Florally Speaking - All Things Blossom.

You can call me a farmer. Actually a grown up farmer who is yet to get into full fledged farming profession. I like the way cultivation and farming are carried out. People in my area intensively indulge in farming activity. The best sight for a farmer are the ever green fields with abundant crops all over the field. For the time being, in my learning days, my best way to learn is to discover some hidden gems in middle of the crops in between the fields.

Once the paddys seeds are sowed, visiting the field is a regular things for a farmer. It is importsnt to keep a close eye on the growth of the paddy and look after its well being. I went to see my fields too. The crops are bit damaged due to irregular rainfall, which never could make a farmer happy. But I find something hidden in middle of the crops. A Pink fur like flower is enough to attract your attention and so does mine.

This is not a regular plant that you often find in my area. It was rare one. It was makInh an interesting piece in the field. Even small in size it looked too beautiful in middle of the paddy fields.

It is known as Cockscomb or Silver cock’s comb, Wild Cock’s Comb , Quail grass and Wool flower in English.

This one is 'not' cultivated in my area, so this particular one self grown in my field either through pollination or through winds or Insects. This flowers appears to be like cocks comb. The plant is not too big in size. It was average in size as long as the paddys were. It was creating a striking imbalance in the field. Thanks to Google it did not take much time to identify much details about these plant. The appearance of the flower is more of feathery, reddish purple inflorescence which is composed of many, tiny flowers. That is why it look like carrying 'fur on it.

The botanical name is Celosia. It belongs to Amaranthaceae family.The inflorescence consists of dense terminal spikes, formed by the interweaving of the papyraceous flowers, pinkish white to silvery white and sometimes bright pink at the tip of the flower spikes. The capsule is ellipsoidal, topped by a long style. - source

While the appearance look so attractive and beautiful. On further research, it comes to be a medicinal plant with multi putpose and usage. The plant which is rich in many benefits and each part of its are effective if put in correct usage.

The whole plant is a good antidote for snakebites. But I never seen its usage in our area. It is a great immune booster, the leaves, the roots, the flower, the seeds, the stem all have many properties and can be used as medicine for different health problems. This plant is useful the treatment of diarrhea, cataract, arthirities, skin problems etc.

The more I research about this plant, the more it surprises me with its variety of properties. I never knew, a plant grown as weed in my fields has so many medicinal benefits. It is a gem in itself, but surprisingly, no one in my area knew about it. I showed the picture to my uncle and he just say it a wild a plant. How strange that people are so unaware about existence of such plants in their fields. Anyway, I keep on clicking my mobile camera button to capture this cocks comb in different angles. It was time well spent in the field. Not with the crops but discovering something worthful gifts of nature. It is so strange to discover such high quality plant just during a casual walk. Surely if it is grown in abundant, then definitely everyone will notice it and dicover the mumtiple potential it has been carrying. But for now it was just another unwanted plant in the fields. But my discovery amazes me and made my day.

There are so many such things around which we never knew about and this gem of a plant in one such undiscovered plant in my area. Good to learn something new today.
