Successful foraging trip to southern Vermont

Orange Mushrooms

I always like to start my post with an eye catching photo πŸ‘€

Happy #fungifriday πŸ„πŸ™‚ I took a Friday foraging trip to southern Vermont and had some luck ☘️

Chicken of the woods

First I found some very young chicken of the woods.

Young chicken of the woods

These were very tender πŸ˜‹

Black trumpets!

Black trumpets 😁

Black trumpet in moss

The black trumpets also known as black chantrelles were the reason for the trip. They are very tasty. I returned to the same area I visited last week and foraged some more. Brought some home though not in the same quantity as last week πŸ™

Black trumpet in oak leaves

Many of the black trumpets were growing from the forest floor in the mottled sun light.

Forest floor

The mix of leaves on the forest floor remineded me of a puzzle. Or hidden object picture... can you spot the black trumpet?

Black trumpets on log

More black trumpets growing from the end of a log.

Black trumpets under rock

Growing under a rock. This is a very good place for black trumpets. They were all over.

Black trumpet up close

My favorite black trumpet photo of the day 🀩

Lunch

Omelette for Lunch 😁. Black trumpets and chicken of the woods. With some red cherry and yellow grape tomatoes from the garden. Plus a little Vermont cheddar cheese. Very tasty but I guess I jumped to the end of the story.

Plated omelette

Also topped omelette with some fresh basil from garden. Ok I'm going to finish lunch before I finish this post 🀣

Oyster mushrooms

Back to my trip, I also found some oyster mushrooms. I harvested some of these also. I harvested chicken of the woods, black trumpets and the oyster mushrooms.

Interesting mushroom cap

I found lots of mushrooms so now be prepared for lots of unidentified shots - like this very interesting black and white mushroom cap.

Bright Mushrooms

Here's a bright splash of color! two orange mushrooms.

Brown mushroom with orange mushrooms

Older brown mushroom with two small orange mushrooms.

Brownish red mushrooms

Mature brownish red mushroom.

Emerging white mushroom

Emerging white mushroom.

Context for white mushroom

White mushroom with a look at the forest. This is typical of the area I was foraging today. It is a forest preserve in southern Vermont. Many of the towns have a small forest preserve or town forest. Some date back to the original land grants from the English monarchy before the American Revolution.

Crisp white mushroom

Crisp white mushroom.

Decaying mushrooms

Decaying yellow mushrooms.

Greyish mushroom

Greyish mushroom.

Interesting mushroom cap

Interesting mushroom cap.

Older mushroom

Cool looking purple mushroom in the shade.

Older shelf mushrooms

Some older shelf mushrooms.

Opened up brown mushroom

Opened up mushroom.

Purple mushroom

Purple mushroom. Its interesting to see the wide variety of mushrooms.

Red mushroom

Here's an interesting red mushroom. I think this is a red bolette.

Red mushroom opened up

Another red mushroom more opened up.

Nice shelf mushrooms

Nice new growth shelf mushrooms.

Brown mushroom

I included this shot just because I like the photo.

Small flat mushroom

Another more for the photo than the mushroom πŸ™ƒ

Tiny orange mushrooms

Bright orange mushrooms that stand out as different.

Tiny orange mushrooms in pine needles

There was actually a range of yellows and oranges.

Tiny yellow mushroom

Fun fungi shot of one of the little distinctly yellow mushroom.

Yellow mushrooms with teeth marks

More of the brighter yellows.

Yellow stemmed mushrooms

Variation on the yellows, yellow stem with brown/grey cap.

Under a rock

Is it lifting that rock? 🀣

White cap in oak leaves

There is also significant variance even among the seemingly common white mushrooms. This one has a little of a translucent feel.

White cap

Nice photo of a white mushroom coming up.

Shelf mushroom up close

Some nice shelf mushrooms to end my post. Reishi mushrooms I think. Thanks for making it this far if you are still with me lol. I could have stopped with the mushrooms I foraged but I saw so many different mushroom varieties, I couldn't stop myself from over-sharing. 😳

Shelf mushrooms

Have a great Friday. Happy #fungifriday πŸ„πŸ™‚

Wow that omelet looks tasty πŸ˜‹
For the black and white mushroom, might be a young 'Old Man of the Woods'. The purple is a Cortinarius (C. iodes?). Some nice Amanitas in there. That 'emerging white mushroom' reminds me of Russula brevipes. Dang I want to head up north now.

Thanks for the help on a few IDs. I checked the ones you called out online - looks like I didn't miss anything for edibles and even avoided some toxic ones πŸ˜… Since I'm a newbie, I'm focused on learning a few IDs really well and looking for those versus trying to ID stuff I find.

Thanks riverflows πŸ™‚ the best way to learn is find a friend that will go out into the woods with you. Unfortunately lots of foragers have closely guarded secret spots haha but almost all of them will go out for a walk with you and talk about what to look for and where. Thats how I got started. Its also another powerful way to connect to nature. You start to learn about different trees because many mushrooms like particular trees. And then you start to think about what type of habitat different trees like. Its one of those things that ties everything together.

You are so lucky that you are aware of how to forage. I live fungi but I am yet to classify what is safe to eat and what isn't. But...from a few posts of fellow fungi lovers, I now know that chicken mushroom is food :)

The omelette looks delicious 🀀

Thanks for checking out my post πŸ™‚ I try to always have a more experienced forager confirm my edible mushroom IDs. There are also some really good field guides out there.

Thanks Shasta πŸ™‚ We get Lions Mane but a little later in the summer/early fall I think. I haven't seen any yet.

I think the first top orange mushrooms are jackolantern mushrooms. They glow at night but you need a long exposure photo to catch the glow. The shelf mushrooms towards the end look quite a bit like reishi, still good for grinding into powder for medicinal purposes. I mix the powder with hot cocoa.

Now I just have to remember where that first picture was taken to go back for a night time shoot lol
