Squash photos... mostly

Curled

Our garden is hitting its stride now that we are a couple of weeks into summer.

Squash

Squash plant is running. It was just a seedling when planted.

Star

The squash blossoms are beautiful and edible but we don't often eat them.

Nasturtium

Speaking of edible, nasturtium flowers and leaves are both edible. I like the leaves on salads because they have a peppery kick.

Apple

An apple on my Crimson Topaz tree 🙂 we are having a tough year with apple trees. I buy small, bare root trees which take a few years to start producing. Four of my trees out of nine planted over the last 3 years bloomed nicely and put on apples. Then the neighborhood deers wandered through and ate all the little apples they could reach and all the leaves/branches off the bottom part of the trees. One of my producing trees was small enough it was still inside deer fencing so its apples survived. Those plus a few apples up high on the other trees are all thats left 🙁

Zucchini

Zucchini are also thriving right now. Very similar blooms to squash. Have a great day 👍

Soon you'll have more than you know what to do with... Do you know how to make preserves?

We make all kinds of things with apple and love to just eat them off the tree. Lets see baked goods - pies, crisps, cakes - then cider (which you can freeze), apple butter which is kind of a preserve - it keeps well in fridge, you can add them to salads, sandwiches, pizzas. The wierdest thing we do is add them to soups adds some sweetness to tomato soup or squash soups.

But what about all the extra squash? Maybe time to get a meat goat?

Bummer about the deer. They can devastate gardens. Loved the star photo of the blossom.

I'm going to look at it as pruning 😅 the trees will eventually have enough growth above the "deer line" to produce just fine

I had thought of that, but wondered if it would put the fruit too high out of reach….

If I ever have enough apples to justify it, I'm going to buy one of those apple pickers with a cage on the end of a pole. My neighbor has one that we helped him harvest his apples with last year. He has some big old Macintosh trees.

I'm growing a few zucchinis in my backyard but I don't have any flowers yet...
But no deers, only squirrels that put their teeth into every strawberry that starts to become red 😀
Have a great Sunday
