Bringing the sweet taste of the fields to the city market. [Streets of Amritsar]
We all love sugarcane juice, but it is hard the extract the juice at home. It has a hard, fibrous, and inedible outer layer which is tough to peel easily. Also it requires heavy machine to squeeze the juice. The stalks are pressed to extract juice, which is used to make sugar, jaggery, and syrups. Sugarcane is a tall, perennial grass from which sugar is extracted. The punjab provinces is rich sugarcane farming. On my first outing on tye street, I explored a new world of sugercane. You may find multiple pressing machine on the street selling sugercane juices.

There is a whole new world of sugercane behind these small carts selling juices. The morning hours on the Amritsar street is busy with people from farms arrived to sell their sugercane. There are multiple spots filled with sugercane grass. Infact most of the tractors or small frieght carrier found on the roadd have plenty of sugercane in it. The morning hours belongs to these farmer vehicle.

The farmers from far off places had came to the city market areas to sell their production. There are dedicated shop / agency who buys these produces and then further sell them to other retail user. These agency are buying the sugercane in bulk. They do not have any storage area, but they keep them on the road side. They know that they going to sell them further sooner, so avoid multiple loading and unloading they simply keep them outside their small shops.

The entire street were buzzing with loading and unloading. But the helper who were busy were quite and doing their jobs with ease. They know what are the things expected from them. They were unloading the farmers vehicle and putting them on the weighing machine. The market rate of the sugercane is only Rs.800 for a 1000 kg

While wandering the street in the morning. I felt like the morning hours belongs to these farmer and the agencies. There is hardly any other rush. Everyone is busy making the deal. The farmers were happy to get the best deal, while the agencies were happy to crack some mlre discounts. While labourers were happy to get their wages early in the day. It was chatting atmosphere. There were sugercane everywhere. One can get some for free start chewing of their own.

It was not easy to click them as they were very busy. I didn't like distracting them so made them work of their own and clicking these shots. It was one of a kind of new experince for me. Seeing the farmers getting their hard earned dues on time. Not sure if the rates will make them ever happy. But seeing all the hard work and further the juice seller getting few bunches for their stall, it felt good. It was a kind of food cycle that starts from farming fi3lds and ends up on juice seller. At least these juice seller helps to keep our sweet juicy thirst away with their pressing machine.
In good faith - Peace!!

It definitely looks like hard labor! I don't think I have ever had sugar cane juice before. Most of the sugar where I live comes from beets. We have a big plant near where I live that processes them.

Haven't had sugar cane juice for a while.
It's so interesting to learn about the entire food cycle—from the farmers arriving to the agencies selling the bulk to the small juice stalls. Thanks for shining a light on this complex, busy process that brings us that sweet juice!
I loved sugar cane so much when I was younger that I always look forward to following my mum to market on Saturdays so that she can buy some for me 😂
