A couple of butterflies on Tuesday

Monarch

I saw a beautiful monarch butterfly on our morning walk.

Monarch 2

It was early and it found a nice spot in the sun to warm up. We are seeing lots of monarchs right now. There is plenty of milkweed around for laying eggs and the caterpillars to eat plus plenty of wildflowers for nectar.

Black Swallowtail

I also saw this Black Swallowtail out in a swampy area. He was farther out in the swamp than I was willing to venture so forgive the zoom 😊

Turtlehead

This wildflower is called White Turtlehead with the scientific name of Chelone glabra.

Turtlehead plant

It is native and grows in wet areas so of course I have some in my yard. Nice time of the year for my swampy areas. The Joe Pye, Boneset and Jewelweed are all in bloom.

Bone Set

Since I mentioned them, here are some quick photos. This is Boneset.

Joe Pye

Joe Pye looks superficially similar to Boneset but has purple blooms.

Jewelweed

Jewelweed has these small tumpet flowers with high sugar nectar that hummingbirds love. I started with butterflies as promised but I guess it turned into a mini-tour of my swamp 🙂
