The Road of the 52 Tunnels of Pasubio - Excursion through the memories of the First World War, with videos. [ENG] / La Strada delle 52 Gallerie del Pasubio - Escursione tra le memorie della Prima Guerra Mondiale, con video. [ITA]

Dear friends of Hive, as many of you know I come from Veneto, more precisely from the foothills, on the border with Trentino, a region of Italy that a century ago fully experienced a dark period in its history and in the whole country. I'm obviously talking about the period in which the First World War was fought.

Just leave the house and walk a few kilometers into the woods to find trenches and holes left by the explosions of the bombings. Almost everywhere in the pre-Alpine area that surrounds me, you can still breathe and you can perceive what happened, something that shook these lands, but they knew how to resist and fight to the end.

In this area there are some mountains considered sacred, because their soil has seen the blood flow of thousands of soldiers, men, who fought on the Italian front. These mountains are Monte Pasubio, Monte Grappa, Monte Cengio and Monte Ortigara.

Camps and searches for war relics are not permitted in these places, but they can be visited completely, in order to be able to closely observe the trenches and tunnels where war has shown its bloodiest face.

Today I want to take you with me to one of the most spectacular and incredible places I have visited, considering it one of the most significant places that my territory can offer by combining history and nature. I'm talking about the 52 galleries of Monte Pasubio.

Better known as Strada delle 52 Gallerie, it is a mule track that was built by the Italian soldiers during the First World War on Monte Pasubio. The road is 6555 meters long, including 2335 of which make up the 52 galleries, with a difference in height of about 750 metres. Starting from Bocchetta Campiglia at an altitude of 1216 m to reach the Porte del Pasubio at an altitude of 1934 m where the Achille Papa refuge is also located.

They were built in a very short time, starting from 6 February 1917 and concluding the works in November 1917. An engineering masterpiece, if we think of the instrumental possibilities of the time and the conditions of working along overhanging ridges.

The road was built to bring food and weapons with mules to the soldiers fighting on the front, at the top of the mountain. The road was strategically sheltered from the Austro-Hungarian bombardments that were on the opposite sides of the mountains.

I traveled this splendid road in June 2019, with my friend Luca (Cin, nickname by which I also call him in the videos). We set off early in the morning so we could be at the top by lunchtime, the walk takes about 3 hours to go up and another 3 to go down via the Heroes' Route. Yes, because for safety reasons the tunnels can only be traveled uphill and exclusively on foot, possibly equipped with electric torches, because in some tunnels even 200 meters long it is completely dark.

(I uploaded some videos of when Luca and I walked through the tunnels, sorry for some bad words and for the speech, but we were talking in Veneto dialect and I know you can't understand much).

However, in the videos you will be able to get a clear idea of what it is like to go down that road, walking in dark and steep tunnels, with several settled rocks. In fact, when walking along them you have to be very careful, both where you put your feet, better equipped with good boots, and the rocks that emerge in the tunnels and those that fall on the external road that runs along the massif.

In this short video you can see how the road is collapsed and unsafe, while in the photos, you can see that large boulder that has detached from the rocks above. furthermore they can only be visited from May/June to October, except for snowfall, otherwise they are unusable and it is forbidden to cross the route. You have to travel them with great care and respect for the place where you are, because the panorama, the view and the emotion that you experience along that road are truly special, you perceive the place and what it was.

Of all the 52 tunnels, number 19 certainly stands out, the longest, over 300 meters which is knotted in a spiral for 4 hairpin bends, truly unique and spectacular. You can see part of it in this video.

A path I believe unique in its kind, in fact it attracts visitors from all over the world. When I walked them, I met people from France and others from Portugal. But I repeat that they must be faced with attention and respect for the mountains, they are dangerous if taken lightly, in fact, episodes in which people who travel along them lose their lives are not uncommon, this year too two young people unfortunately fell from the ridges along the road of the 52 tunnels of Monte Pasubio. We must love and fear the mountains, in the sense that they must always be approached with the utmost prudence, prepared and aware of the dangers and attentions to be taken into consideration. However, in all the most inaccessible parts of the path, along the rocky walls there is a steel rope that allows you to hold on firmly if you are afraid of slipping.

