Welcome to Night market at "Gateway to Heaven" in Puri.

As sun set, the beaches at puri transform into a lighting and happening zone. Tourist from all walk of life reach beaches to enjoy some leisurely time. I happen to stumble upon these photographs from my Puri visit last year. It was a wonderful and memorable experience, to be part of a unique culture. The beach area was just adjacent to our Hotel, and the place comes electrifying at night with many lights all over the place.

It is strange to see the great transformation. What used to a peaceful place during day transform into lively place. At night, the Puri beach transforms into a lively and illuminated space with glowing sand, bustling night markets. While during the day, the stall were empty and the beaches were mostly used by the visitors to enjoy the tides and swimming. In the noon it was completely a deserted place, with hardly any people in sight. The name "Swargadwar" directly translates to "Gateway to Heaven". Located near the famous Jagannath Temple, Swargadwar is considered a holy site where the god Vishnu resides as Jagannath. It is a highly significant site where many Hindus go to perform the final rituals for their deceased loved ones. Performing rituals like "Pinda Daan" here is believed to help the departed soul attain peace and liberation (Moksha).

The coastal climate makes evenings, especially during the peak season from October to April, comfortable for strolling and shopping. Tourists enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, especially during the cooler evening hours, while locals and visitors alike gather for delicious street food, shopping for local crafts, and watching cultural performances like sand art, music, and dance. The market area, especially around the Swargadwar Market, is filled with stalls selling local handicrafts, religious souvenirs, seashell products, and other goods, which attracts shoppers after sunset. The beach itself is open 24 hours, and the evening is a popular time for activities like camel rides and enjoying the lively atmosphere.

I know many people would be scared finding the place too crowded. But the lively sight could not stopped me from being at the place. I quickly get to the place which is hardly few steps from.my hotel. It was like crossing the road that kept us apart. Getting in the beach give a different feeling. It was actually crowded and people were selling all kind of items. While many visitors were enjoying the cool weather at the beach.

The low light, around the shore could not let me to take more pictures. But being there gives a different vibes to the place. You can enjoy all kind of street food and at the same time can shop for various conch shells. No doubt it is a bustling space to enjoy a different culture. Because of its deep religious significance, the area remains a place of spiritual activity at night, with rituals continuing to be performed. However, those visit this place neve wanted to miss out on the lively night market, which keeps the place alive till late at night.

In good faith - Peace!!

Dang, that is a lot of people. It makes me get a bit of a phobia just looking at it! I don't think I could handle being around that many people for a very long time.

Our beaches get pretty crowded here, but they are much smaller scale than that I think.

The night market at Swargadwar looks so vibrant. The way the peaceful beach transforms into such a lively, colorful place is amazing. The lights, the crowd, the street food everything feels full of energy. Must be an unforgettable experience to witness this side of Puri.

The change between day and night is truly impressive, but I can't help but think it's a place to go for a walk and spend time. This post is great, and your big smile in the first photo conveys so much emotion. Thank you for enjoying life and for sharing with us the joy you felt in Puri 🙏
