This weekend, I am finding myself immersed in the serene beauty of the village of Papingo, nestled in the heart of the Vikos–Aoös National Park in Epirus, Greece. The village, now part of the municipality of Zagori, is divided into two charming hamlets: Megalo Papingo and Mikro Papingo.

Papingo is a haven for nature enthusiasts, attracting hikers and mountaineers from around the globe. Surrounded by deciduous forests and graced by the snowcapped Astraka peak of Mt Tymphe, the village offers a picturesque escape. The Vikos Gorge, the largest canyon in Greece, adds to the allure, making Papingo a magnet for those seeking an adventure in the great outdoors.

As I strolled through Megalo Papingo, I discovered quaint tavernas serving up delicious traditional fare. The local cuisine perfectly complemented the rustic charm of the village, offering a delightful blend of flavors unique to the region. It's a culinary journey that introduces you to the rich tapestry of Greek mountain cuisine.

History seeps through the cobblestone streets of Papingo. The Kallineios School, founded in 1780, stands as a testament to the village's intellectual development. Churches like Saint Blaise and Saint George, dating back centuries, whisper stories of a bygone era.

A footpath leads from Papingo to the sub-alpine plateaus of Mt Tymphe, culminating in the breathtaking Drakolimni, a glacial lake at 2000 m. Along the way, the Mountain Hut of Tymphe offers respite and stunning views. The Kolymbethres, or rock pools, created by the stream of Rogovos, add another layer of natural beauty to the landscape.

Papingo's history unfolds from its mention in a Byzantine bull in 1325 to its prosperity in the Ottoman era and later struggles. The village's resurgence as a tourist attraction, especially after the Kallikratis Law project, has breathed new life into its age-old streets.

Once again I found myself in a place where time stops and the feeling you have is that of joy and tranquillity