To make the road even more particular is the extremely variable weather, you can find yourself before a tunnel under the hot sun, to exit the next one immersed in a blanket of freezing fog, as you can see in the next video.

But despite everything, I think it is one of the places that left me speechless the most, amazed by the panoramas that opened up to me as I exited each gallery, one show after another and the thought of a work of great mastery, what which today is a bit lost. During the excursion you can also meet animals such as chamois, snakes or this splendid slow worm that I was lucky enough to meet for the first time, as well as splendid and rare flowers such as the Edelweiss or this Gentiana Verna that I photographed.

Although I have inserted many images, I would have liked to show you even more, but unfortunately I broke the phone with the images and videos I took, luckily I had sent some to Luca before losing them and I had also taken photos and videos with my Sony A6000, but most were on the phone.

I would like to retrace this exceptional excursion, but @ giovi86 despite loving the mountains and nature so much, suffers from heights and doesn't feel like facing them for now. I'm will going with some friends or if some of you who are passionate about the mountains, seeing this post and the beauty of this itinerary, would like to travel them, I'd be happy to accompany them, it would be nice.

Cari amici di Hive, come molti di voi sanno provengo dal Veneto, più precisamente dalla zona pedemontana, ai confini con Il Trentino, una regione dell'Italia che un secolo fa ha vissuto a pieno un periodo nero della sua storia e del paese intero. Parlo ovviamente del periodo in cui si è combattuta la Prima Guerra Mondiale.

Basta uscire di casa e camminare qualche chilometro inoltrandosi nei boschi, per trovare trincee e buche lasciate dalle esplosioni dei bombardamenti. Quasi ovunque nella zona prealpina che mi circonda, si respira ancora e si può percepire ciò che è stato, qualcosa che ha sconvolto queste terre, ma hanno saputo resistere e combattere fino allo stremo.

In questa zona vi sono alcune montagne considerate sacre, perché il loro suolo ha visto scorrere il sangue di migliaia di soldati, uomini, che lottavano sul fronte Italiano. Queste montane sono il Monte Pasubio, il Monte Grappa, il Monte Cengio e il Monte Ortigara.

In questi luoghi non sono permessi accampamenti e ricerche di reperti di guerra, ma si possono visitare completamente, per poter osservare da vicino le zone di trincea e gallerie dove la guerra ha mostrato il suo volto più cruento e sanguinario.

Oggi voglio portarvi insieme a me in uno dei luoghi più spettacolari e incredibili che ho visitato, considerandolo uno dei posti più significativi che può offrire il mio territorio unendo storia e natura. Sto parlando delle 52 Gallerie del Monte Pasubio.

Meglio conosciuta come Strada delle 52 Gallerie, si tratta di una mulattiera che costruirono i militari Italiani durante la prima guerra mondiale sul Monte Pasubio. La strada lunga 6555 metri, tra i quali sono ben 2335 quelli che costituiscono le 52 Gallerie, con un dislivello di circa 750 metri. Partendo da Bocchetta Campiglia a quota 1216 m per arrivare fino alle Porte del Pasubio a quota 1934 m dove si trova anche il rifugio Achille Papa.

Furono realizzate in brevissimo tempo, partendo dal 6 febbraio del 1917 concludendo i lavori nel novembre 1917. Un capolavoro ingegneristico, se pensiamo alle possibilità strumentali dell'epoca e le condizioni di lavorare lungo costoni a strapiombo.

La strada fu costruita per portare con i muli le risorse di cibo e armamenti ai soldati che combattevano sul fronte, nelle sommità della montagna. La strada era strategicamente al riparo dai bombardamenti Austro-Ungarici che si trovavano sui versanti opposti.

Ho percorso questa splendida strada nel giugno del 2019, con il mio amico Luca(Cin, soprannome con cui lo chiamo anche nei video). Siamo partiti presto, di prima mattina in modo da poter essere in quota all'ora di pranzo, la camminata dura circa 3 ore per salire e altre 3 per scendere attraverso la Strada degli Eroi. Si, perché le gallerie per questioni di sicurezza sono percorribili solo nel senso di salita ed esclusivamente a piedi, possibilmente muniti di torce elettriche, perché in alcune gallerie lunghe anche 200 metri si è completamente all'oscurità.

