Loon family pictures!

Classic loon shot

My local lake has a pair of nesting loons.

Mom and babies

They hatched two babies recently!

Loon babies on lake

I was invited out on a neighbors boat to check them out and take some photos. I liked this shot with the lake camps and docks in the background. The loon nest was on the island that is closer in.

Island

Here's a view of the island. It blends into the shore but you can make it out. This lake is in central Vermont. We are on the southern edge of loon's breeding range. There is a breeding pair on this lake, another on a nearby lake at a higher elevation, and another sometimes on a pond that is separated from the lake by a low ridge.

Dad bringing fish

We got to observe lots of activities. It was like watching a nature documentary. Here is dad coming up from a dive with a fish for the babies.

Momma

The babies were just starting to learn to dive. Mom demonstrating that some times you rise up out of the water to dry off your wings after diving.

Baby

Baby giving it a try 🙂 One of the babies went on a short dive while we were watching. Both swam about with their heads under water... either practicing to dive or watching for mom and dad to return with fish 😁

Blue water

Here's a solo shot of one of the parents.

Fishing village

The final photo is a family shot. Its like they are just part of the community. Diving for fish while the human fisherman repositions his boat. And other fishermen are preparing to go out at the dock on shore.

Thanks. We had a guide basically. A neighbor that grew up on the lake. Knows all about the lake, boats, and loons.

That's even better. Locals normally know a ton of stuff!

There's a group that watches out for the loons. She is actually taking a shift in her boat watching over the loons on the 4th of July weekend. Just kind of drifts along not too far from loons to keep crazy, drunk people in fast boats away 🙄

Oh that's great. Thumbs up for that, just is a shame that it's even needed!

Thanks. We are going to Maine to stay at a friends cabin for the 4th of July. There are baby geese and ducks around too. Just haven't got any good photo opportunities 🙁

Such beautiful birds and a gorgeous lake . I have to travel north to hear/see loons. This lower half of the state has become much too populated for them.

Its was so much fun seeing them! The babies make kind of a cooing sound. And the parents did their call a couple of times.

I remember coming up on one that was dead while I was canoeing close to the shore in Canada only to realize that it was playing possum to protect its nest. I was close to tears before I realized what good actors they are!

Very nice photos of this little family! Loons are supposed to be a bird people find intriguing. I've never seen a live one...

Thanks. The loon call is very haunting. Anytime I hear it I am transported to the north woods.
