Successful foraging trip to southern Vermont
I always like to start my post with an eye catching photo π
Happy #fungifriday ππ I took a Friday foraging trip to southern Vermont and had some luck βοΈ
First I found some very young chicken of the woods.
These were very tender π
Black trumpets π
The black trumpets also known as black chantrelles were the reason for the trip. They are very tasty. I returned to the same area I visited last week and foraged some more. Brought some home though not in the same quantity as last week π
Many of the black trumpets were growing from the forest floor in the mottled sun light.
The mix of leaves on the forest floor remineded me of a puzzle. Or hidden object picture... can you spot the black trumpet?
More black trumpets growing from the end of a log.
Growing under a rock. This is a very good place for black trumpets. They were all over.
My favorite black trumpet photo of the day π€©
Omelette for Lunch π. Black trumpets and chicken of the woods. With some red cherry and yellow grape tomatoes from the garden. Plus a little Vermont cheddar cheese. Very tasty but I guess I jumped to the end of the story.
Also topped omelette with some fresh basil from garden. Ok I'm going to finish lunch before I finish this post π€£
Back to my trip, I also found some oyster mushrooms. I harvested some of these also. I harvested chicken of the woods, black trumpets and the oyster mushrooms.
I found lots of mushrooms so now be prepared for lots of unidentified shots - like this very interesting black and white mushroom cap.
Here's a bright splash of color! two orange mushrooms.
Older brown mushroom with two small orange mushrooms.
Mature brownish red mushroom.
Emerging white mushroom.
White mushroom with a look at the forest. This is typical of the area I was foraging today. It is a forest preserve in southern Vermont. Many of the towns have a small forest preserve or town forest. Some date back to the original land grants from the English monarchy before the American Revolution.
Crisp white mushroom.
Decaying yellow mushrooms.
Greyish mushroom.
Interesting mushroom cap.
Cool looking purple mushroom in the shade.
Some older shelf mushrooms.
Opened up mushroom.
Purple mushroom. Its interesting to see the wide variety of mushrooms.
Here's an interesting red mushroom. I think this is a red bolette.
Another red mushroom more opened up.
Nice new growth shelf mushrooms.
I included this shot just because I like the photo.
Another more for the photo than the mushroom π
Bright orange mushrooms that stand out as different.
There was actually a range of yellows and oranges.
Fun fungi shot of one of the little distinctly yellow mushroom.
More of the brighter yellows.
Variation on the yellows, yellow stem with brown/grey cap.
Is it lifting that rock? π€£
There is also significant variance even among the seemingly common white mushrooms. This one has a little of a translucent feel.
Nice photo of a white mushroom coming up.
Some nice shelf mushrooms to end my post. Reishi mushrooms I think. Thanks for making it this far if you are still with me lol. I could have stopped with the mushrooms I foraged but I saw so many different mushroom varieties, I couldn't stop myself from over-sharing. π³
Have a great Friday. Happy #fungifriday ππ
Yay! π€

Wow that omelet looks tasty π
For the black and white mushroom, might be a young 'Old Man of the Woods'. The purple is a Cortinarius (C. iodes?). Some nice Amanitas in there. That 'emerging white mushroom' reminds me of Russula brevipes. Dang I want to head up north now.
Thanks for the help on a few IDs. I checked the ones you called out online - looks like I didn't miss anything for edibles and even avoided some toxic ones π Since I'm a newbie, I'm focused on learning a few IDs really well and looking for those versus trying to ID stuff I find.
Yeah it is definitely old man of the woods.
You can overshare with me as much as you like . I adore fungi!! I loved this post and found myself so jealous. I want to find a chicken of the woods soooo bad. It's morel season here but I don't know first place to look...
Thanks riverflows π the best way to learn is find a friend that will go out into the woods with you. Unfortunately lots of foragers have closely guarded secret spots haha but almost all of them will go out for a walk with you and talk about what to look for and where. Thats how I got started. Its also another powerful way to connect to nature. You start to learn about different trees because many mushrooms like particular trees. And then you start to think about what type of habitat different trees like. Its one of those things that ties everything together.
Exactly...been out myself this Autumn and have learnt alot. Primarily saffron milk caps, suillus, tremella, wood blewitts.
You are so lucky that you are aware of how to forage. I live fungi but I am yet to classify what is safe to eat and what isn't. But...from a few posts of fellow fungi lovers, I now know that chicken mushroom is food :)
The omelette looks delicious π€€
Thanks for checking out my post π I try to always have a more experienced forager confirm my edible mushroom IDs. There are also some really good field guides out there.
Food! :D
That was one cool post break.
You found all that during one walk?
Thanks EwKaw π I originally titled the post quick foraging trip then I realized I spent most of the afternoon in the woods lol. Yeah one place, one of those places its hard to leave.
So many cool looking mushrooms, I like those black
trumpets! Do you see any Lions Mane there??
Thanks Shasta π We get Lions Mane but a little later in the summer/early fall I think. I haven't seen any yet.
I think the first top orange mushrooms are jackolantern mushrooms. They glow at night but you need a long exposure photo to catch the glow. The shelf mushrooms towards the end look quite a bit like reishi, still good for grinding into powder for medicinal purposes. I mix the powder with hot cocoa.
Now I just have to remember where that first picture was taken to go back for a night time shoot lol
woow ... the mushrooms are very unique and cute, where I rarely see them, maybe I will hunt to a place where there is more mushroom growth.
We have lots of rain and forests here. Idea for mushrooms π