(Ho caricato alcuni video di quando io e Luca abbiamo percorso le gallerie, scusate qualche parolaccia e per la comprensione del parlato, ma stavamo parlando in dialetto Veneto e comprendo non si capisca molto).

Tutta via nei video potrete farvi un'idea chiara di come sia percorrere quella strada, camminando in cuniculi bui e ripidi, con diverse rocce assestate. Infatti, nel percorrerle bisogna stare molto attenti, sia a dove si mettono i piedi, meglio muniti di buoni scarponi, sia alle rocche che spuntano nelle gallerie e a quelle che cadono sulla strada esterna che costeggia il massiccio.

Su questo breve video potete vedere come la strada è franata e poco sicura, mentre nelle foto, potete vedere quel grande masso che si è staccato dalle rocce soprastanti. inoltre si possono visitare solo da maggio/giugno ad ottobre, salvo nevicate, altrimenti sono inagibili ed è vietato attraversare il percorso. Bisogna percorrerle con molta attenzione e rispetto per il luogo in cui ci si trova, perché il panorama, la vista e l'emozione che si vivono percorrendo quella strada sono davvero speciali, si percepisce il luogo e quello che è stato.

Tra tutte le 52 Gallerie spicca sicuramente la numero 19, la più lunga, oltre 300 metri che si annoda a spirale per 4 tornanti, veramente unica e spettacolare. Potete osservarne una parte in questo video.

Un percorso credo unico nel suo genere, infatti richiama visitatori da ogni luogo del mondo. Quando le percorsi io, ho incontrato delle persone dalla Francia e altre dal Portogallo. Ma ribadisco che vanno affrontate con attenzione e rispetto per la montagna, sono pericolose se prese alla leggera, infatti non sono rari gli episodi in cui persone che le percorrono perdono la vita, anche quest'anno due giovani purtroppo sono caduti dai costoni lungo la Strada delle 52 Gallerie del Monte Pasubio. Bisogna amare e temere la montagna, nel senso che va sempre affrontata con la massima prudenza, preparati e consapevoli dei pericoli e delle attenzioni da tenere in considerazione. Tuttavia in tutte le parti più impervie del cammino, lungo le pareti rocciose c'è una corda d'acciaio che permette di tenersi saldamente aggrappati se si teme di scivolare.

A rendere la strada ancora più particolare è il meteo estremamente variabile, vi potrete trovare prima di una galleria sotto il sole caldo, per uscire alla successiva immersi in una coltre di gelida nebbia, come potete vedere nel prossimo video.

Ma nonostante tutto, credo sia uno dei luoghi che più mi hanno lasciato senza parole, stupito dai panorami che mi si aprivano all'uscita di ogni galleria, uno spettacolo dopo l'altro e il pensiero per un'opera di una grandissima maestria, cosa che oggi si è un po' persa. Durante l'escussione si possono inoltre incontrare animali come Camosci, serpenti o questo splendido orbettino che ho avuto fortuna e modo di incontrare per la prima volta, nonché fiori splendidi e rari come la Stella Alpina o questa Gentiana Verna che ho fotografato.

Sebbene ho inserito molte immagini, avrei voluto farvi vedere ancora di più, ma purtroppo ruppi il telefono con le immagini e i video che feci, fortuna che prima di perderle ne avevo mandate alcune a Luca e inoltre avevo fatto foto e video anche con la mia Sony A6000, ma la maggior parte erano sul telefono.

Vorrei ripercorrere questa escursione eccezionale, ma @giovi86 nonostante ami tanto la montagna e la natura, soffre le altezze e non se la sente di affrontarle per ora. In caso andrò con qualche amico o se qualcuno di voi appassionato di montagna, vedendo questo post e la bellezza di questo itinerario volesse percorrerle, sarei felice di accompagnarlo, sarebbe bello.
