" were dressed and everybody else. Especially the value placed on good shoes!

How would you describe todays fashion?

It all seems so casual and in a way slothenly (not sure thats a word) compared to the formal clothes of old. I guess this also represents the way society has also changed compared to the past.

I love the old footage with the barbate gentlemen with top hats on and a cane by their side!

To be perfectly honest, I'm not at all a fan of today's street fashion.

Fortunately, fashion comes back in very specific cycles - there is a time for glitter, teased hairstyles and too tight leggings, and then there is a time for bulky suits and hats. Music videos use fashion in a very cool manner - current fashion - but on steroids. In this way, when we look back, we know that no one on the streets would dressed like this or wear make up like this, but we can seen the general trend in its clearest and most glaring form.

At the very moment we are still at big 'come-back' of sportswear, and it is incorporated everywhere - sneakers with suits, yoga pants on the streets, colourful hoodies with mad prints on, and using fabrics that normally are used only for sportswear... Yeah, it will pass. Like with every trend - it will pass.

What is funny - if one is very 'fashion forward' , one will look on ones old pictures in 5 years time, and say' yeah, I looked like a clown'. I can guarantee it. Short - time trends are created for fast-fashion business to earn bucks, not for people to be 'unique' or looking 'original'. :D All baits!

My previous @v4vapp proposal has expired. I have a new one which is running but unfunded right now. I'm still running @v4vapp and all my other services.

I've just updated v4v.app and I'm getting ready for some exciting new features after the next hard fork.

Please consider asking your friends to vote for prop #265 or consider unvoting the return vote.

For understandable reasons in the current crypto climate it is harder to get funded by the DHF, I accept this so I'm asking a wider audience for help again. I'll also add that I power up Hive every day and usually power up larger amounts on 1st of the Month. I'm on Hive for ideological reasons much more than for only economic benefit.

Additionally you can also help with a vote for Brianoflondon's Witness using KeyChain or HiveSigner

If you have used v4v.app I'd really like to hear your feedback, and if you haven't I'd be happy to hear why or whether there are other things you want it to do.

There are some nice pieces there but I can't imagine seeing them in the street or someone digging a field wearing them.
Why is it that models don't smile for photos?

Oh yeah, that is definitely not streetwear:)

Why is it that models don't smile for photos?

There is whole thing about it - since the model is sadly only 'an accessory' to the outfit or, as many like to call it directly, a coat rack, it is very important that one's behaviour or appearance does not distract from the the actual design. I was talking to few of them - and I can assure you - they are capable of smiling :D, this is just way they were told to behave.

It is actually why I still have keen interest in fashion - it just constantly changes the all game rules! If you will not keep up with the trends for some time - it is easy to get confused :D But it is fun to watch all this creativity. I myself prefer very minimalistic styles, but again - those are more of a eye candy. I was playing with sewing ages ago. But who knows :D

It is like in the shop - you would put on the mannequin at front of the store - bright beige coat, but you don't order plenty of it. You will order navy blue and black mostly, becouse this is what people want to buy:))) People are buying 'with their eyes', so yeah, it is all tricks and games :D

I was working as a fashion designer for 4 years for big chain. Although there was some cool things about the job itself - the whole textile industry is just rotten to the core. I am ok with small, individual projects, small quantities, but man... fast fashion is just pure evil.

I have never really quite understood fashion shows. Why some clothes look more daring than the rest… is it like a art in clothes form? Because I see quite the designs and just wonder how they came to be. What was the inspiration? Why did the person decide to make that? You’re a designer… I guess you can answer my burning questions 😅

Overall, those pictures are telling. I really loved that black with the stuff like a bundled rose in front of it and the white thing that looks like a suit (see? Can’t even name them right). Lol. Forgive me. I really lack fashion sense.

I would call that art at this point, becouse it went so far from being in any way purposeful:)

Because I see quite the designs and just wonder how they came to be. What was the inspiration? Why did the person decide to make that? You’re a designer… I guess you can answer my burning questions 😅

There are plenty influences, I could to another post about it:D I will highlight few for you @deraaa:

image.png

image.png

So here you have strong techno or electro punk influence(it is type of music combined with cyborg - like cosplay fashion projects)

image.png

Here would be religion. I don't want to get into that, becouse it might sound offensive to some people. It is very bold statement. Gold on the lips mean that 'women don't have voice'. It is elaboration of saying 'Speech is silver, silence is golden'

image.png

Very strong south Korean modern fashion influence - baggy, oversized jackets, and very sportwear looking stuff.

image.png

Here is deconstruction of classic trench coat.

I could do that whole day :D If there are any particular picture that interest you - just let me know, I'll be more than happy to answer!

I really love it all. And now that I have explanations, I seem to really understand what the whole thing is about. It’s really amazing how poetic it this stuff can be. Lol. I guess I don’t know how to look for the deep stuff. That first picture though. What does it mean to have those bunch of straws?

Whole thing about techno/electro punk is all about changing your appearance to look as non-human as possible. Picture masks like had Scorpion or Sub-0 in Mortal combat. Then hair - they love dreadlocks, but not classic ones, but made out of plastic, thick rubber, old cables even :D I would ges this was an inspiration for the designer:)

Here you have example of cyber - goth version of the look:)

You starting to look like some kind of celestial being, never knew you were into fashion designing. Now I have to ask myself, what exactly are you not good at?😅😅.

Those designs are incredible, it might look familiar from your own end since different countries tends to have there pattern of design due to cultural influence, so I'm not quite familiar with the designs.

It must have had an amazing experience to be present in such a fashion designers gathering.

'celestial being' 😎

Since those were graduation designs - there were meant to be on the crazy side, I guess. It is final year, so the designers tried to 'bring all in'. But to be perfectly honest - there are regular fashion shows that look this way, with such mad designs and all that. Look genuinely legit. Some of them wasn't out together very well(construction wise I mean), but ideas were really cool:)

Those designs are incredible, it might look familiar from your own end since different countries tends to have there pattern of design due to cultural influence, so I'm not quite familiar with the designs.

I would say it looks quite eclectic to me. I can recognize some history or other designers influences in those projects, but most of them are trying to do 'statement', rather than keep all as pure aesthetic. I think it is kind of typical for nowadays fashion. Everything must be 'a statement', nothing can be just pretty, or nice:)

I really loved the atmosphere there, was buzzing with emotions, really cool:)

I was never got the chance to design crazy stuff like this, for fast fashion/street fashion - that would never work. Plus I prefer minimalism anyways :D
