My garden in Vermont update

Hanging baskets

Welcome to my garden. My garden is in Addison County, Vermont. Things are super green here after a solid week of rain.

Side view

First, a couple of shots of the entire garden. Last year I blogged each week on building our garden. This is the second year.

Front view

We cleared some downed trees and brush to retake this small field. Then put up a fence and built raised beds. The soil in this swampy mostly pine forest is acidic and rocky so we grow almost every thing in raised beds.

Raspberries

A couple of things we do grow in the ground are raspberries - which actually grow wild on the forest fringe around our garden.

Blueberries

And blue berries which also don't mind the acidic soil. The support/netting trellis for the berries is new this year.

Corn and peppers

We added sweet corn this year. Last year we grew sunflowers down the middle of some of our beds but the squirrels destroyed it all. Our heartbreak/anger kept us from going back with sunflowers this year 🙁

Brussel sprouts

Brussel sprouts were a big performer last year and are doing great again this year.

Green beans - June 20

We planted more green beans and built a simple trellis for them.

Green beans - June 29

This picture is today, 9 days later than the last! Look how fast they are growing (and the corn) 🙂

Tomatoes

Our favorite crop is tomatoes and 3 of the beds have tomatoes in them 😊

Extra Tomatoes

Plus we have some tomatoes in pots along the fence and on our worktable.

Extra Extra Tomatoes

We had lots of tomato seedlings. We planted them all. Some are also in a narrow planter along the back fence.

Chives

The small, narrow beds along the fences are new this year.

Side beds

We were looking for more planting space and also for smaller plants that need some space like radishes. The bigger beds got so overgrown last year that some plants were crowded out.

Flower bed 1

There are small beds outside the garden by the fence posts.

Flower bed 2

The small beds have marigolds and 4 o'clocks. I got the 4 o'clocks seeds from my Mom but I think its too cold for them in Vermont.

Flower bed 3

A stray milkweed is in one bed and we planted a few sunflowers because we couldn't resist.

Milkweed flowers

Speaking of milkweed, I love milkweed blooms.

Milkweed preserve

I have a patch of milkweed I leave for the Monarchs. This area had milkweed before I cleared it. I leave an area each year for the pollenators.

Onions

Another little project outside the fence. I planted some onions left over from last season and let them go to seed. I hope to have a bunch of onions here next year.

Nasturtium

One last new addition for this year's garden, Nasturtium. They are thriving. We have been enjoying the flowers and leaves on our salads.

Squash

Ok. Last bed has zucchini. The zukes are doing well. We also have some squash, cucumbers, and pumpkin scattered about the beds. Mostly along the edges so we can train the vines to grow outside the beds.

Whew 😅 thats a big post but its been too long since the last update. Happy gardening everyone! 🌻👨‍🌾

Everything looks so lush! I love this time of year in the garden! Darn rodents! I bought some Shake Away rodent repellent and that has kept the squirrels off my deck, but nothing keeps the Chipmunks away. I am somewhat lucky that my plants are all in pots and I was able to move the tomato and pepper plants in on the back porch. The Chipmunks were eating everything when tiny baby tomatoes and peppers first appeared on the plants and breaking the plants trying to get at them. I am not sure the plants will get enough sun on the porch to actually produce anything, but it is heartbreaking when they steal everything before it has a chance to grow. My mini cucumbers appear to be doing well on the back porch, and I have my pot of green beans caged off and it is still out on the deck. Lettuce, spinach and beets are also protected to keep chipmunks from digging. I am envious of your beautiful garden!

Thanks. Its a lot of work but its a labor of love. Sounds like you are really maxing out production on your porch and deck 🙂 We love sunflowers so much we couldn't do without. These are growing on our screened in porch 😊
Indoor sunflowers
They are about to out grow the space. Not sure what is next for them 🤔
