Morning Glories and Apples

One new with old

Vermont is wonderful this time of year. Summer is fading but morning glories are hanging around. The weather is beautiful. Cool mornings and warm sunny afternoons.

Magenta

My morning glories are three colors this year. Magenta like this one.

Pale blue

Pale blue like this beauty.

Blue

And darker blue like this one.

With a Zinnia

We save seeds and the colors are unpredictable. Morning glories are very popular with pollinators especially humming birds. As a result they are highly hybridized year over year. Particularly if you have specialized colors they will tend back to the dominant genetic colors over time.

Liberty Apples

My Liberty apples are nearly ripe and we will liken pick some this weekend when we have guests staying with us.

Empire

In the meantime, we have been fortunate to harvest some apples at a couple of neighbors. Older trees around here tend to be Macintosh or Empire. I think these are Empire. There is an orchard we often visit that has some very old Macintosh trees (some 100 years old) that the current owner has systematically grafted different varieties onto. He now has 80+ varieties!

All of these morning glories looks so beautiful. I also have sowed the seeds of these recently, hope they germinate soon. :)

Beautiful colors on these flowers... Apple season is coming; lucky to have them right in the garden.
Have a great evening

Thanks. We are starting to enjoy apples on our salads and just as a snack. Need to seek out some apple cider donuts.

I've been collecting the rops from my old Mac tree. They are pretty and will be used for cider.

We don't have a cider press. Maybe as my trees mature we will buy one. I like cider.

I found mine at an estate sale many years ago. It was brand new and sold for $50. I've only used it 2 or 3 times since then.

My son worked at an orchard for awhile and help them operate a big commercial press. It started my interest in cider, I just haven't followed through. We have a juicer that we use occasionally but it is small and cleanup is time consuming so we don't use it much.
